    3. Go to this link for an explanation of Federal Pension applications re: Tennessee soldiers et al. http://www.tngenweb.org/civilwar/pensions/pension.html . On this page is a link for a database for Union Federal Pension Applications. My guess is that it only contains a small portion of those who filed. Apparently the database is based on information contributed by researchers, but you may get lucky and find a contributor who has researched your relatives. He/she could then tell you what was in the file before you order it. Otherwise this page appears to provide excellent instruction for anyone like yourself who has Southern Unionist ancestors. On this page http://www.tngenweb.org/civilwar/tools.html is a list of people doing lookups for Tennesseans in the Civil War. Also there: 1) a mailing list for people discussing Tennessee in the Civil War. 2) Links to those studying particular units 3) links to query sources and search engines. Those whose ancestors were in Union, Gilmer, Towns Ga. etc. should realize they were within a stones throw of Tennessee and many North Georgians went to Polk Co. for work in the mines. So, don't think it wasn't possible for your ancestors, or their relatives to have joined in Tennessee. All of the links above can be accessed through Tngenweb. There are many on line sources for information on individual regiments. Many have muster rolls containing many members (probably not complete, but substantial) for each company in the regiment. If you also know your ancestors company, you can often find him with relatives. If, for instance, you have a James Nicholson who served in Georgia, and you find 20 James Nicholsons that did, yours would most likely be the one that was in the company formed in his home county and containing known relatives---not full proof, but you can back check to increase your certainty. We are fortunate to have some of the units that were formed in Union and surrounding counties listed on the Union County site. Not all are on yet, but it is far advanced over most other county sites. At some point in the future, we might start building rosters by contributing information we all have--especially for some of the state guard units that tend to be forgotten on civil war sites. But that is another project and the world is full of them. 3. I'm in California, so not a local. Most North Georgians didn't serve in the Union Army. If yours did, you could seek a Federal Pension from the National Archives. Some former Union County residents (Nicholsons) who had moved to Polk Co. Tenn. did serve for the Union. Others may have went across lines to serve. Suggest every one check for genealogical resources in their local libraries. LDS libraries are only one source, but the folks at those libraries know others and can refer you. I took the notes on McBee from a book in a genealogical section of a public library years ago, while looking for such names as Nicholson (Edward L.) and Chastain (Rainey) which were listed among his comrades. 3. Did someone query on McBee's in Union co. recently? A Green McBee filed for a confederate pension in Tennessee. His questionnaire indicated he was from Union Co. and named many of his comrades in the 11th Ga Mtd. Infantry, Co. C. The questionnaire can be found in a series of books "The Tennessee Civil War Veterans Questionnaires. If one is fortunate enough to have an ancestor who filed for one of these pensions, they will find much information in the questionnaire including parents names and birthplaces, father's occupation etc. Green McBees also has such interesting statements on his service as "I only drew one suit from the Government. We had plenty corn bread, bacon, beef occasionally, peas, no coffee." and "I rode horse back home consuming 6 days on the trip". He also names his occupation and church affiliation. GP

I can't stress this enough. The amount of bounced emails and broken email links notifications from the GenConnect boards that I receive is staggering and most of them are concerning AOL users. This is unnecessarily wasting time and resouces, not only to the lists/boards above...but it is affecting everyone involved in the genealogical community which I understand now is about 1/3 of the entire internet.
