Question: Good Hope Primitive Baptist is in the lower section of the county where Z. Gordon lived, right? This obit says Yatesville.... so did the Good Hope Church move?? Estimated date: ? 1905? DEATH OF MRS. MARTHA A. PICKARD The death of Mrs. Martha A. Pickard a highly esteemed resident of Upson, occurred Tuesday morning at four o'clock at the home of Mr. Jonathan Stewart of Yatesville. Mrs. Pickard had been ill since Christmas day, when she was seized with a chill and was put to bed. Since that time she grew gradually weaker until death came. Pneumonia was thought to be the cause of her death. Mrs. Pickard was one of the oldest residents in the country, and was well known to all the old settlers of the county. For fifty years she was a member of the Good Hope Primitive Baptist Church near Yatesville. She was indeed an estimable Christian woman and her death is greatly regretted. Mrs. Pickard was seventy-six years old last April. The funeral services were conducted Wednesday morning at eleven o'clock by Elder W. W. Childs in the presence of a large concourse of friends and relatives. Mr. Charles E. Pickard of this city, and Mr. G.A. McKinley of Indian Territory are the only surviving children. Mr. Pickard left Thomaston Tuesday morning to attend the burial services. The Times extends deepsest sympathy to the bereaved friends and relatives. Virginia Crilley
Hope someone recognizes this person and knows where she is buried. Touching that it was obviously done by her grandson Willie. F.A. Cannafax preceded her in death. In Memory of Mrs. F.A. Cannafax On Jan 14, 1905, the cold messenger of death came and bore away on its dark wings our grandmother, yes we realize she will never more enter our home with that sweet smile and gentle tone to make sunshine again. But our hearts are comforted with the thought she is now at rest and we shall ere long, with her awake in wonderous beauty and loveliness amid our sorrow we are made to rejoice when we think of her eternal bliss, sharing with others the presence of her companion who precede her to glory a number of years ago. She was a consistent member of the primitive Baptist Church, having devoted herself to God in early years. a few days before the end came, she was made to rejoice in One in whom all happiness comes. Oh, how happy it would be to us all, if at the end of life, while walking through the dark Valley of Death, we could reach out our hand and be led by our Savior. Farewell, dear grandmother, sweet is thy rest for we know you are now a happy Angel singing praises around that beautiful throne. Virginia Crilley
no date...but probably around 1905? Can anyone help me with more info? Burial place is Collier ? Is this listed in the Cemetery Book? There was a family of Smiths.... one named Rebecca listed as early members in the Fellowship Primitive Baptist Church. Could be her? Mrs. Rebecca Smith, an aged and esteemed lady, died at the home of her son, Mr. James Smith about nine miles west of Thomaston on Friday. Mrs. Smith was visiting her son for a few days and while at his home received a fall, and owing to her advanced old age was unable to recover from the shock. She was seventy-eight years old, having been born and reared in Upson and having lived here her entire life. Mrs. Smith is survived by four children, two sons and two daughters. Her children living in this county are: Mr. James Smith and Mrs. James Beverly The remains were interred at the Collier burying place. Virginia Crilley
I just had a question about John Barker, one of the early pastors of Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church (served 1846) I've located the District and lot #....but Trime (Trinne or Triune) Mill Rd doesn't seem to run through it. That lot is directly south of Thomaston on Gordon Road. Did they move? Has anyone ever seen a picture of this old church... or know when it closed its doors or turned into another church? Primitive Baptist Churches Bethlehem (1824-1959) Take Trime Mill Rd 7.3 miles. Cemetery on right. Feb 6, 1824 established a meeting house on Lot #17, District #10, formerly Monroe County, then Pike County, on the west side of the [Tobler] creek. Thomas Leverett was chosen as first pastor followed by Jacob King in 1826. More information: (History of Upson County pg 327)including abstracts of early minutes and early member names. The Thomaston Archives sells a wonderful, very large map of Upson County made in 1897. I believe they are still selling them for $3 plus postage....but you'd need to double check that price, since I bought mine in 1998. This map shows the Land District with Land Lots, the GMD districts, and many schools and churches of the time period, and even some land owners. Since Lisa Graham is working so hard on getting some more Upson County cemeteries on-line by personally visiting them, and others are helping out with some identifications.... I thought you might be helped by my putting on-line portions of the land districts as we are working on these. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaupson/landmaps.htm You can click on the photo for an enlarged map. I only have ONE on-line, but hopefully will have more later today. Virginia Crilley
