Hi: My name is Becky Howell. I am the County Coordinator for the Haywood County NCGENWEB. I am also a member of the board of directors of the National Allison Family Association and a few other genealogy based organisations. In other words, I'm obsessed with genealogy, especially obsessed with cemeteries. My main descendancies are as follows: 1. John Howell of Wales and Isle of Wight, Va. 2. Thomas Allanson of London, England and Charles County, Md. 3. James Micknab (McNabb) of Glen Dochart, Perthshire, Scotland and Monroe, Pa. 4. Edward Leatherwood of Annapolis, Md. 5. Solomon and Fanna Gibson of Haywood County, NC. The Gibsons are my brick wall. The ancestors of neither Solomon or Fanna can be determined. 6. Thomas Nathaniel and Isabella Downing Edwards of Western North Carolina. The names of their parents are undiscovered as well. I have 5 books on the cemeteries of Haywood County NC published at this time and hope to add more books in the spring. I also have 1 book of photos of Haywood Countians published at this time. http://www.rootsweb.com/~nchaywoo/booksforsale.htm Becky Howell Haywood County NCGENWEB County Coordinator National Allison Fam. I don't post a lot here but do check things that are posted. I research the Gooch name and allied names associated with. Since there were and still are many Gooches in the area, I am inviting anyone interested to contact me if they have interest in working together. I do have a Gooch site on MyFamily.com and individually invite any who are interested to send me an email to that effect. It is an active site, but I say the 'More the Merrier' and who knows when a mutual association will help both parties. Best regards. Since I too am a Lance descendant, I had to read this book. I fully intend on writing Charles Hill to commend him for his fine writing. The writing was so superb that I felt like I was transported back into time to that era. And it's good to know the truth! I had no idea of this conspiracy. Yes, I do recommend this book as well.

Typically, in Georgia, the medical information is blocked out unless you are a direct family member. I was also told that a recent change requires that the various governments issue only certified copies of death certificates and the charge for that is $10.00 each. We used to be able to get a plain old copy for a few cents, but no longer - unless the clerk hasn't read the memos from the state, as happened in one county I recently visited. :-) On Fri, 31 Dec 2004 11:00:12 -0800, SharonBoyerBates <SharonBoyerBates@aol.com> wrote: > Dear List, > Me Too. > I ordered a Union County Death Certificate and the medical portion was > covered up before it was copied for me. I had the privilege of interviewing Charles E. Hill last April about his book, "Blood Mountain Covenant; A Son's Revenge." He, along with his wonderful wife, Jackie Lance Hill, not only spoke of the circumstances surrounding Reverend John Henry Lance's heinous murder (this was Mrs. Hill's great-grandfather) but they even took me on a tour throughout Choestoe to the actual scenes relevant to the story. Mr. Hill devoted a lot of time and energy in writing this book because he and the family felt that the article by the murderer's defense attorney, Carl Wellborn, Jr, that appeared in the Atlanta Journal and Constitution newspaper in 1925 very much maligned and "romanticized" the real story beyond the actual truth. I highly recommend this book to those of you that are linked to or otherwise interested in Union County history, even if you have no connections to the Lance family. Mr. Hill has done a fantastic job describing the culture of the mountain folks, their wonderful way of speaking, their love of family and their beloved mountains. The interview, as well as the photos I took, are posted at http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaunion. While I don't know if this might be the murder that you speak of in previous posts, I do hope this will help answer some of the questions that have come up. Again, let me say that I highly recommend that you read this story. If anything, it will give you a better understanding of the triumphs and heartaches that our Union County ancestors endured in their daily lives. Martha Clayton Clement
From oral history: My gg grandfather, Isaac Ingram, was on jury duty in Blairsville, GA (Union, Co., GA) in 1859 where he died with several others while serving. While dining out, they reportledly drank milk from a cow that had eaten a poisened root. If anyone has seen this news article or has info about it, I would appreciate the name of the paper and the exact date of the article. Thanks in advance. Betty

