    1. [GAUPSON-L] Appreciation for help given
    2. Crilley
    3. We've all been helped by so many people on the Internet. I think this is a great idea to show our appreciation!! 2a. VOLUNTEER APPRECIATION MONTH. RootsWeb was founded with the help of many selfless and dedicated individuals. These people, and many others, volunteer their time and talents to the pursuit of genealogical research. In a continuing effort to express our appreciation to the intricate network of RootsWeb volunteers, we are declaring April the official RootsWeb Volunteer Appreciation Month. Each week, we will be spotlighting various volunteers who have shown amazing devotion in helping others trace their genealogy. Keep an eye on our home page to read their stories. We will also give users the chance to show their appreciation for the help they have received. There is now a Message Board created for the sole purpose of expressing appreciation toward volunteers as well as sharing stories of success made possible only through the help of another genealogist. Please join us in saluting our volunteers. This is your chance to thank them and give them the recognition they deserve. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Chambley's;Proctors; Harrells; Mccards; Griggers; Waldrop Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Dd.2ADI/983 Message Board Post: I'm looking for persons with ties to the following families: Upson County Chamblees 1. John Chamblee (don’t worry about the spelling. Sometimes he spelled it with “ee” sometimes with “ey”) was born in NC around 1805-1815. He moved to Upson County GA before 1845 where on October 9th he married Elizabeth Proctor (b. approx. 1820-1825). His birth year is difficult to determine because on the 1860 Upson census he indicated he was 50 and on the 1880 census he indicated he was 74. John was a farmer and he raised his family in the Blackankle District of Upson County, which is south of Thomason along the Flint River. I have been told that hunting clubs currently use the area. John and Elizabeth produced several children. They were Joseph T. (b. 1848), John Benjamin (b. 8/241849 d. 4/24/1906), William T. (b. 1851), James M. (b. 1853), George W. (b. 1855), Franklin Marion (b. 1856), C.R. (b. 1859) and Martha J. (b. 1862). I have found no death records for John and Elizabeth and at this point, I wonder if they! left Upson late in life to live with one of their children. 2. Joseph Chamblee’s family was counted as part of the 1900 census in Upson. I have his wife and children’s names from the census along with their birth years. 3. I know that Ben stayed in Upson County and married Mary “Molly” Griggers. I found church minutes that indicate Ben and Mollie attended Kings Chapel Baptist church in Upson. I have information on his children and in two cases, his grandchildren and great grandchildren. 4. William married Annabelle Mccard and I know his children’s names along with some of their family information. 5. I have a census indicating family information for James, his wife Ala E. and their children . 6. I am hoping I’ve found a lead on George W. He was still living in the house with his parents at age 24 for the 1880 Upson census but I am looking for evidence to prove that he moved to Chambers county Alabama, married Margaret Kent and had his 1st of 7 children in 1884. 7. I have no info on C.R. and never saw him listed in a census after 1860 when he was 1 year old. It is very possible he did not survive. 8. Martha J. was born in 1862 and in 1880 she is living in her parents home with a son Oscar. The census lists her last name, as Mccaked but I have determined is was Mccard. It also says she was a widow but she was not. Her husband was John R, Mccard who was the brother of William’s wife. They were married 6/2/1878. John did not die until 4/1/1942. His obituary lists two sons and two daughters. It does not mention a wife or Oscar. I am sure it is the same John R. since it does list a sister Bell Chambley. I’m not sure whether John and Martha ever resumed their marriage. 9. Franklin Marion was my Great grandfather. He married Martha (Mattie Harrell) in Upson on October 18, 1877. In 1880, three years after Franklin and Mattie were married they were living with Ira Clary (from census) in Upson .My grandfather’s death certificate indicates he was born in Alabama so by 1881 they had left Upson County. Mattie and Frank (he rarely used Franklin) had several children. They were Georgia, William Bluford, Lizzie, Suzie, Samuel Jack, Frank James and Herbert. 10. Georgia was born in 1879 in Upson. She married William Franklin Thompson from Garard, AL and I believe they lived in Columbus, GA. I have his death date as 3/1/1946 but do not know Georgia’s death date. 11. I have found no information on Lizzie. 12. Susie married Varnell Slaughter and lived in Brooks GA. She was still alive in 1952 when Varnell died. His obituary says he was a farmer. They had one son, Roy Varnell Slaughter. 13. Samuel Jack was born 9/29/1892. His tombstone says he served as a Sargent for a field artillery unit in World War 1. His wife’s name was Florence and I found her name in my moms address book listed several times. My sister remembers my mom and her exchanging Christmas cards every year after Jack died. The last listing was in LaGrange GA. As of January 2001 the double marker at Whitewater Baptist Cemetery in Fayette County, GA did not have a death date for Florence. 14. Frank James (b. 2/26/1896 d. 11/? /1963) was born in Columbus and returned to Thomaston to work at Thomaston Mills. He married Mamie Pearl Waldrop (b.9/17/1896 d. 8/? /1969). . Frank worked in a cotton mill and played semi- pro baseball. They had two children, Gladys Louise (b. 1/29/1917 d. 1/26/1998 and Ralph who was killed in WW2. He was a Fireman 1st Class in the US Navy. I want to check his death date against known battles to learn more about how he might have died. 15. Herbert married a lady named Annie Bell and died in Columbus in 1969. There might be a daughter named Glorine 16. My grandfather, William Bluford ( b. 8/3/1879 d.7/9/1952) married Willie Annie Carroll (b. 8/30/1891 d.12/1979). He worked in textile mills as a foreman. William and Annie had 4 children; Mattie Lucille ( b. 10/13/1913 d. 1/8/2000), William Bluford Jr. (b.8/2/1916 d. 2/3/1991), George Barney (b.2/15/1919 d. 1/8/1991), Allie Elizabeth (died last year). They also adopted a son Roy (b.4/14/1908 d.7/16/1985). My Aunt Allie said that Mattie ran a boarding house and William and Annie adopted Roy from a lady that was dying and that stayed at the boarding house 17. William Bluford Jr. was my father. He married my mom, Agnes Virginia Hanners (b. 5/22/1917 d. 6/26/1988) on 1/13/1936 at the Columbus courthouse. They had five children. Four of these are alive today.
