(Southern Historical Association.) William Stephens was reared as a farmer, attended schools and taught in the log houses of those times; he remained in Jasper County and worked on the farm until 1825, when the family moved to Upson County. There he bought a farm and settled. In 1836 William participated in the Creek Indian War. In 1869, he went into the merchandise business at The Rock, Georgia, which he continued until 1881, when he sold out and confined himself to his farming interest until his death.

Matilda was one of the children of Green Henry Martin and Mississippi Irene Gunn. Green Martin appears in the 1850 and 1860 censuses in Talbot County, Georgia. There is an Elizabeth Martin? in Green Martin's household in 1850. Her age appears to be 84 which makes her too old to be Mississippi's mother, whose name was also Elizabeth. I assume, but have no proof, that she was Green's mother. Have found no information as to who his father was. Green and Mississippi had the following children: Oliver 1838 Penelope 1840 not on 1860 census, don't know whether she died or got married Matilda 1841 Mary 1844 Eliza 1846 George 1848 Parmelia 1852 Iverson 1855 Green married Mississippi's younger sister Georgia Ann J. Gunn in 1862 after Mississippi died. They apparently had a son John A. Martin. That's about all I know about the Martins in that area. I would love to know more about Green's parents. Mike Day

The May 2004 newsletter from The Upson Historical Society is out. I do hope many of you on this list are members of the Society and already receive this. Hartford Pryor's column was about going barefoot and stumped toes. Just reading those words brought back some pain to my foot!! He also mentioned "kernels" which I confess, I really didn't know about, but it sounded like an infection from some sore on your body got into your lymph nodes. The "current" remedy of the day was soot -- putting a cross X on it. Back page contained some photos of "old Waymanville Mill" ruins...and an old still bridge. There is the continued work by Melvin Bentley, and this one was about the old covered bridge at DelRay (also a photo of a painting)...and other items about Delray from his interviews (done in the 50's. Penny Cliff's column mentions all the new and exciting things in the Archives.... all of it shows what a valuable research place it is. Be sure to plan to visit it soon. Virginia

They had a son named John D. Stewart who was born Oct. 1836 in Screven County, GA. John D. married Joanna Pryor, daughter of William Pryor of Screven County, in Screven County in Jan 1864. John D. and Joanna had at least five children, including a son named John (born c1868). Joanna Pryor Stewart was mentioned in her father's will in 1897, but died before 1900. John D. Stewart remarried about 1900 to Addeline LNU. I have not yet determined who their son John married. John's two younger brothers (Edward and Joseph) married in 1899 and 1897. John D. and Joanna Stewart had a grandson Albert H. Stewart who was born 19 Jul 1892 in Pierce Co, GA; but I don't know if he was the son of their son Willie Gordon or their son John.

I'm trying to find information on a Jacob Jordan. I found him listed on the 1840 census for Upson Co. I have an ancestor by the name of Lovick Pierce Jordan, born 1807 in S.C. Some seem to think that his father was a Jacob Jordan. I do know that my Lovick P., was in Jones Co, Ga., in the 1830's, and there was also a Jacob Jordan there. My Lovick P. Jordan, was in Pike Co. Ga., at least by 1850, and Pike and Upson adjoin each other, so I'm wondering, if there is some kind of connection. Any and all info would be greatly appreciated! Thank you, Becky Carden
