I have been following the Lance emails here and I too, am a descendant from this branch. A lot of my info is documented from the actual gravestones and also a wonderful book from the Union County Historical Society on the history of Union County, GA. I have Volume I and they are currently putting together Volume II. This is the info I have: John Henry Lance b. July 24, 1808 m. to Jane Jones, b. Sept 24, 1801. Both were born in Haywood County, NC. John's father was Samuel Riley Lance/Lentz b. 1768 but was married to Rosannah Saultz on April 3, 1786. Amongst many other children, they did have a son named Samuel Riley Lance who was married to Rebecca Hunter. The branches proceed as this: 5. John Henry Lance b. Jul 24 1808 4. Samuel Riley Lance b. 1768 3. Peter Lentz/Lance b. 1732 (in Heidelburg, Germany) 2. Johann Peter (Hans Petrus) Lentz b. 1710/1711 (in Postoroff, Germany) 1. Heinrich Lentz b. Abt. 1655-1686 The Lances/Lentz arrived from Germany to Charleston, SC in 1750. If you are able to get your hands on the Volume I book from Union County, it is well worth the $50.00. Unfortunately I lent my out so I cannot look up the name "Spivey" since I do not see it in my trees. I have looked in the Union County Cemetery Records book (another great book which lists all the graves in Union County through at least 1996). It shows several dozen entries for "Spivia" or Spiva" but there are no Spivey's listed. Could this be an alternate spelling?
Yes the alternate spelling is indeed my family. I've actually seen it spelled "what seems like a million different ways", but the two you gave are the same. Spiva is the original spelling of our name but some changed it to Spivey along the way, my father for one. Anything with Spivey or anything that even sounds remotely close is probably one and the same.
