Leslie, I have had luck searching with different variations of spelling for some of my surnames. Did you search for spelling variations of Caldwell/Colwell. Could be more but I noticed in the 1850 Union Census there is a CALDWELL, Thomas 59 NC #57 and the 1880 census is COLWELL, Thomas, 90, NC, 207, GL. Probably the same person because the age fits.
