Ancestry is a business. Merging and linking the data they have is a smart business move. Many unsuspecting individuals will fork over their credit card number to get the garbage that has been 'donated.' When they decide not to renew they will spend months trying to stop their subscriptions and credit card charges. Many of the trees submitted to Ancestry have glaring errors and no documentation noted, merged families, and children that do not exist. The same is true of the Morman Church records (IGI, and Ancestral files). This new subscription service will make it harder than ever to educate people to CHECK SOURCES. The really scary part is--some individuals will find a tree that shows that their great-grand someone is a descendant of a President, King, famous or infamous individual and take it as "Gospel." MyFamily.Com (parent of Ancestry) also owns FamilyTreeMaker and Rootsweb. How long will it be before the mailing list becomes a paid subscription? Rootsweb also provides "FREE" space for the, volunteer-not for profit, USGENWEB project. MyFamily.Com has some really smart marketing managers - they got suckers like you and I to do the research, transcribe records, and now they can legally steal it and resell it. This is what is going on with Ancestry according to Marsha Bryant my genweb coordinator on another newsletter I belong to: What is being SOLD is a subscription to an advanced search feature that will match data from the free (still free) family trees and that found in other pay databases and census records at Ancestry and present it to the subscriber in a neatly stitched together package -- taking the work out of the searching and matching. What is being SOLD is CONVENIENCE and not the trees. The trees are still free to submit and free to search and match using the same tools that have always been part of the program. Nothing has changed in that regard. Diane M. This assessment of the Ancestry.Com rip off is about as accurate as it gets......and i salute you for attempting to point this out to the "suckers" as u so aptly described some of us....... And they've made millions off the scam idea that was coneived by the people who put this whole idea in motion........again for what its worth......Thanks!!!!!!!!!!
Too bad many more people dont speak out as grand_ma has done....we should all cancel our subscriptions to Ancestry.com, urge those who are thinking of subscribing to FORGET it, and hope that they get the message that not everyone is out just for the "$'s" If no one subscribes, or renews, who can they charge....they can just sit and read the "free" work they have been given Nvsf29@aol.com wrote:In a message dated 5/5/2004 6:34:40 AM EST, grand_ma@hotmail.com writes: << MyFamily.Com has some really smart marketing managers - they got suckers like you and I to do the research, transcribe records, and now they can legally steal it and resell it. try http://www.gencircles.com they are the one's who sold (I think Ancestry), in other words the original developers, they made a bundle, could not come back for 2 years and came back with even a better product. They are 'promising' to keep it free forever, stating they do not need to sell it this time. They way they make their money is with a genealogy program designed to go hand in hand with the site, however, you do not need the program to view the site and get information...so in other words, it's optional to buy it if you want it. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Nvsf29@aol.com> To: <GAUNION-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, May 04, 2004 11:33 AM Subject: Re: [GAUNION] Ancestry World Tree Project In a message dated 5/4/2004 11:40:41 AM EST, WyleneL@aol.com writes: << The Family Trees that have been donated to Ancestry for free distribution to other researchers are about to be sold by subscription: the OneWorldTree Preview cost will be $49.95 for 14 months. How about everyone uniting in a class action suit rather than complaining about it. They should make enough money from people visiting their webb site and other commerical activities to pay everyone, who contributed their family tree information, a royality each time someone wanted to view the data they submitted. That would make it equitable for everyone. Or we could sue to keep the data free as that was the pretense it was collected under.

Hi, I would encourage everyone to look at the Ancestry.com preview of OneWorldTree. From their published preview, Ancestry is NOT taking family trees and simply re-selling them. I'm sure we'd all have a problem with that. What Ancestry is doing is taking submitted, published family trees and "stitching" them together, along with primary sources, to create a "webbed," extended family tree; that is, one made by COMBINING multiple trees. That is not the same thing as merely repackaging and then selling a GEDCOM, say, that one of us has submitted. Speaking only for myself, this seems to be exactly what all of us would like to have happen, similar in nature -- if not as scientific -- as the DNA studies many of our families and family associations currently are employing to "stitch" together extended family histories. None of us as individuals has the resources to do this for ourselves and, since there is creative work involved on Ancestry's part in creating this new format of information, I don't see a problem with them charging for it. Again, it's not a simple transfer of "free" information, merely bundling it and reselling it, as I read their information. As noted by WyleneL@aol.com, people can opt out but I'm not sure why one would want to. Isn't linking our trees one of the things genealogy is about and that all of us do all the time? This simply multiplies the possibilities because of a giant database and huge computer support resources. Now, we can argue about the price Ancestry's charging -- too steep for me -- but that's a different issue. And, of course, people opt in for that. Thank you. Michael Jones
