    1. Re: [GAUNION] WETZEL DNA
    2. Dear Wylene, I keep getting queries, mainly, I guess, because I have accessed the GAUNION - L@rootsweb.com. I am not a Wetzel descendant, nor do I know much about them, except I felt I needed to tell you that I was editor and compiler of Facets of Fannin: A History of Fannin County, GA, Vol. I, published first in 1989 and now in its 6th printing. The way the Wetzel name was spelled in Fannin County was Witzel. Apppearing in the 1860 Fannin County, GA census (Fannin County was formed in 1854 out of Union and Gilmer) were two Witzel families. Maybe you know this already. Ebenezer Witzel, born in NC, was age 53, a farmer, living in the Pierceville Section (MD #1205) of Fannin County, with his wife, Minerva, age 41, and two children at home then: John, age 14, and Hulda, age 10. Ebenezer Witzel was quite wealthy for that time, reporting assets of $2,500 in real estate and $1,000 in money. His wife was born in SC and the two children were born in Georgia. The other Witzel family reported in 1860 Fannin Census was John C. Witzel, age 48, born in NC, with assets of $700 property and $600 money. His wife was Charlotte, age 38, also born in NC. Listed children were Enny J, 17, Martha J, 17 (twin girls?) Winny, 12, Thomas E, 10, William E, 4 and John E. 4 (twins sons?). This family lived in the Morganton District #913 of Fannin County. Only one Witzel family article was submitted for Facets of Fannin, and it was written by Al Clift. It was about the family of John H. Witzel who Married Harriett McClure. A picture taken on the porch of their home in Blue Ridge in 1895 was submitted to the book. It shows John H. and his wife Harriet; and their sons Eb, John Edward and Jim. No dates were given in the family article for any of the family members. The writer did state that John H. Witzel took a leading part in business, political, church and educationa affairs in Blue Ridge, and had a leading part in establishing the Southern Methodist Church there. He owned a commissary where he sold grocieries, hardware, and general goods. He served as Ordinary of Fannin County and in the Georgia Legislature as a representative. John H. Witzel died in 1904 frorm an infection caused by a seemingly harmless splinter wound to his hand. His wife, Harriett McClure Witzel, died at age 88 in 1936. I just thought you'd like to explore the Wetzel name spelled Witzel. 2. Jacob WETZEL b. abt. 1751 is my g g g g  grandfather. I have been researching him for years and years and have not yet found his parents. Jacob WETZEL was a RWS.  One of my cousins has been able to prove his line back to him, and has been accepted into SARS.  This cousins sister has applied to the DARS and will probably be accepted soon. Jacob WETZEL was born about 1751, I kinow not where, but he showed up in Lincoln Co., NC quite a while before the ARW. He married a Margaret Summey, dau of Peter Summey. He moved down to Buncombe Co., NC about 1802, he died in 1824 in Henderson Co., NC.  An area that used to be in Buncombe Co., NC. I have found a website that will do DNA tests and compare them with other early, early Wetzels.  They only have a couple of tests already posted. Others will be showing up as the website is fairly new. Of course it is not free!   I am asking if any descendants of Jacob WETZEL  who read this and  would like to share in the cost, to contact me. The test will be $159.00, altogether  Please contact me to join us.  I will see how many wants to join for about a week. When I have a   good ideal of how many want to share in any discovery we may make I will then email you with what your share of the cost will be. The person donating the DNA for  our test must be a male that carrys the WETZEL surname. Jacob WETZEL was the father of eight children, 3 of which was boys....John, Henry and Jacob.  There are living men that carry the name of WETZEL!  HOWEVER TO SHARE IN THE COST AND GET THE RESULTS YOU CAN BE A MALE OR FEMALE. I would love to find proof of Jacob WETZEL back to Europe, which is what the WETZEL website says is it object. Wylene Alston WyleneL@aol.com

I seek to make contact with anyone, telephone or postal address will do just fine, who is descended from or knows someone descended from: Jessie Deaver 1897-1975, Henry Deaver 1903-1946, or Wayne Deaver 1911-1963. Jessie Deaver was married to Ardilla UNK and is buried in the Liberty Cemetery in Union Co. Henry Deaver was married to Julia Deyton and is buried in Liberty. I do not know if Wayne was ever married. These three brothers had another brother named Dewey who died at age 20. He was briefly married to my great aunt Maybelle Odom until his untimely death.

