Linda, I am serching for information on my ggrandfather Cotter L. Jones, bn. 1846-dd.1892 (Buried at Mt. Plesant) and his father, Benjaminn Watson Jones born in N.C. about 1825.. I cannot find any information on Benjamin Watson Jones , other than the voter's registration and the 1880 census. I have copies of the Union and Fannin cemetary books and the history books from Fannin and Union. There is only the grave listed for Cotter in the Union County cemetary book. I feel confident there is someone out there looking for this family line.. I sure would appreciate their getting in touch with me. Thank you. Peggy Jones Chapman

MARTHA CLAYTON CLEMENT: Thanks very much for this information. I had no idea when she died, nor where she died. I have looked for her gravesite in the big book of "CEMETERY RECORDS OF UNION COUNTY, GEORGIA" but it does not list her. The Union County Historical Society made this book, but they failed to list everyone in the cemeteries when they made the survey for the book in the late 1980s. In other words, they overlooked some of the grave sites. Do you know where Sylvania is buried? In the meantime I will attempt to find her relatives on the Internet address you show in your e-mail. I want to thank Wylene Alston ,who many years ago, when snail mail was the only genealogy contact I had, was so kind to send me the" Colonel John Alston" booklet that was such a great help finding my Alston family. I decend from Henry Alston from No Carolina to Ga. who's son, James Alston married Nancy Berry, born in Union Co,Ga. Their son Thomas Henry Alston b.1844 married Francis Cash b.1847,Habersham,Ga. James married Nancy July 4th 1803. I understand they are buired in Union County. For the interest of this family, My Grandfather Marshall Alston changed the spelling to Aulston ,when he left Oklahoma on the run in the 1930's and settled in California. Thanks again ,Wylene,Glynda

Hi, everyone! Many years ago, Tim Seawolf-Self and I began this listserv for Union County... Most unfortunately, Wylene Alston, who has done such a great job in the past few years, is not feeling well and is unable to manage it any longer... The good people at USGenWeb/RootsWeb have given the list back to us, and we're happy to say that we can now help you both on this list and on the Union County, GA websites... Some of you may know that Tim Seawolf-Self (your real list manager--I'm the correspondent) comes from the Union County Self line. His own ancestors lived there for almost a century before moving on to Texas, and many of his cousins of a variety of surnames live there today... Thanks so much to Virginia Crilley who has kept the list going in Wylene's absence... I hope this news is as exciting to you as it is to us! Could "Lucinda Long" be from one of the Union Co., GA MATHIS families? In order to find the maiden name of Lucinda, the wife of William R. Long, I ordered the death certificate of their daughter, Sarah Louisa Long Higdon (wife of Tyrus Glenn Higdon). Sarah's daughter, Mrs. Mae Phillips, was the informant on the death certificate. Mae gave Sarah's parents as 'Riley Long' and 'Sallie Mathis.' The father is consistently listed in census as 'William', but I found land records for him in Graham Co., NC that were signed 'William R.' Sarah had a brother named 'George Riley' ...so maybe the 'R' in her father's was, indeed 'Riley' and maybe he was frequently called 'Riley,' also. Sarah's mother's name, as given on the dc, is somewhat more baffling to me. She is always listed as 'Lucinda' in census records; yet, at her mother's death Mae says her grandmother's name was 'Sallie Mathis.' Could Mae have made a mistake about her grandmother's name ...or was her grandmother's full maiden name something like 'Sarah Lucinda MATHIS?' I strongly suspect that William R. Long was a brother of Charles R. Long because they were listed in the 1850 Union Co., GA consecutively (as if lived next door to each other). I have not been able to find a marriage record for Wm. R. & Lucinda in either North Carolina or Georgia. Charles R. Long and his wife, Ruth Honeycutt, eventually migrated to Alabama. Wm. R and 'Lucinda' settled in Graham Co., NC. Does anyone have any clues as to who the parents of Sallie Lucinda Mathis could be? Thanks so much, ...Charlotte 1850 Union Co., GA census Dist. 85; p.521-261B; #817 LONG ....
