    1. Online Obituary
    2. Roy & Linda Garrett
    3. As many of you may know, The North Georgia News (Mr. Kenneth West) granted me permission to post the obituary notice of your loved one on the Union County (http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaunion/) and Towns County (http://www.rootsweb.com/~gatowns/) websites. IF you feel that this has been a benefit to you, I am asking you to show your appreciation by simply sending an email to Mr. West and indeed the entire staff (especially Patsy) letting them know that this has been an aide to you in your genealogical research. You may email them at the following: ngnews@alltel.net and be sure to visit their website located at: http://www.nganews.com. We are very fortunate that permission was given. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration. Linda Walden Garrett

    1. We second Linda's request...
    2. Barbara Ann
    3. Mr. West and the North Georgia News have been just wonderful to us! Even before the obituary project, they had agreed to reprinting articles from their newspaper... In addition, we'd like to thank Linda Garrett, right here on the list, for all she has done. She initiaited both projects, and all the entries you see on the obituaries have been typed directly by her own hands (which must be pretty tired at this point). So please remember Linda in your "thank-yous" too... All of us who work on the Union and Towns County sites have had so much fun together--the world should get along as well as we do with Ken and Linda! 1. Saxons in Union and White County.
    2. June Saxon
    3. I am researching my husband's Saxons/Saxtons/Sextons in Union County, GA. I have found them in the 1860 Choastoah census. Father was Adam (Allen) S. Saxton, wife Elvira, William (Billy Jay) Elijah Sr. age 6. I am trying to prove how William Elijah died c. 1891. He died in either White county or Lumpkin County. Folklore has it that he was a moonshine runner and was being chased by the sheriff. "Billy Jay" was in a horse and buggy or wagon and overturned in an accident and died at the scene. This was told to my husband by his grandfather, Robert Alonzo Saxon, son of "Billy Jay". Does anyone have any information on this? June Saxon mollystark@earthlink.net Why Wait? Move to EarthLink.

    2. Melanie, I will let her know, it will mean so much. I knew Ralph, he was a doll! He had such a great sense of humor. I lived in Blairsville from '93 to '96 and I loved talking to your dad. He knew a lot about different families in the area too! Thanks for the note, you made my day. 2. James and Lisa Butts
    3. Jamie, Thanks. That info helped a lot , especially with Susannah Gaddis and the Medaris line of the family. I had the same info regarding Capt. Allen Gaddis. Matilda Gaddis Sharp married Andrew Jackson Butt and the story I have says they left Union County went to Colorado , although it could have been another western state. .I have not been able to locate them after they left Union County . The story about Andrew and Matilda going West was provided to me by Ed Mauney, who had been fortunate enough to know some of the children and grandchildren of many of the area's pioneer families. Susannah Butt had married a Mr. Black 1st and had John Butt Black b.August 16, 1826 who married Kizzie Crumley ; Martin Black , b.Abt. 1823 and married Rebecca Irwin; Evan Black, b. Abt. 1831; and Elizabeth Black ,b.Abt. 1828 and married William Colwell. Thanks again for your help. James B. 1. Blairsville Library Info
    2. I received some additional information on the library in Blairsville. They do not have any microfilm and have one small shelf of genealgoy information. It is kept in the directors office. Apparently, several items have "walked out" so you would need to ask for it. They do receive the Self and Dyer family newsletters and have the heritage and cemetery books. It sounds like the historical society will be your best bet in Blairsville and the Mountain Regional Library in Young Harris as previously discussed. Regards, -- Jamie Crump jamie.crump@att.net

    1. Re: [GAUNION] Union County Library
    2. Donna, It has been a couple of years since I was in the B/ville library but at that time they had no records and no plans for any. I sent an e-mail off to a member of the Friends of the Library group to confirm. If you are doing a trip to the B'ville area, I can suggest two places for research. The historical society is in the courthouse on the square and is building a decent genealogy library of both books as well as a few "unpublished" collections that locals have donated. Jane Thompson works for the historical society and is fabulous about helping folks find information. She is also born and raised in Union County and so has a lot of personal knowledge as well. She is there most days. The head of the historical society - Steve Oakly is not from Union County and doesn't have much interest in the genealogy. He'll likely point you to the bookshelves and you are on your own. There is a library in Young Harris (next town over), I believe it is called the Mountain Regional Library that has a very nice genealogy collection and they would be more inclined to have microfilm records available. Again, it has been a few years since I have been in there, but they have always been most helpful. There are quite a few records available in the courthouse in Blairsville in the Probate Judge's office and they are very nice about providing access. Marriage records, court records, voting lists, birth and death are all in the Probate office. All but birth and death, you can peruse on your own. I was there just this past Thanksgiving holiday time and they were great as always. Land records are in the same building but a different office. Like Probate, they are very helpful and friendly. I would suggest calling ahead to be sure of hours and what's available. Good Luck!
