    1. [GAUPSON-L] Re: African American Geneology, DURRAH family
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Cary, Guilford, Speer, Lowe, Beall, Drake, Flewellen Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Dd.2ADI/979.1 Message Board Post: For 1866 onward, check Upson County Tax digests. The Thomaston-Upson Archives has a complete run of them from 1866 onward. Nineteenth century Georgia tax digests are divided into two parts, White and Colored. The arrangement is by militia district, then alphabetically by initial of surname. Colored tax digests list name of tax payer, AND name of his employer! Check records of homestead exemptions for the same period. They usually list husband and wife's name, sometimes children's names. Check marriage records. Spelling variations: Durrah, Dorough. When you get back to the slavery period, email me at [email protected] I may be able to help. David
