I am so very sorry to pass along this news about the sudden death of our good friend, Bobby C. Smith. He was such a regular contributor to our Upson List.... I remember so many messages where he would respond to someone's query, "That was my great aunt...what do you need?"... or something similar. Always ending with asking how he could help. Whenever I had a question about Upson County, I knew that Bobby C. would know the answer. I have asked a dear friend of his to help me create a memorial page for him, as he certainly is one of the outstanding genealogists for Upson County, and we will sorely miss him. Our Upson Researcher, Bobby C. Smith, 73, died Sunday, February 17, 2002. Visitation at Pasley-Fletcher Funeral Home, Thomaston, Ga., Monday night from 7 - 9 P.M. Funeral Tuesday at 2:00 o'clock at the First Baptist Church. Burial at Glennwood Cemetery. Virginia Crilley

They are buried in the Mary Henderson Cem. in Ashburn Ga. Eldora's parents as you know are William Lumpkin Hickman and Emily Floyd Ellis. Here is a sketchy list of their children (and besides Eldora): Thomas Jefferson, G---?., Nannie Belle (Nancy Ann), William Greene, and Nettie B. (Antionette). William Auborn Boles and Eldora had 3 children that died in infancy and then Thomas Jefferson Boles and Lester Boles. I just got in touch with these related cousins but they are only beginning genealogy. I've asked for copies from the Hickman Bible, and if I do get them I will post more. Do you know anything about my Boles--also in Upson Co/Turner Co/same time frame--by chance? Hopefully helpful, Sharon Marzonie (Boles)
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/upson.htm Patti, thank you so much for your guardianship bond. I've just posted it. Since it includes the listing of an orphan as well as the guardian, I'm sure this will be helpful to many people who do not have access to LDS films... Virginia

They were in Upson County does anyone have information on them?

Surnames: WILLIS/ALLEN/MCMURRY Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Dd.2ADI/57.59.646 Message Board Post: Do you know of any relation to the McMURRY or ALLEN surname?. Milton and Robinson also appear among that generation of my relatives. In LDS Film #282909, 1844 Upson Co., Ga. I find a guardian bond in the first item of the mircrofilm. The minor child is Matthew Allen son of John Allen (Matthew is my great grandpa's brother). He would have been about 16 yrs of age at the time. The guardian is Joel S. WILLIS as principal with William "J?" WILLIS and Anderton STAFFORD. I am sure that my gggrandmother Eleonor "Nellie" McMurry (ay,ey) married John Allen in Putnam Co., Ga. in 1811. She was born in North Carolina. Children also say her husband John was born in North Carolina in the 1880 census. After John died of a wound with a draw knife in 1838 in Pike Co., Ga., Eleonor married a Hosea Willis in Upson Co. about 1843. Tax records for Upson put Hosea Willis in Thomaston in 1850 and 1856, one year Anon acts as his agent to pay the tax. Eleonor in the 1850 census is in the household with my ggrandpa and his brother and their wives in next door Monroe Co. nearby Upson Co. I couldn't find Hosea in 1850. He may have bave been visiting his children by his 1st wife? In 1858, Eleonor goes with 2 daughters and their husbands to east central Alabama (one settled in then Talladega now Clay Co.). By 1860, one of the daughters and Eleonor join Eleonor's 3 sons in south Texas. In 1858, the 3 sons had struck out to Texas with their wives and brother-in-law John M. Woolsey to settle on the border of Lavaca and Colorado counties. You mention Joel S.Willis had a 1st wife Amy-any idea of the surname? I wondered if that was the connection. Do you have any dates for Hosea's death? I found an entry in the Ancestral File stating he died in 1858 in Jones Co. I understand the Ancestral File is about 40& wrong since no one checks the data. This looks like an extraction of a Bible record. Have you seen it? The 1858 date of course fits perfectly with my family leaving the area for Alabama and Texas. Thank you for any info you can share! You mentioned Yatesville. Tax records show possibly my ggrandpa, John L. Allen and another brother, Alexander in a tax district in that area with several Robinsons. Matthew sold land to a John Virden in the area right before leaving to Texas also.
Bettie Wood has undertaken a new on-line project....for Family Group Sheets http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/bios/groupindx.html Please visit it.....and then put together your group sheets to put on-line. She has a form to use : Click on Blank Group Sheet Form OR if you have a program which does this already you can just mail it to her... [email protected] this is just beginning....so we need everyone to help with it. As with all the files in the GAGenWeb Archives, the Search Engine enables someone to find your material from whatever county they happen to be searching. I see people posting their family line on mailing lists all the time....and this new project will be a more permanent, and easier to find, place for them. As always....listing your documentation is very important to future researchers. It will be an added plus for you....as you can just refer people to the URL when they write you asking questions about your family line!! If you have specific questions, Bettie will be delighted to work with you. [email protected] Virginia Crilley
I have noted the discussion about the Pasley family of Upson County with interest. James Crocker Paslay came from Laurens County, SC, and was the sister of my ggg grandmother, Martha Paslay Mitchell. The family home of Capt. Robert Paslay and Elizabeth Crocker, built in the 1790's, still stands in Laurens County. Robert and Elizabeth are buried on the property. I was fortunate enough to visit the area in June 2000 and met a descendant of the family who showed me around. I don't know if James Crocker Paslay changed the spelling of his name when he moved to Upson County, but the name was definitely spelled "Paslay" in Laurens County and pronounced "pass-ly," according to the cousin whom I met. Both Robert Paslay and Elizabeth Crocker Paslay had wills that are interesting, and there is quite a bit of information about the family in Laurens. I would be glad to share what I learned with interested descendants.
