    3. Lisa keeps working on typing up her notes from her visit to the Trice Cemetery --- and here's the answer to my question about WHY it is called Trice. (**Lisa is doing such a great job!! And if you have ever tried to transcribe a cemetery, you know how much work it is. Not only trying to juggle the notepad and pencil, but also typing your scribbly notes once you get home!) Now, we just need you Trice researchers to help us with some of the relationships. Since they appear to be all related to the original Trice family in some way....but we'd like to add this information right to the name. Please, if you have any family buried in Trice Cemetery, let me hear from you. The basic information will be typed....we would just need you to help us with who they belong to. Historical Marker Upson County, Georgia Trice Cemetery, the largest burial ground in Upson County, Georgia, was established by William and Jane Tamplin Trice whose house once stood 300 yards west of the Cemetery. William (1789-1858) and Jane (1794-1856), both buried here were among the earliest settlers of Upson County (created December 1824). They moved to Upson from Jones County, Georgia, circa 1823 when the area was still Pike County, formerly Monroe. The oldest marked grave, dated 1837, is that of their Daughter, Milly Ann Trice Nelson. In 1857, James Trice, oldest son of William and Jane, commissioned the building of the Rock wall surrounding the original Cemetery. For this purpose he rented a slave, a skilled rock mason, from another planter. The date is carved into the Southwest corner stone. In 1904 additional land was donated by John Reeves Roberts, son-in-law of Milly Ann Nelson, "... for the purpose of providing a burial ground for the relatives of James Trice and such others as may be allowed..." All those buried within these walls are either descendants of William and Jane Trice, members of their allied families, or slaves owned by the family. Marble markers now replace the field stones which once marked the graves of the slaves. Trice Cemetery is maintained by contributions to the Trice Cemetery Memorial Association. Driving Directions: Yatesville Hwy 74 East, turn on Trice Road, Cemetery is on corner of Trice Cemetery Road and Trice Road. Virginia Crilley

Newspaper Article- Thomaston Times DEATH of LITTLE GLADYS BLOUNT Little Gladys was burned on Thursday afternoon about 5:00 Feb. 18, 1915. She suffered about a day and died Friday afternoon. She was buried Saturday afternoon at 3:00. The funeral was conducted at the home of her parents, Mr. & Mrs. Thad Blount, by Rev. W.W. Childs and her body was carried to New Hope Cemetery and buried. It was very sad for us all to give her up, but God always knows best. Everybody loved her and she wore a smile on her face everytime you saw her. We all sympathize with the family. A Little Friend. 3. Does anyone know WHY this has this name? With so many families buried here, you'd think it must have once been a church or a community cemetery!!! Lisa Graham visited the Trice Cemetery yesterday and is working on getting it typed up. (this is only part of it ---- tremendous amount of work she's doing!!) We'd like to have your help in adding MORE information about these individuals.... Trice Cemetery in Upson County This is a record as of Sept. 07, 2002 by Lisa Graham. All of the Rows run North to South. The Rows are difficult to specify due to the adding of new graves. They do not actually line up in rows any longer. There are 2 parts to this Cemetery. The First part is surrounded by a 3 foot rock built wall and black iron gates. The newer division is fenced. 1. [GAUPSON-L] Callier obit
    2. Crilley
    3. I'm very excited to report that Penny Cliff (the very energetic Archivist/Director of Thomaston Archives) is working with Lisa Graham in providing some newspaper obits. Some of these were clipped out without the dates.....so if you can help us supply exact dates that would be wonderful.....and the burial location. In fact, if one of you would volunteer to work on this with us, that would free both Lisa and I up to concentrate on other work. Your job would be to use your common sense, resource books (i.e. cemetery book, Upson Co History, on-line data like census, tax lists, etc) to try to determine the answers about the exact date of death and burial. You might search on the Boards to see if someone is researching that particular surname. Would some kind soul who isn't able to get to Upson County, but has time and interest to solve some of these "mysteries".... write me. That way when the obits are posted we might be able to add some "NOTES" that would help the researcher out. I've always found that when I do something in depth like this, I really help my own research out by some discovery that I never guessed I'd find!! >From: [email protected] >Date: Sun, 8 Sep 2002 10:56:07 EDT > > >Thomaston Times >MR. 1. [GAUPSON-L] Coroner Reports
    2. Crilley
    3. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaupson/coroner.htm Someone contributed this wonderful page -- from the Thomaston Archives.... and I hoped that maybe someone else might be have looked at the FILE there and copied another page or two. We'd love to add to this one.... Also along the same line, a volunteer is working on the Death Indexes...and we now have them up through 1927. ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/upson/vitals/deaths/ Anything you can share and help us with, I'd love to put on-line. Sometimes people ask my why we don't have MORE on-line for Upson County.....when there is so much available in the Thomaston-Archives. I'm dependent on people transcribing the materials they find, and sending them to me. I put them on-line and that really helps those people who can't get to Thomaston themselves to research. Same thing with LDS films....if you rent films on Upson County, and can transcribe even a few pages, that will help us all. Virginia Crilley

    1. [GAUPSON-L] "Old" Hicks Farm/Place
    2. Does anyone know where the Hicks Farm was with family cemetery? My cousin said someone told her it was about 2 - 3 miles south of Thomaston on Hwy 19 if going north its off to the left of Hwy. 19. Do you know if a cemetery has been surveyed or found in that location? Would love to have a list of people buried there. I have not been to Thomaston, GA since I was about eight years old. So I have no clue where this could be. Thanks, June
