Hi! List, Last week I got to visit the birthplace of my Grand- father & the place 2 sets of my GGrandparents lived for many years. Gaddistown Dist., Suches, Ga. What a beautiful area. My GGrandparents were Brookshier's & Thomasons's. It is listed that my GGGrandfather, James Brookshier, helped to build & start the "Hill Church" Mt. Pleasant #2. I would like any info on him I can get. Does anyone know if he's buried at this church? Is his wife Nancy Meadows buried there? In the 1850, Union Co. census it lists my GGrand- father Wm. Wright Brookshier living with his Grand- father Thomas Meadows. Thomas Meadows was in his 90's at the time. Does anyone know anything about the Meadows? My Grandfather, Greene Alexander Brookshier, went to school & church in the "Hill Church" until he was 16 years old & the family moved to Mo. leaving behind their Brookshier & Thomason relatives. Forty years later my father took Grandpa Greene back to Suches for a visit. That was probably around 1926/28. My father said they stayed with a cousin that ran the post office. Anyone know who that was? I looked in the Union Co. History Book & there was one womans name it might be. My Grandfather, Greene Alexander Brookshier, was the kindest, caring man. He could grow anything & was well known in Mo. for his wonderful gardens. I have always heard the stories of Gaddistown & Suches & it took me till I was 60 years old to get there. We Missourians tend to go out to Colorado where it's not so hot, but it was not extremely hot & so beautiful in northern Ga. The people were so friendly & helpful. We regret the museum in Blairsville was closed. We were there on a Tues. Beverly Brookshier Sullins, Chilhowee, Mo. [email protected]
Names can be tricky when looking at the indian rolls. Indians often had more than one "indian" name and an anglo name as well. we often know their anglo names and look for them and fail to find them. For instance, Big Witch is Joseph LONG. You will find that on the rolls. You also may want to find the native name for the word you want, such as LONG. Georgia, why do you think it's the JONEs and not LONGs with Cherokee? reason I ask is that there is a record of a James LONG (I think it's in Fannin Co.) where descendants claim he was part CHerokee. If that is true, I don't think it was through Uly CANSLER (her lines are suppose to be all German). Hi Marty, you and I are CALLAHAN cousins. I thought I'd say hi and remind you of that. I also have LONGs from BURKE Co. NC here in Union Co. GA. md. into CANSLER, THOMPSON and LEATHERWOODs. Can you tell me if your MILLERs are from Wilkes Co. region ? there is a group from that area called the "Meat Camp Millers" who I believe I have a descent from. Ie., Nancy MOORE b abt 1805 NC wife of a John MOORE may be a dau. of the MILLERS in that region. If you think Henry is off that line I may have some data for you. Also, there are some CHANDLERs who were cousins to my BRIGGS/REEDER line out of Union co. SC. Do you know if your CHANDLER is from SC ? your cousin, DEBBIE ------Original Message------ From: "Marty Grant" <[email protected]> To: [email protected] Sent: September 3, 2000 7:26:13 PM GMT Subject: Re: [GAUNION] Nancy Gilbert of Union Co., GA Hi all, Check out my web pages for the Gilberts of Union Co, GA. Hello, I am the new County Coordinator for the Lumpkin County GAGenWeb site. I have uploaded a revised version of the Lumpkin County website. Please visit and let me know if you have any comments or suggestions, or if you find any problems. You will find a new layout, as well as some new links and new data files. I have tested this on Netscape 4.75 and MS Internet Explorer 5.0 using the following settings: 800 X 600, 256 color, large font & small font 1024 X 768, 256 color, large font & small font 1024 X 768, true color, large font & small font It seems to work fine under this broad range of settings, but if you have any problems viewing it with your configuration and browser, please let me know. The only minor problem I experienced is a difference in the way Netscape and Internet Explorer display the table widths, which effects the relative widths of the right half and left half. This difference forced me to make a compromise between the two until I figure out how to correct it. Hope you enjoy the site, Dan Pierce Lumpkin County Coordinator

Hello everyone on my Email Lists, We need to get the word out about a relatively new website that is charging researchers for data that's normally 'free of charge'. http://www.familydiscovery.com/ BEFORE anyone signs up and pays to have access to 'their databases'...consider this: It appears that they are merely linking back to copyrighted personal websites with raw data and not all of them are really their own databases. Their method is completely opposite of what you will find at the very reputable website, ancestry.com, for example. They are marketing it as a 'convenience' service to genealogy researchers. Some of their information is found 'free of charge' elsewhere on the internet. Whether this practice is lawful or not really isn't the issue....is it ethical? I have alerted the owners of personal websites that I recognized on their 'what's new' webpage so they can pursue whatever avenue they want to. One person I heard about, signed up and still hasn't received their 'login' info after several weeks and efforts to contact the site owners were fruitless because of bogus addresses and telephone numbers, so they alerted their local police. Both RootsWeb and USGenWeb management teams are aware of this situation. Both yesterday and today, there has been email discussion on our Georgia county coordinator email list about this very sad situation... I just hate to see people pay for something they don't have to; but all I can do is make you aware of it..then you are on your own....