I am so grateful for you who have jumped in and helped solve some of the mysteries of the obits... to update you on little Magnolia Gray. The date of this tragic accident and newspaper clipping was probably sometime between 1900 and 1908. Mr. Barron was married to Sarah J. (Sallie) Fallin on April 8, 1894. The article says he was 35 years old. Sallie was born in 1873 and he might have been a little older but probably not younger. That's the rationale for my estimate of 1908. Sallie was the daughter of Richard Jackson Fallin of Upson County, who died sometime after 1900, so the accident couldn't have occurred before 1900. I have information on the Fallins but nothing on Charles Barron, other than his marriage to Sallie Fallin. Would appreciate any information that turns up. There is a John W. Andrews buried at "The Rock Cemetery" In Upson: John W. Andrews, b. 12/16/1850, d. 11/2/1905 From the Upson County Cemetery Book: The Rock Cemetery originated sometime around 1900. The north side of the plot of land that was originally the Upson Campground, organized for this purpose a number of years after Sherman's raid through Georgia in 1865, was reserved for the cemetery later. The cemetery was first used in 1923. The cemetery is located eight miles east of Thomaston, Ga., on Highway 36 at The Rock, Georgia. It is adjacent to The Rock United Methodist Church. No dates on this, but we're guessing 1910-1921? I'd love to add any facts to this obit, if you know any more. Thomaston Times AWFUL TRAGEDY The people of Thomaston were shocked Sunday morning on reading in the Atlanta papers of the terrible tragedy in which Mr. W. H. Johnston lost his life. He was well known in Thomaston were he at one time lived having married a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. R.F. Trice. The sympathy of Thomaston people goes out to those affected by the awful tragedy. The account of killing as it appeared in the Atlanta Constitution as follows; Because a deliver boy left his push cart on the side walk yesterday afternoon, W.H. Johnston, Mayor of Oakhurst is Dead, and P.W. Zuber, A former minister, is dying at the Grady Hospital. In the fatal Quarrel, occurred in front of the Mayor's house, Johnston's Skull was pierced like an eggshell by Zuber, who rained blows upon him with a heavy scantling, from which protruded a ten-penny nail. Zuber was shot through the left lung with a pistol in the hands of his opponent. Johnston's died almost immediately in the lap of his wife who ran out of the house and found him lying in the gutter. Clasped in wife's Arm's. Zuber, staggering down the street out of his mind through loss of blood , was clasp in the arms of his wife, who place him aboard a Decatur car and rushed him to the hospital, where doctors say he cannot live. The cause of the quarrel was pitifully trivial. The delivery boy, an employee of Zuber, who was a Grocer, failed to remove his cart from the sidewalk in front of the Mayor's house when requested to do so. Johnston, angered by what he considered the boys impudence, kicked the cart into the gutter overturning it and spilling the grocery's in the street. The boy telephoned the occurrence to his employer, who left his store to remonstrate with Johnston. When the two men met Hot words followed, which soon led to blows. Which one was the first aggressor will probably never be decided. Both men were thought Highly of in the community and has always been in the best of terms with each other. Johnson has been most energetic in the upbuilding of Oakhurst and has erected practically every home in the community. END...... Virginia Crilley
Lisa continues to type these obits... Thomaston Times In Loving Memory On Wednesday morning, Sept. 25, 1912 the Death Angel came to the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Sollenberger and claimed for it's victim little Annie, Age 10 years and 11 days. Her parents and loved one's were expecting his coming, but Oh ! it was so sudden. She was conscience up until her death. She turned from her loved one's standing over her and said " I am going to sleep" and alas she feel asleep in Jesus. Her charming face and loving disposition is missed, Yes greatly missed by her host of friends and relatives. But dearly as we all loved her we would not call her back to bear her sufferings as they were the last days of her life. But now we know she is at rest and we trust in God. "Who doth all things well" To lead us safely on to meet her in that sweet beyond. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. R.B.O. England. Her body was laid to rest at Antioch Cemetery tell Jesus comes. Weep not for me my parents Dear, I am not Dead, but sleeping here, As I am you soon must be, Prepare for Death and follow me. You have my heartfelt sympathy in this your sad hour of bereavement. May God's richest blessings rest upon you. Mable H. Virginia Crilley
Does it seem like I'm always begging for something?? One thing leads to another...and I seem to always have a question. I'm looking for a plat (early layout of lots) for early Thomaston....especially those lots around the square. Since we're working on the list of people who bought the early lots, having a map would help me pinpoint exactly where this lot was situated. Does anyone happen to have one? Or have you ever seen one? I'm sure there is one -- either at the Courthouse or the Thomaston Archives, but I was hoping someone on our list might also have it in their file. Thanks.. and I do so appreciate all those people who respond to me whenever I ask for help. Virginia Crilley
