I suspect Samuel Pate to be her father but haven't found any proof. I believe the Martha M Pate listed on the 1850 Twiggs Co. Census with the family of Elizabeth Pate is the right one. The ages and genders of some of the children match those of Samuel Pate on the 1840 Twiggs Census. On the 1850 Census a few names away is the family of Henry Wood and Matilda Brooks. Their son William Jennings Wood (1837/8-1912) married Martha Pate. Back to the question of Samuel Pate, in the Nov. 22, 1848 and the Dec. 20, 1848 editions of the Ga. Journal and Messenger, there are ads for the sale of property belonging to Samuel Pate of Twiggs Co, deceased, for the benefit of his heirs and creditors. I have seen hints of The Rev. William Pate and wife Susan Fort being the parents of Samuel Pate but have nothing solid. I would be happy to exchange info on Pate and Wood families, or others, and would be most grateful on anything heplful about the grav! e of Martha Pate Wood. I believe she is in The Sapp Family Cemetery in Wilkinson Co. but I can not find the cemetery in the woods by Clear Creek Church and have seen no published info. thanks, Katie
