    2. Crilley
    3. I think this is a fascinating story of how this Bethlehem church began. Does anyone know where the Church "Rocky Creek" was....probably Pike County? I'd love to hear from some Walker Family Researchers... as they were founding members of this church. Henry Hooten had been forming Baptist Churches in GA as far back as 1808.. so he had a great impact on all these western frontier counties. Source for this information: The Early History of Upson County pg 327 **This book is such an excellent history...1122 pages....indexed.... and has been reprinted if you are interested&& Bethlehem Primitive Baptist Church 3842 Triune Mill Rd. 706-467-6657 This is one of the earliest churches in Upson County. In fact it was formed before Upson County was created, when the land was in Pike County. February 6, 1824 We, a few scattering Baptists, in a wilderness country, feeling our lonesome situation, and as sheep without a shepherd, after having conferred together, agreed to have a Meeting House on Lot No 17 in District No 10, formerly Monroe County, now Pike County, Georgia, on the west side of the creek [Tobler Creek] February 15, 1824 We, the Baptist brethren met in a conference capacity, and agreed to send for ministerial aid to look into our standing, and if found Orthodox in the faith, to constitute us into a church. We agreed to send for Brother Henry Hooten, and to the church at Rocky Creek for ministerial aid, and appointed William Norman to write to Rocky Creek and to bear the letter. Jeptha Walker to write to Brother Hooten and bear the letter requesting them to attend us on Saturday before first Sunday next at the place designated. Virginia Crilley

    3. Just found a partial answer!! We have the historical marker on-line UNKNOWN CONFEDERATE DEAD Here lie 12 Confederate soldiers "known but to God" who died of disease and wounds 1864-1865 in the General Hospital, Georgia State Line, located near this spot. Dr. A.P. Brown was senior surgeon in charge of the hospital. Dr. E.A. Flewellen, a prominent surgeon, at one time Surgeon of the 5th GA Infantry Regiment and later Medical Director of the Confederate Army of TN, assisted at this hospital when on sick leave. Dr. Fllewellen's home still stands at The Rock. (Confederate Cemetery 1 mile south of The Rock) UNKNOWN CONFEDERATE DEAD From the Thomaston Courthouse, take HWY. 74 East, also known as Yatesville Hwy. Go 6.3 Miles & turn left on The Rock Road, then 2.4 Miles. This Cemetery sits beside the Road with a Memorial Marker and an American Flag. The Memorial Marker states " UNKNOWN CONFEDERATE DEAD" Here lies 12 Confederate Soldiers "known but to God," Who died of disease and wounds 1864-1865. Near the Road side is one Marked Tombstone PVT. Thomas J. Penn 1828- Sept. 1, 1864 On top of the hill stands 12 markers in a row of unknown of men who died for this Country. The American Flag is displayed on a pole as a reminder. He served as Clerk of Court for Oglethorpe County and was elected to the Georgia Legislature, HR 1830-1831. He also served in the Georgia State Senate 1832-1833. About 1835 he sold his holdings in Oglethorpe County and moved to Upson County, Georgia. He died in Upson County in 1848 and is buried in the Collier Cemetery near Thomaston, Georgia. A copy of the will of Isaac Collier was transcribed from Upson County records by his great-grandson, John A. Collier of Leland, Mississippi in July of 1929. Elizabeth Means Collier died in 1851. Isaac next married Elizabeth McMurray on March 7, 1840 in Upson County, Georgia. (Elizabeth Means is probably the "Smith" Connection. She was born July 7, 1888, age 25 years one month and three days, married November 14, 1897 to Will Stillwell. Only a few years were spent in companionship with her husband whom she loved so dearly. Three children born to them but died while young. They now are waiting to welcome hmother home where all is joy, peace and happicness forevermore. Weep not dear husband, mother, and sister but rather for ourselves who have got to die. Le us so live that we will be ready to meet her on the other shore, where death nor pain can enter. She was a member of the Primitive Baptist church and was a true and faithful member up to the time of her death. She told her loved ones death would be sweet to her. My sister's voice now is hushed Her warm true heart is still. Her hands are claps upon Her cold icy breast. Dear sister, we could not wish You back again but say, Sweet Daisy with God Remain until we meet again. Around her new made grave Loving hearts doth week and Call their dear and precious One who is deep in sleep. Her sister Emma Cook Virginia Crilley
