GA Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/Union?read=610 Surname: Colwell, Fair, Brown, Brackett ------------------------- Alexander Hamilton Colwell (1826-1908) is buried in Colwell Cemetery, Union County, GA. He was married 1851 in Union County to Elliott Brown (1826-1855) dau of ? Brown and Rachel (maiden name unknown). Elliott is buried in Zebulon Baptist Church Cemetery near Blairsville. Children of Alexander H. & Eliott B. Colwell were Emily Jane and Thomas William. Emily Jane Colwell (1852-1933) married #1 Jerry Rogers in 1878 and #2 Jutt Duckworth in 1900. She is buried in Colwell Cemetery, Union County, GA. Thomas William Colwell (1854-1905) married Ellen M. Brackett in 1877. Their children were Lola (b. 1878), Lillie, and C. Astus.
According the Union County Heritage book John Theodore Colwell is the first Caldwell to change the spelling of the name - he was born 1849 the son of William and Elizabeth Black Caldwell. There is one mention of Calwell also in Union Co. I also noted that Fair was picked up as Fain on some of the census records. Union Co. has most all the census records online at their site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gaunion/Census.htm Although time consuming it would be easier than looking at the microfilm, since volunteers transcribed them for the internet. Also consider looking at the link to Fannin county... I found several of our THOMAS line there, even though they said they were from Union, or even Lumpkin County... it all used to be Union County. I have a couple of Paynes that I know nothing about their family/lies: Dessie Payne (1887-1924) married to Dock Jones (son of John Wesley Jones) and Lula Payne married to Henry Wilson Jones (Dock's brother). Is anyone able to give me some information about them? Thank you very much. Leslie Ferguson Gervais, Oregon
I'll bet on COLWELL. I have a couple of them in the database from Union Co.

Hi Jerry, Sorry I've been so long in getting back to you regarding Hannah Nicholson and Samuel Morgan. I don't have a lot of info. on Samuel and Hannah except that they married in Union Co. GA or Polk Co.,TN. I know they were living in Polk Co. in 1860 along with Samuel and Hannah. (according to 1860 Census) James and Mary Ann's children include: John Davis b. 1861 GA d. KSCity?, Dora b. 1867 m. James E. Satterfield , Lumpkin Co. GA, Elena (Lena) ab. 1870 m. Evan Gaddis 1891; Elizabeth b. 1872 d. 1928 in KSCity m. L. My GGF James Lafayette is also buried in Ft. Worth and Mary Ann is buried in Cane Creek Cem. in Daholnega, GA. She died in 1904. I took my parents to N. I have been trying to find any information on John Alexander Meadows/Medders, who lived in Clay County, N.C. He married Amanda Stamey on April 1, 1894 in Union Co., Ga. He owned a Gristmill near Pinelog. I have conflicting birthdates for John, one is in April 17, 1858, or 1871. died: December 27, 1950, buried at: Bithberry Cemetery in Clay County, N.C. My family took our vacation to N.C. in June of this year, we failed to come up with the Cemetery or any other infomation on him. John and Amanda had 4 children. I have lots of information on Amanda Stamey but, none on John's parents or sibilings. I would be willing to share any info I have. Thank you in advanced for taking the time to read this. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you, Jorina Roberson Jorina Roberson
I am researching our Davis/Dove/Green family lines. My great grandmother was Nancy Ann Davis, born in 1845, in GA. She had a brother named Hilburn Davis. Their fathers name was Albert A. Davis and mother was Betty Green. They were both born in GA. I do not know their birth dates, or the county for which they were living. I do know they moved to TN some time after Nancy Ann Davis birth. This is where Nancy married our great grandfather Levi Moses Dove. Shortly after their marriage they moved back to Georgia, where they started their family. Thank you for any information. Marilyn Everett

On September 28, 1864 my gg grandfather, Bennett Smith, and W. (William).G.B. Rogers, gave Alex Murry $1,200.00 for a piece of land in Union County (information taken from a recorded deed). That is ALOT of money in northern Georgia in 1864! Does anyone have further information on this transaction? Thanks, Leslie Martin
Got no info.......but am waiting on my share of the land......LOL LOL Hey did you get those pics I sent yet???????????
I recently received several gedcoms to fill in the blank spaces for our family Thomas tree. However I have some Thomases listed for our line through Aaron the Elder Thomas from the Toe River Valley, Yancey County, North Carolina... that don't seem to fit. One is Pleasant Thomas b. 1804, listed as one of Aaron the Elder Thomas' son. I do not find him in the History of the Toe River Valley. I believe he is the brother of Thomas Calloway Thomas. And that both are from a different Thomas line. Another is Thaddeus Thomas b. 1853 born in Union County, GA. listed as the son of William H. Thomas. Thaddeus is not on any of the census information I have encountered. Next, Monroe Thomas born about 1902, lived a short but productive life. He is featured in the June 1958 issue of National Geographic where he states that this Thomas line originated in Spain as TOMAS through Joe aka Joseph W. Aaron Thomas. He was the father of Aaron the Elder. Monroe's ancestor is John McDaniel "Mac" Thomas, son of "Water" Aaron, son of John (son of Aaron the Elder). Monroe was prolific and wrote about many subjects, especially regarding Public Education in the Mountains. He wrote many poems and at one time someone in the family thought they had been printed up. We recently visited the area and unfortunately none of the local libraries were aware of such writtings. Does anyone with this line know if and where the writtings of Monroe Thomas are? Have they been transcribed? Its one thing to list the names of hundreds of ancestors and descendants in our files, but to have someone's writtings and thoughts is a blessing, for it captures their soul for us to know them. I have several of the handwritten sermons of our direct ancestor Joseph Monroe Thomas, who was a circuit preacher in North Georgia. Postcards to him, thanking him for prayers or asking him for his assistance. Notes he wrote. All give a better glimpse of him - since those staunch pictures tell us he was such a stoic person, we now know otherwise... Leslie
Excuse me Jerry. Going back through my records I see a letter from you stating you descend through Hannah Nicholson, so I'm sure you have spent much time researching her. My records are definitely unorganized. I'll make an annotation that she's yours. So, it appears we are distant cousins through both Nicholson and Pinson lines, but probably not on our Gilberts. Virginia, James Smith was brother to my great grandmother, Sarah E. Smith Jones. In a copy of the 1900 Union County census it lists James' family as: Theadocia wife b. April 1872 Tennie H. June 1883 John B. December 1885 Bertha B. December 1894 Oral L. April 1896 Bonnie E. August 1897 Kansas M. February 1900 Theadocia is apparantly James' second wife James' parents are Bennett Smith and Linna ? (and this is the part where I'm stuck) A Bennett Smith married Eliza Gilwreath in 1891. I think this is Bennett's second wife. Bennett Smith died prior to 1900 and James is mentioned in the probate journal. Living next door to James in 1900 is Eliza Smith, widow, and daughter Cora L., age 11. Again, this is speculation, but I'm guessing this Eliza is James stepmother. I have more on this Smith line if you would like to contact me at [email protected] Leslie Martin
