I considered the LONGs being Indians all day yesterday and I came to the conclusion they aren't. My line, Levi LONG, is well documented within the white community. There are deeds, court records, wills etc and if he was of Indian blood I don't think he would have even lived in the white community. Indians didn't live in middle NC in the 1800s. Later on maybe one of them married an Indian but I wouldn't think it was while they were living in Burke County, NC. With all I've read about the relationship with the Indians and the white people it just seems unlikely that the LONGs were Indian, at least my branch. I could be wrong and I sure don't know anything about Elizabeth "Betty" JONES parents. I did read in one of Mr. Stanley's books yesterday about two Indian families living up in the area, unfortunately he doesn't give there names. It's my understanding the GARLANDs were of Indian heritage, Mr. Stanley may have mentioned this also. If the Indian part is true, I don't think it took place in Burke County but possibly in TN. I believe Margaret LONG (daughter of Levi and Elizabeth and wife of Boyd WILSON) in one of the later census says she was born in TN. I've always thought the WILSONs lived for a time in TN, possibly Carter County. I found a Larkin WILSON there in 1830, right age. There are many other Union County surnames in the census also. I try to research these people as a group since they usually intermarried and traveled together. This has really opened up a new avenue of research! Georgia Mathis Cummons Jacksonville, FL
