Dear Wylene, I keep getting queries, mainly, I guess, because I have accessed the GAUNION - L@rootsweb.com. I am not a Wetzel descendant, nor do I know much about them, except I felt I needed to tell you that I was editor and compiler of Facets of Fannin: A History of Fannin County, GA, Vol. I, published first in 1989 and now in its 6th printing. The way the Wetzel name was spelled in Fannin County was Witzel. Apppearing in the 1860 Fannin County, GA census (Fannin County was formed in 1854 out of Union and Gilmer) were two Witzel families. Maybe you know this already. Ebenezer Witzel, born in NC, was age 53, a farmer, living in the Pierceville Section (MD #1205) of Fannin County, with his wife, Minerva, age 41, and two children at home then: John, age 14, and Hulda, age 10. Ebenezer Witzel was quite wealthy for that time, reporting assets of $2,500 in real estate and $1,000 in money. His wife was born in SC and the two children were born in Georgia. The other Witzel family reported in 1860 Fannin Census was John C. Witzel, age 48, born in NC, with assets of $700 property and $600 money. His wife was Charlotte, age 38, also born in NC. Listed children were Enny J, 17, Martha J, 17 (twin girls?) Winny, 12, Thomas E, 10, William E, 4 and John E. 4 (twins sons?). This family lived in the Morganton District #913 of Fannin County. Only one Witzel family article was submitted for Facets of Fannin, and it was written by Al Clift. It was about the family of John H. Witzel who Married Harriett McClure. A picture taken on the porch of their home in Blue Ridge in 1895 was submitted to the book. It shows John H. and his wife Harriet; and their sons Eb, John Edward and Jim. No dates were given in the family article for any of the family members. The writer did state that John H. Witzel took a leading part in business, political, church and educationa affairs in Blue Ridge, and had a leading part in establishing the Southern Methodist Church there. He owned a commissary where he sold grocieries, hardware, and general goods. He served as Ordinary of Fannin County and in the Georgia Legislature as a representative. John H. Witzel died in 1904 frorm an infection caused by a seemingly harmless splinter wound to his hand. His wife, Harriett McClure Witzel, died at age 88 in 1936. I just thought you'd like to explore the Wetzel name spelled Witzel.
