    2. DEBBIE WOOLF: I have written an e-mail to each of my Senators, Elizabeth Dole & John Edwards, regarding this matter. Thanks for alerting me about this situation. SOLOMON HOWARD RICH ========================================================= From: Debbie Woolf <woolfpac@prodigy.net> To: GAUNION-L@rootsweb.com Date: Thu, 9 Dec 2004 15:40:34 -0800 Subject: [GAUNION] Fw: [SE-TN] New Bill dealing with records Forwarded with permission to share. We should all act NOW or it's too late, valuable records for genealogy will be lost to us. It's only the beginning of what I think is going to happen. There is a panic about privacy due to the 9-11 tradegy. Some states have already locked up some records, or made it harder to get and removing some vital info. so it's not the actual record. This is serious, even though it may not seem to be at first glance. ACT NOW, you have permission to forward as you see fit. Pass the word. Let everyone know about it. I saw it mentioned on TV as well. If we don't let them know it needs changing somehow we may be cutting our own throats. Sharon: ===================================================== SHARON: May I forward this to the lists I host? Is it okay to forward it to other lists? or people we know? Thanks, Debbie ===================================================== From: <sharonmc2002@aol.com> To: <SE-TN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 08, 2004 2:30 AM Subject: [SE-TN] New Bill dealing with records New Bill Will Close Records to Genealogists HR10, which was mentioned in the 13 October issue of RootsWeb Review, has passed out of the U.S. House of Representatives and is now part of S.2845. The amendments suggested by David Rencher in his letter to the bill's sponsor, Congressman J. Dennis Hastert, were NOT incorporated into this legislation. Thus, the terms of HR10 will now be considered by the Senate, as part of S.2845. If S.2845 becomes law, as now written, family historians will face some real challenges in attempts to obtain birth records, even on long- deceased individuals. Specifically, what genealogists need to do is suggest to their lawmakers the addition of Sec. 3061(b)(1)(A)(iii) that would read: "who is alive on the date that access to their birth certificate is requested." This addition would clarify that the legislation (soon to be law) applies ONLY to birth certificates of CURRENTLY LIVING PERSONS. If you do not know your U.S. Senator's e-mail address, you can find it at http://www.senate.gov/ This bill can be found online at http://thomas.loc.gov/ Put in S.2845 (in the bill number window) and then select item No.3; and go to Subtitle B--Identity Management Security; Chapter 2-- Improved Security for Birth Certificates. ==== GAUNION Mailing List ==== --- Author Retains Copyright --- -- Copyright 2004 Author -- All Rights Reserved Post to List: GAUNION-L@rootsweb.com http://www.selfroots.com Unsubscribe request To: GAUNION-L-request@rootsweb.com ARCHIVES: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl ============================== View and search Historical Newspapers.