I thought the story seemed familiar, but not until Molly did her post did I know for sure. A distant cousin in the Lance family shared the story of this ancestor that I believe was recounted in the newspapers at the time. The story he sent was on of those newspaper stories I think...though can't get to it due to computer problems. I contacted the cousin and he said said the details seemed like the Lance story though he questioned the Lakes mentioned. According to him: " I am very familiar with this lake as well as its sister lake, " Lake Chatuge ".. I have a place on Chatuge, in Hiwassee, and being an avid boater, I know both of these lakes well.. The point being here is- That at the time of the murder of our cousin Rev. John Henry Lance,, Lake Notaly, did not then exist.. Lake Noally is a part of the TVA system and built in the 1940's or 50's." I am pasting info. from Amazon.com below about the book. Now I'm going to have to get a copy to read about this ancestor! Molly thanks for posting it! Tony Pope Researching in Union County: Harkins, Tow / Towe, Millsaps From Amazon.com Cost: $22.06 (hardcover) Zell Miller, U.S. Senator "Charles Hill....has written a gripping account...I enjoyed it very much and you will, too." Product Description: The factual account of a late nineteenth-century Georgian mountain town, "Blood Mountain Covenant: A Son’s Revenge" is the story behind the gruesome murder of John Lance, a man who preached the word of God and was loved by the friends and family of his small town. Trouble begins for John Lance and his family when Jim, the narrator of the story and son of the late John Lance, is attacked by a group of notorious outlaws and viciously beaten. This incident serves as the catalyst for John Lance’s outcry of injustice over this violent assault, and ultimately leads to his murder and his son’s revenge on the people who committed this act against his family. With photos, documentary pages and actual testimony from the trial of John Lance’s murder, Charles Hill’s "Blood Mountain Covenant: A Son’s Revenge" paints a detailed picture of the people and daily life of a North Georgian town in the nineteenth century, and one family’s struggle to walk the path of righteousness, while warding off the treachery in their midst.
In answer to "mom" in looking for info on a murder. I just glanced at the book again "Blood Mountain Covenant" and saw where there was a T. J. Butt who was a member of the coroner's jury involved in Rev. John Lance's killing. This is in 1890. Don't know if this is the same spelling as her "Botts" being involved in her murder mystery. > [Original Message] > From: mom b <dadscrank101@yahoo.com> > To: <GAUNION-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 1/8/05 10:08:44 AM > Subject: [GAUNION] looking for info on a murder > > i have been told there was a murder of a man name ledford > was murder in fannin co the body was found in notley lake > in union co that there was a botts involve with this > i found this info while asking question doing my family tree > happen maybe in the 1935-1940 > so anybody has any inf on this or can tell me how to find it i appreciate it > > > --------------------------------- > Do you Yahoo!? > All your favorites on one personal page Try My Yahoo! > > > ==== GAUNION Mailing List ==== > --- Author Retains Copyright --- > -- Copyright 2005 Author -- All Rights Reserved > Post to List: GAUNION-L@rootsweb.com http://www.selfroots.com > Unsubscribe request To: GAUNION-L-request@rootsweb.com > ARCHIVES: http://searches2.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl > > ============================== > Search Family and Local Histories for stories about your family and the > areas they lived. Tony, There is a map in the front of the book that is handwritten. It shows a Nottley River east of the Old Salem Church where Rev. John Lance used to preach back in the late 1800s. Of course I don't know if was a drawing of present day or olden times. I just thought it was a coincidence about the first post saying that the man murdered in her family was a Mr. Ledford in 1935-40. I wonder if he is any relation to the Tom Ledford who found the Reverend's body in 1890. This book has fascinated me since I am researching my husband's Saxon/Saxton's family and they lived at the same time period that John Lance did--1860 to 1870 in Choastoah, Union County. I loved this book and you will too! This almost sounds identical to a book I just read (true story) of the murder of Rev. John Lance in 1890 in Union County. He was found by a Joseph Ledford lying by the side of Wolf Creek in Choastoe. The name of the book is Blood Mountain Covenant by Charles E. Hill.
