    3. Names can be tricky when looking at the indian rolls. Indians often had more than one "indian" name and an anglo name as well. we often know their anglo names and look for them and fail to find them. For instance, Big Witch is Joseph LONG. You will find that on the rolls. You also may want to find the native name for the word you want, such as LONG. DEBBIE ------Original Message------ From: "Mike Cummons" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: September 4, 2000 10:01:48 PM GMT Subject: [GAUNION] Indian Jones/Longs I don't know why I assumed it was the JONES, I guess because I didn't think the LONGS had Indian blood. I have heard the story of a LONG living with the Indians after he killed that man for trying to take his land. This had to be before the revolution. And I also have received some info a WILSON buying property for his Indian girlfriend so she didn't have to live on the reservation in NC. That was another shock. I just learned this info yesterday while we were out of town for a wedding and we were all sitting around the table having breakfast. My aunt said she had seen pictures of Margaret LONG WILSON's brothers and sisters and they all looked like Indians. There are also stories in my family of pictures of Indians being destroyed. I have tried to do some research in the Indian rolls today but other than a John Wilson I haven't found any LONGs or JONES. Take a look >at where you are BEFORE you post to these boards!!! I cannot find my files right at the moment because we had the house treated for termites, especially my office and everything is moved all over the house. However, I know that a daughter of Basil E. Kilpatrick who lived NC and Ga., and I believe died ca 1872 in Cherokee Co., NC, had a daughter who married a man named Jones who was Indian. I believe that on the 1870 Cherokee Co. census (possibly 1860, they are living not very far from Basil. Just found my file and it was the 1860 census. His daughters name was Martha and she married Avery Jones. I also have a small writeup from a Walker Co, Ga. book, because that is where they moved. According to this article......."John Jones was b 1804 from Indian parents who lived in Cherokee, NC. John married Frances Gourd, also from Cherokee. Their son Ayers (note different spelling then what I had on my family sheet) was born in 1840. Ayers married Martha Kilpatrick and they had five children = Aquilla (Quill), Telia, John, Basil, and Greer.. There is a little more. This page was sent to me by someone years ago and does not have the name of the book, but it appears to be one of those "Heritage of........" books like they did for NC counties, because the heading says John Jones Family and it is numbered 670, written by Margie Purcell. The above mentioned Aquilla (Quill) married Laura Barclay in 1863 and had nine children. You mentioned Wilsons. Do you know of a Zebeon (I figure it might be Zebulon) Wilson who married a Martha Kilpatrick in Union Co. Ga. around 1840-41? Shirley Reed
