In Upson County, in the 32nd year of her age, Mrs. Elizabeth E. Pichard, wife of John Pickard, and daughter of Joseph McKindley. She had been a member of the Baptist Church for a number of years until the close of her life, she had been for her uniform piety in the relations of daughter, wife, mother and mistress. Religion was the controlling element of all her movements. Hers was no fitful piety which today shines forth with the brillance of a meteor and tomorrow all is dark and forbidding to the beholder. ... Addressing her son, she said, "My son have you ever tired to pray. My loving husband, my dear Mother, you all must meet me in Heaven. I shall soon be in a better world than this. Bring my children that they may receive a mother's blessing. My husband, farewell, my children farewell, my sisters farewell, meet me in heaven, and with a shout of triump she passed from earth to join the Angel throng of Heaven. A Friend. Dean Mrs. N.C. Dean, who now makes her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ella Brown of Zebulon, is one of our oldest citizens of Pike county. Mrs. Dean was born in Upson county near Thomaston 86 years ago last December 30th, being the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Yates, originally of South Carolina. Mrs. Dean first attended school at The Rock and a short time at Delray to Prof. Bob Smith. At the age of eighteen she was married to William Thomas Dean. She became the mother of two daughters, Mrs. J. G. Willingham and Mrs. D. Brown, who are now living in Zebulon. Mrs. Dean's husband was a Confederate soldier in the war between the states. He was in Company d 13th Regiment Upson county Volunteers. He was killed by an accidental discharge of his own gun while crossing the Savannah river at Savannah, March 17, 1862. Leaving Mrs. Dean a widow with two small children She endured many a hardship and struggled hard to raise and provide for her children and herself. But says she feels that God was with her and helped her all the way through. Mrs. Dean joined the church in her early girlhood and is now a member of New Hope Baptist church where she has been a member since 1901 when she moved to Pike county. This gives the ages of Poor School Children in 1859-1860. (Poor Schools were those set up using "tax monies" -- probably the first public school in contrast to the private academies that were in existence at this time. Note also the large variance between those eligible and those who actually attended. (and only those who attended are listed, as the pay of the teacher was based on attendance) Many counties do still have these "Poor School Lists" -- (and we try to get them on-line) so be sure to check out the county you might be interested in.... the information varies, but in some cases you are able to find the names of children that may not be included in the 10 year census records. May Term - Upson county NOTE: Poor School lists are on-line for Upson County thanks to Joe Hungate. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/upson/history.html Panel No 1 Superior Court Upson County Educational tax collected:$1290.34 30% upon the State Tax Received from State: $1400; $40.75 paid by Tax Collector for year 1858; Aggregate total: $2748.66 $1588.86 paid to Teachers of Poor Children for the last year The number of children returned as being entitled to the benefit of the poor school fund for last years was 689 of whom only 310 went to school during said year. It is probable that a larger number of poor children will be returned this year than last because of their being taken now between the ages of six and eighteen, instead of eight and eighteen, as heretofore. No estimate can be made with certainty of the amount to be received from the State for the present year, but it is believed that it will be less than last year. Recommend that the county continue the Poor School System, and Request Inferior Court direct 20% instead of 30% [tax], as in preceding year. Virginia Crilley

Ellen Maude Stafford married James Edward Redding and lived in Barnesville, Ga. They had a child named Edward Benjamin Redding (my grandfather) and to whom this picture is referring. There was a clan of Staffords' from The Rock, Ga. but I am not able to prove that J. B. was from that clan. I have found one record: Upson county history, unknown year, Poor School record that lists J B Stafford with 2 children in the 588th district, (contributed for use in the USGenWeb by Joe Hungate). I would appreciate any information on McDaniel families in Upson County between 1835 and 1845. I am specifically trying to find John ,with wife Margaret or "Peggy" (Anderson). One son married Martha Murphy in Upson in 1843 and one son lists Upson County as place of birth in 1837, so family was in area during this time, but I have been able to find nothing except those two facts. To date, I can not find this family on any 1840 Census. Help! Nancy

There is a website that lists former and current place names for Georgia counties: http://www.cviog.uga.edu/Projects/gainfo/pncounty.htm There was a *Jugtown* in Pike County, but there is none listed for Upson. It might have been a community that was so close to the Pike/Upson county lines that it crossed over from one to another. Just an idea. If you can add more information about George -- where and when he died -- maybe you could even build a small bio on him that we could place on-line. George M. Lumpkin married Mary Jane Batton. Wm O Smith JP on Mar 5, 1848 (pg 239 The Early History of Upson Co ) http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/upson/census/1850/pt1.txt 1850 Census has him too. http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/upson/census/1880/18800002.txt He's also listed in the agricultural census http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/upson.htm Do some searches on this page...and you may discover some other things. Same thing with this page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaupson/index.htm http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaupson/gmd470.htm Shows a map of the Jug District ***Note don't confuse this with Jugtown where the pottery was made. JUGTOWN, where the pottery was made, was in the Flint District. (This should not be confused with the Jug District which was nearer to Yatesville.) This small community straddled the Upson, Pike and Lamar County lines, that technically don't exist any more. Bolling Brown operated an industry making jugs from the local clay which was especially good for pottery. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaupson/probate.htm This page tells you about the records in the Courthouse.... Be sure to stay in touch and share what else you find out about this family..... At 08:27 AM 10/16/2003 -0700, Marilyn M Heiderer wrote: >I'm searching for information on GEORGE M. I stumbled on your posting (almost 3 years old now) and wondered if you found that connection you were looking for. I'm just getting started on the Goins clan, my husband's family (selfish ol' me began researching my side first--there was much more to go on there!). I'm trying also to link the Drury name since my father's grandfather's name was Claybon Drewry Goins. My father-in-law doesn't know his grandparents first names, only that she was nee a Smith; they died before he was born I think. Mr. & Mrs. Unnamed Goins had 9 children which they raised in Columbus, Muscogee Co., GA. William D. was the oldest (b. abt. 1890), followed by 3 or 4 of the girls (Nora (1895, m. George Knight), Catherine, Sally, ?, & ?) Preston D. Goins was b. 1900, and the last 2 were Claybon (1906) and Eural D. (1909). I came accross in the 1880 census for Lee Co., Alabama, a Martha Goins, age 50, widowed, from GA, and among her children was a 17 year old Drury, who could have been the father of the nine above. I have a tendency to think the Drury name may be a generation further back since it's misspelled in Claybon's name, of course that could have been a paperwork error also. Ii wish I could be of some help to your research, but right now I'm struggling to get 3 generations back! If you have come accross anything you feel may help me. I'd greatly appreciate the assistance. Thank you, Veronica
