This Bessie Lee Starling was my aunt, although she died long before I was born. She died on May 20, 1916 shortly before her 22nd birthday. She was the daughter of John David Starling and Mary Hannah McDaniel Starling of Upson County. She had been sick for a week or ten days with fever and everything done possible for her but to no avail. The funeral and burial occurred Tuesday afternoon at Hendrix, the service being conducted by Rev. Bowden of McDonough, assisted by Rev. R.E. Rutland. The exercises were attended by a large number of sorrowing friends and relatives. Miss Starling was just entering into young womanhood being about twenty years of age. Hi, This question about Andrew Jackson Fletcher is interesting to me because a group of families moved from Upson Co. & Crawford Co., GA to Pike Co., AL around 1857.(The county seat of Pike Co., AL is Troy.) The surnames of the families who moved to Pike Co., AL included Carter, Dorough, Kendrick, Miller, Wilson. I knew there were probably others; now I can add the names Fletcher and Allen. If any one knows of other families who made that move, I'd be glad to know about them. If you know the reason for the move (cheap land???), I would also like to hear. Thanks. TRAVIS MOORE DEAD Travis Moore, a well known brick mason, was struck by the northbound Southern train as it passed the old Griffin Mill Saturday night and received injuries from which he died after being found shortly after the accident occurred. He was not run over or badly mangled, but knocked down the embankment. It is said that he was sitting on the cross-ties of the track with his hand, apparently asleep, when the train approached. He was knocked off the track and when found was in a dying condition. Moore was a young man and unmarried but leaves his parents and several brothers and sisters to mourn his tragic and untimely death. The remains were carried to his old home at Thomaston Monday where the funeral and interment was made. (Griffin Sun) ??Would this be Spalding County?? The remains were interred at Atwater Monday morning, Rev. James Barron conducting the funeral services. Virginia Crilley

Castlen, of Atlanta, and had been in declining health for some time. He was 32 years of age. He was born and reared in this community and was well known to many people of Thomaston. He was a member of the Methodist Church. The people of Thomaston extend sympathy to the bereaved family in their sad loss. Virginia Crilley
Let's see what our team can do to help out this person and make his trip to Thomaston more productive!! [email protected] I plan to visit Thomaston on Oct. 2-3 to try to find something on my great grandfather, Andrew Jackson Fletcher. I find him in the 1840 census when he was 8 years old, but living with a family with a different name. Had his parents died? Are there any records beyond the census? These are my questions. I know that things go better when I go to the court house and historical archives with someone who knows what she or he is doing and knows the history of the county. I am glad to pay a fee for a geneologist's time. Can you refer me to the right person? I know that AJF went over near Troy, AL and married a woman named Susanna Sessions when he was about 18 years old. I appreciate any help that you can give me. Virginia Crilley
This is a very sad one.... MRS. GRADY MEEKS A death of unusual sadness was that of the sudden death of MRs. Grady Meeks one day last week. So young, almost a bride, a devoted companion of her young husband, Grady. The mother of two sweet little children, one three months old, the other perhaps two years, she had prepared the early morning meal and her companion had gone to his daily work, she turned her steps to putting the house in order, when, it is supposed the dread monster summoned her, she lay down on the bed between her two sleeping infants and without a word of protest gave her young spirit back into the hands of her creator. The funeral services were conducted by the Rev. J.E. Barron and her remains were deposited in the well kept and well filled Shiloh Cemetery. The husband and other relatives have the sympathy of the entire community. In the gloaming, while walking among the tombs and reading their epitaphs, I noticed the names of many old worthies. I don't know WHAT county in Georgia this lady lived in! But it would be interesting to find out more about her. LADY WHO STARTED VETERANS' REUNION IS DEAD News has just been received of the death , April 14, of Mrs. Elizabeth Glover at her home, Chickasha, Okla. This will be learned with regret by thousands of friends in Georgia and over the South. Mrs. Glover had attained her 85th year. She spent the most of her long life in Georgia, but for some twenty years past had lived with her daughter, Mrs. A.C. Johnson at Corsicana, Texas. She was the widow of Col Thomas Glover, of the Thirty first Georgia regiment. It was at her suggestion that her husband's regiment gathered in an annual reunion and out of this grew the Confederate Veteran's Reunion. At the Richmond reunion she was accredited as the originator of the movement leading tho these happy historic gathering of the "boys in gray". Virginia Crilley

Hi, Can someone help me with the parents of Martha Ann Harp, who married Thomas Millen (Miller??) in Upson Co. 29 Jan. 1843? If this Martha Ann actually married Thomas Miller, she (b. abt. 1826 in GA) and Thomas Miller were in Crawford Co. GA in 1850 living very near the families of Martin L. Harp and Green P. Harp, both sons of Dixon Harp. I know there's a book on the Harp family, but I live in SC and don't have access to a copy. I'd appreciate any help, suggestions, clues. I'm happy to share information on Thomas Miller & family. Thanks. Pat Crabtree [email protected]

SUDDEN DEATH OF MR. M.W. DAVIS The death of Mr. M.W. Davis, a worthy citizen of Thomaston, on early Wednesday morning at his home on Railroad Street after only a short illness came as a great shock to the entire town. He was thought to be a man of splendid health and his untimely demise is greatly regretted. The physician left about midnight and the patient was resting very quietly, later on Mr. Davis was taken violently ill, physicians were summoned but before medical aid could arrive he was dead. The cause of Mr. Davis' death was congestion. Mr. Merritt Davis was a quiet, unassuming citizen, loyal and true to his friends and offended no one. DEATH OF FORMER CITIZEN [1907] Major Louis Hamburger, a veteran cotton manufacturer and prominent citizen of Columbus and a former resident of Upson died at his home in that city Friday after a lingering illness. Major Hamburger and his wife were former residents of this county, Mrs. Hamburger having been born and reared in this city. Mrs. Hamburger died last October and since her death, Mr. Hamburger had lost all interest in earthly things. Major Hamburger was born in the town of Durheim, in Bavaria, Germany, April 29, 1831 and was thus 76 years of age when he passed away from earthly scenes. He was a son of Henry and Henrietta (Loeb) Hamburger. He came to the United States in 1850 landing in New York and went to Barnesville, GA where for two years he was a clerk in a store. He then went to Wymanville GA and began keeping books for the Wymanville factory, which is located in Upson County eight miles from Thomaston on a tributary to the Flint River. In 1866 he came a partner in the enterprise, the firm of Swift, Hamburger being formed. At the time this was one of the best known cotton manufacturing plants in the entire state. He went to Columbus in 1886 and was first engaged in the cotton warehouse business. Later he became the heat of the Paragon Cotton Mills, which was later changed to Hamburger cotton mills. He was identified with all the public enterprises of Columbus and was a prominent stockholder in various industries of that city. He was a member of the Knights of Honor and of Royal Arcanum. He was not a member of any church, but attended the First Baptist Church, where his family were members. Dr. Ashby Jones, pastor of that church conducted the funeral services at the home on Sunday afternoon. The deceased is survived by two sons, Mr. Louis Hamburger, Jr. of Montgomery and Mr. George Hamburger of Columbus, and two daughters, mrs. W.T. Candler of Montgomery, and Mrs. John A. Mitchell of Columbus. Virginia Crilley
