Dear Cecil; I checked the 1805 Wilkinson County Districts that become Twiggs County in 1809 and there are no Cloud families in the area. I work a 24 hour shift tomorrow, but will go to the library on Wednesday to try and get more marriage records out of Newspaper articles and will look for your Jeremiah Cloud in anything there. If the part of Twiggs where he was from became Bibb County later, then there could be some records there. Do you know if he owned any land? I will keep my eyes open for you and thank you for the email. Is anyone on this list searching the families of Brady, Hawkins, and McCarty from abt. 1780 to abt. 1830? Thank you Cyndi Hulett
All right folks! Out of 65 people on the Twiggs Mailing List, only three responded to my request for marriages. (And let me take this time to say THANK YOU to those three, I really do appreciate your support!) What about the other 62 people? I can not do this alone!!!!!! The Twiggs County list is such a friendly one. If you've never written an e-mail to a mailing list or shared anything, this is a wonderful list to work with. Everyone is willing to help you ...and there is no "wrong" way to write an e-mail. Even if you don't type very well, we don't mind typos at all. The main thing is to at least attempt to share what you have. I know that you all are checking the Twiggs site for updates, I have seen the counter go up by 400 visitors in just a few weeks. Why won't you share? I don't mean to offend anyone, and if I have then I am sorry, but this can not be a one person operation. I have put hours and hours into trying to get information online. What is probably at your fingertips I have spent time at the library getting (and then had to pay for it!) I have about 400 marriages in this database so far. I would like to get much more before putting it online. For those of you that do not know me, I do live in Twiggs County. I also work full time as an EMT. I normally work 72 hours per week. I have three children; ages 17, 15 and 9. I also volunteer as a Rescue Member and Fire Department Member for Twiggs County. As you can see I stay pretty busy too so that is no excuse for not taking five minutes to send me your information. Tonya, I applaud you for your dedication! But, I fear that I cannot add much. My distant cousin, Tom Cloud, told you about our ancestor Jeremiah Cloud, who married Elizabeth in 1800. He said he was born in Twiggs County, GA. He was 77 years old and fairly prosperous when he died in TX in 1861. Our best guess is that they married in the Twiggs County area but that was before the county was formed. The fact that Twiggs County did not exist when Jeremiah was born has caused some to suggest that he was not actually born in the county. What is important to me is that Twiggs County did exist when he left the area for AL in about 1825. If his mother told him accurately about his place of birth and that place was a part of Twiggs County in 1825 I feel sure he would have said quite honestly that he was born in Twiggs County. That's the way we speak today, and I have no reason to think customs on this have changed. Jeremiah's place of birth may have later become a part of Bibb County, but he may never have known about that. I spent a little time in the area last summer trying to gather clues as to what was going on there in 1784. I came away with the suspicion that Jeremiah's mother was either a refugee from the war or a Creek Indian. Any ideas? Hello All, Because so many of our Twiggs famillies are intertwined with Jones county families, I thought that I would post this Obit. It was posted on the Jones County list this morning. Carolyn White Williams, author of History of Jones County, Georgia 1807-1907, died during the night. She was 103. Services are tentatively set for Tuesday, April 23, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. Simpson-Childs Funeral Home in Gray has charge of services. pat

While looking through my files, I also see that I have some Twiggs people that married in Bibb and Jones counties. I wonder if it would benefit anyone to know that information on those people? Maybe we could do a list for Twiggs people married In Bibb and Twiggs people married in Jones also in the future. Might be helpful for some. Just a thought. pat

Tonya, Here's a couple for your list: 1. Gideon A. Allen married Mary Ann Horn(e) in 1828 in Twiggs County, GA. The source of this information comes from Mary Horn Allen's obituarary in the 26 January 1899 issue of The Bossier Banner seen at the Bossier Parish Library in Benton, Louisiana. 2. Joab Horn(e) married Isabella Davidson on 4/11/1843. This was his second marriage. I believe the union occurred in Twiggs County because Joab lived there as he appears on the 1840 census as having land. Source of this information comes from the Census Records and the book "Twiggs County Georgia Record: A Reconstructed Heritage", by Bess Vaughn Clark. 3. Arthur B. Horne married Mary H. Stanley on 9/23/1833. Not 100% sure if this occured in Twiggs County. Source of information was the book mentioned above. -Cary Allen allensofmarietta@earthlink.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Tonya Crosby" <thcrosby@bellsouth.net> To: <GATWIGGS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, April 19, 2002 4:44 PM Subject: [GATWIGGS] Marriages > Dear list subscribers; > > I am starting a new database and will work on getting this online as soon as possible, but it can only be successful with your help. > > Since the courthouse burned in 1901, there are no marriage records for Twiggs County before that time. Josiah D. Evans & Idella Crosby abt 1883 Twiggs County Rubin Andrew Vann & Mary Ann Mariah Evans December 21, 1865 Twiggs County Ga. Do we just want the definitely twiggs or the VERY VERY good possibilities? I have alot that could have been married in twiggs but as we all know they could have very well gone into Bibb county for marriage licenses. pat

Dear list subscribers; I am starting a new database and will work on getting this online as soon as possible, but it can only be successful with your help. Since the courthouse burned in 1901, there are no marriage records for Twiggs County before that time. I am working on re-creating these marriages. I have started looking through old newspapers and books to get this database started. Gaila has sent me some marriages off of Ancestry.com and that is what has given me the idea to do this. I know that in some cases we will not be able to know the exact date the marriage took place. (But the month or just the year will be better than nothing!!!) Aren't you tired of being stuck with just a first name of a wife and no maiden name? What I need for each of you to do is to get out your family bibles and your family files and sent me a listing of who married who in Twiggs County before 1901. I will include a source to let everyone know where the information came from, but if you do not want your name mentioned, then I will just say "Personal Family File". Looking forward to hearing from each of you. Tonya www.geocities.com/thcrosby
Does anyone know where in NC many of the early settlers in Twiggs Co. (prior to 1830) came from? I am having no luck in finding parents for Gideon Allen who married Mary Horne. They were on the 1830 Twiggs census and a good many of their children were born in Twiggs. About 1845, they moved to NW LA (Bossier Par) along with other Twiggs citizens. On later census, Gideon states he was born in NC. Thanks for your help. Gail
