Peggy and Everyone, I probably should have elaborated on this, didn't think about it at the time. You asked a great question!! I'm going to walk thru this door you opened for me and expand on some other areas that I think our new folks may find helpful. The differences between the query boards and email lists. As to your specific question, Peggy. You will receive email notification when someone posts a reply to your old query, if you originally posted it with that box checked. Need to update your old email addy? No problem. Just tell me what you old addy was and what your current addy is...As the owner of the board, I can fix them for you. Always look at the bottom of any GenConnect board. You'll see the name and email addy of who is maintaining it. They can edit your query only with your permission. Alternatively, you can also go to the bottom of the query board and request a subscription to be notified when anyone posts a query to this board. This is also the case if you want notification of every post on all 6 of our data boards [bio, will, etc.]. This subscription will be the same to you personally as receiving a copy of all posts via our email list. The benefit of this query board subscription method is that everyone has the option of whether they want to get them all or not. It's the best way to have a compromise on the amount of email each person desires to receive about our county queries and at the same time, not duplicate everything going into history. If you do decide to subscribe to receiving all queries, I will also be notified by GenConnect when mail to you stops working for any reason. I then go in and delete that bad email addy from the subscription list as my time permits. I currently do this for abt 45 boards. If I don't perform this maintenance, then my email starts getting out of hand. Both the GAUNION and GAFANNIN email lists are set up to automatically unsub you from either email list if your email addy goes bad AND 3 bounces to your address have occurred. Also, one of most popular complaints I receive is about folks posting queries to the GenConnect system that talk about only a few of the SURNAMES coded in the Surname Box....and not telling sqat about the others. Reminder!!!! It is the surname box that feed the global search engines. It's very frustrating to search out queries on a particular surname only to find most of them never even mention that surname. What about the reverse situation? Not coding in ALL the surnames that were mentioned in the post. That query was missed by a fellow researcher using the global search engine. PLEASE, everyone, try to pay attention to this because you will not only help yourself over the long run, but also help out your fellow researchers. I cannot go in and edit these old queries to fix this problem because that is against the GenConnect rules. Our Query boards are for posting QUESTIONS about who we are researching.....not to carry on a conversation. Reminder...everything you say goes into history. Respond with some concrete, helpful information and include not just names...but places and dates. If you want to discuss the possibilities further about a connection, email the person that posted that query. Their addy is right there with the query. Our email list, on the other hand is designed for conversations about our county's ancestors. Start chatting and have a good time...just please stay on the topic...genealogy specific to our 2 neighboring counties: Union and Fannin, GA. Thanks to all for listening...