    1. Re: [GAUNION] John and Adolphus Higdon
    2. edj0513
    3. Dear Tamie Harding, Are you aware that there is a Higdon Family Association that meets in various places around the country once a year? I have a very good elderly friend in Copperhill, TN who is in poor health now and can't attend (she will be 94 if she lives until August), whose husband was Walter Q. Higdon of Copperhill, TN. Mr. Walter died in 1963, I believe it was. HIs wife, Rachel McKey Higdon and I used to teach together at West Fannin High School in Blue Ridge. We also worked together in church and community activities. Her husband, Walter Higdon, was one of the first trustees of Truett McConnell College, Cleveland, GA. And Walter's sister, the late Bonnie Higdon Reaves, gave quite a sizeable endowment upon her death to fund college education scholarships at the Bonnie Higdon Reaves Campus of what was Truett McConnell College, Epworth, GA--but unfortunately Truett McConnell pulled out and, fortunately, Toccoa Falls College is now the academic provider of classes on that location at Epworth, GA. That was a long paragraph to introduce you to my friends Rachel McKey Higdon and her late husband, Walter Q. Higdon. He used to own and operate the Ford Motor dealership in Copperhill, TN back in the 40s, 50s, 60s. Walters earliest ancestor to Fannin County Georgia (and Fannin was formed from Union County, GA in 1854) was Leonard Higdon (1828-1918). He was living in the area by at least 1853, moving from Jackson County, NC. That first settler Leonard Higdon had a son, John Spenser Higdon (1865-1890). The Fannin County Leonard Higdon had a brother, Samuel Higdon (b. 1821, death date unknown) who married Mary "Polly" Queen and lived in North Georgia (either in Union or Gilmer, from which Fannin was carved in 1854). In 1866, immediately after the Civil War, Samuel Higdon defeated the legendary Ben Dugger, who had represented the 41st District composed of Fannin, Gilmer and Pickens Counties in North Georgia. To defeat Ben Duggar showed Samuel Higdon's prowess as a politician. Samuel Higdon and his wife Polly had nine children: Tira, Glenn, James Wiley, Samuel, Harriet, Jane, Elzade, Baxter, Polly and Fairbe. Leonard and Samuel Higdon's parents were Leonard and Eve Huffman Higdon. The Leonard who settled in what became known as the Higdon's Store section of Fannin (you guessed it! He started a store there--and a post office named Higdon's Store!) was in the Colwell District of Fannin County, GA married Mary Ann McClure. I didn't know all of this on my own. Several articles about the Higdon Families were written by Rachel Higdon and Bonnie Higdon Reaves for FACETS OF FANNIN: A HISTORY OF FANNIN COUNTY, GEORGIA, VOLUME 1 which I edited. It was published first in 1989 and is now in its 6th printing--a 683-page history of the county and many of its families ($80 + $10 S&H) Although I did not find information about the two you asked about, I have a feeling that they were related to the Fannin County Higdons. You may be able to go online and find out information about the Higdon Family Association. Rachel is too infirm to attend the reunions any more--and she enjoyed them so much as long as she was able to go! So, your Daniel Asbury and my Elisha were brothers. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Hazel LeBlanc" <gen-search@cox.net> To: <GAUNION-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, February 19, 2004 8:58 PM Subject: Re: [GAUNION] Wiley T. 1. [GAUNION] Wiley T. Sullivan, William Clark Sullivan
    2. William Clark Sullivan b. 1874, was married to Rebecca J. Prater. They were born and lived in Union Co GA. According to the 1880 Census, William's father was Wiley T. Sullivan b. 1851 and his mother was Mary G. UNK. I am looking for Mary's maiden name. But mainly I wish to find out who Wiley T. Sullivan's parents were. I believe they were also living in Union Co.
