    2. Hi List, Has anyone found any new information on Tobias Woody, b. 1805, in NC? Wanting to find out his parents names. I believe his mother was an Elizabeth Loggins, and his father was named Jonathan or William Woody. Tobias spelled his last name Woodde. Thanks, Carolyn M. Woody-Fuller

    3. Woody--this is an English place name acquired from once having lived in a place called Wu Du-gahaeg in old England. There are two such places, one in Berkshire and one in Hampshire. Spellings between l202-l285 are Widehicie, Wydehaye, Widernhai, Woodehaye and now Woodhays. The meaning is "enclosure in a wood" used in the sense of a small homestead. Coloquial pronunciation has reduced Woodhay to Woody. In VA, Robert woody was granted 200acres of land in Norfolk Co in l653 for paying his own passage and that of three servants to the colony. He sold his land to Joseph Hodgkinson in l656. The l790 census lists families of Woodeys in NH and SC and Woodys in NC and VA. The l880 census for Union Co, Canada Dist lists his age as 75 and Lourany as 35. Tobias was first md to Catherine Watts-Miller (ll8l2-l875)and they are interred in Woody Cem, Suches GA. Much of the existing Woody Lineage history is based on the diary of William Coffee Berry of Avery Creek, NC. This diary was written in l870, and given to each of his children. One, still in existence has been copied by Joyce Burkett who has the copy in her possession. William Woody native of England married Sarah Persel, an English Lady. They emigrated from England and settled in the state of VA. After several moves they settled in NC. They had four sons and four daughters. Apparently there are a number of records documenting the presence of Woodys and Persels in Lowden and Fairfax Counties of VA in the l600's It is possible that these families had been present in the colonies for some time. A court record from VA links the names Authur Purcell and Joseph Woody in the same documents dated Aug 9, l694 placing Woods and Percel together in the colonies even before William'S birth. Williams' age is determined from the Wilkes Co Court minutes, Vol III. He was declared exempt from paying poll tax in l785, indicating his age at 60 years in l785 thus his birth year was c l725.Sent: Friday, December 19, 2003 1:52 PM To: GAUNION-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GAUNION] WOODY-Any new information?
