    3. Diane Caldwell asked me to share this information with you about their work on the Old Mill/ Soldier's Cemetery in Thomaston. You'll recall that she has been working on this and has shared with us some of the items she has uncovered. Please pass this along to anyone you know who might be interested in this and if anyone has family buried there or knows about the cemetery itself, Diane would love to hear from you. power2000@gnat.net Dear List Members I am writing to everyone about fund-raising efforts to restore and maintain the Old Mill Cemetery in Upson County. The task of restoring this century-old cemetery will not be easy, nor will it be quick. In the past, funds were sought from local governments, which sponsored sporadic cleanups but offered no long-term solutions. The Soldier's Cemetery/Old Mill Cemetery, founded in 1867 and 1897. Part of this cemetery was for the Confederate State Soldier's, and another part was for the African-American people of Thomaston. What is known by many to be the Old Mill Cemetery is the resting place of many wonderful people that continue to touch many lives a century later. Hidden behind thick brush, vines and trash, poison ivy and thorns is a wealth of history that seems forgotten. Only one tall monument peeks above the tangle. This is the last resting place of Mollie Walker, and she seems to be saying "I will not be forgotten." Every one of those graves has a story to tell, and its up to us to listen. The names on the tombstones are a record of the community, and reminds us all where we came from. We owe a debt to the people buried there, and we must honor those who helped us succeed in spite of any obstacle that may come our way, for we owe a debt to the dead. In an effort to restore beauty and respect to this century-old cemetery, and many others in Upson County, I am conduction a fund raiser....This is where you can help. As you know, we rely heavily on the good will and continued contributions of good friends like yourself. I would appreciate any help that you can provide big or small Sincerely, Diane Caldwell 1602 US-Hwy 80 Culloden, Georgia 31016 To make a donation through PayPal please visit http://www.paypal.com Make payment to: power2000@gnat.net
