Her father was Joseph Delespine, a French surgeon, who came with the Squadrone under County D'Estaing in the time of the Revolution. He remained in Charleston three years after the birth of my mother, and moved to Norfolk, Virginia. From thence to New York city, where he remained several years and then made a visit to his parents who lived previous to the insurrection at Cape Francois, on the Island of St. Domingo. During his absence her mother accompanied her brother, John Russel, to Nassau, New Province, and was met by her husband on his return from St. Domingo. The family remained at Nassau till 1790, and moved to St. Salvador, where her father died. In the year 1795 she was sent to New York to be educated and married Edward Munro in the year 1797. Mrs. Martha J. Benford, the subject of this notice, was born February 29, 1816. She died November 21, 1900 after several weeks of intense suffering. She joined the Missionary Baptist Church in Twiggs County, Georgia, at Antioch and was baptised by Brother Charnie Tharp on August 18, 1851 and afterwards united with the church at Bethesda, Carrol County, Georgia. In the death of our sister the church loses one of her oldest and best members. While we feel that Heaven has been made richer by our loss, as she expressed perfect resignation and willingness to go, we shall miss her quiet, sweet face and loving words as she often told us she was going home to Jesus, to that good place that she had seen. She died singing sweet songs of praise to our Maker. We feel loth to lose her, and can only say His will be done. Committee (Mrs. Fannie Barnes) (Mrs. M. F. Bell) (Miss Etta Warren) Done by order of the church. J. T. Layton, Moderator A. G. Owensby, Clerk
I, too, am related to this line. Gideon "Gid" O'Neal was my great grandfather. O'Neal connection scan get very confusing, so I will clear up one fact here. Gideon was the nephew of Van Horne by his wife Sarah O'Neal. However, his father was her brother William, not David Allen Oneal, Sr. Therefore, Gid and David, Jr. were first cousins. With my any name repetitions, it does get a bit confusing at times. I will also be glad to see any new info concerning. Documentation is definitely welcome to help remove some the uncertain info we have now. Jennifer Sherwood Braswell
If you are in Marietta, GA the Georgia Archives isn't far from you and would probably have the book you refer to and also may have the original passports. I will look at our Washington Library Genealogy Archives on my next visit there and see if I can find the book and let you know if I do. I show a Winifred HORNE marrying a WARD boy from Duplin, probably in Edgefield, since that was where she was from. However, I know the Robert ALLEN III family was real big just across the river in Augusta in the early 1800's.and they were from Hanover County, VA. They were tied in with a bunch of NC folks, though, mostly from Craven and that area. The MELTONS (from Orange County, NC), ANDERSONS, CALHOUNS, WALKERS and COLLINS were tied to this family. There was an earlier marriage of a John ALLEN to Sarah WOODSON (b. about 1700) and some of the WOODSONS and their relations came down into NC -- Granville and Wake to name a few. I think all of these families go back to Southside. The given name, Green, is definitely a VA name, usually. Hope this helps. John R. Prior to early 1800's passports were issued for families traveling through Creek Indian territory to places to and from what became Twiggs County. Can anyone on this list direct me to the following reference, "Passports of southeastern pioneers 1770-1823: Indian, Spanish, and other land passports for Tennessee,Kentucky,Georgia,Mississippi,Virginia, North and South Carolina" by Dorothy Williams Potter, 1982 Gateway Press. Or better yet, anyone with access to this reference that can do a lookup for me? I am searching for families of John Allen (or maybe his sons Gideon, Green, or William Allen) and Abisha Horn(e) (or maybe his son Joab Horne). All believed to have come to Twiggs from NC during the early 1800's. Quite possibly prior to the formation of Twiggs in 1809. Any help or suggestions on the use of this reference would be helpful. -Cary Allen allensofmarietta@earthlink.net
Terri, Interesting although I'm not sure what to make of the information you've shared. My GrGrGrGrGrandfather was Gideon Allen. Both names show up in your O'Neal family. Perhaps a connection or strong ties. I have no marriage records of an Allen or Horn marrying into the O'Neal family, although I don't rule it out due to incomplete spousal information. I show a Sarah Horn as a sister to my Gideon Allen's wife, Mary. However this Sarah Horn was both in 1816 not 1825. Mary also had a brother William, but he was born in 1798. Also, I have verified that this family came from Edgecombe County NC independently of Bess Vaughn Clark's reference. No Horns present in Johnson County that I've been able to see. -Cary Allen allensofmarietta@earthlink.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Terri Lee Wolfe" <terrilee@ipa.net> To: <GATWIGGS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, April 24, 2002 4:03 PM Subject: Re: [GATWIGGS] Horn/O'Neal > At 12:17 AM 4/23/02 -0400, you wrote: > >Betty, > > > >I have little additional information on the Horne family directly. At 12:17 AM 4/23/02 -0400, you wrote: >Betty, > >I have little additional information on the Horne family directly. Most of >what I know originated with Bess Vaughn Clark's book. I too would like to My Sarah Elizabeth Horne married David Allen O'Neal/Oneil. She was born in 1825 and he in 1826. He was the son of Theophilus and Martha Culpepper O'Neal and they were married somewhere in Laurens Co. In 1850 David and Sarah were living next door to Theophilus and Martha. William and Elizabeth ? Horne were nearby. William Horn was b in NC in 1795. We believe it was Johnson Co. I have always wondered if there were an Allen connection as this was the middle name. D.A. had a son D.A. (Crocket) Jr. O'neal, who remained in Crawford and MOnroe Co. on the line. A lot of O'Neals are in Roberta, and a few are left in Forsythe. They are the same. Do you have a record of any Horne ever marrying an Oneal because David had a brother named Gideon O'NEal. The coincidence seems really too much not to have some connection. My D. A. and Sarah Horne O'Neal moved on to AR where her brother Alford already was. Wm. came with them in the l870's. In 1860 he was in Crawford Co. with Susan Chancelor and Cloughy chancelor who both married the same Wm. Chancelor when the first sister died. Gideon O'Neal and David Allen O'neal Jr. are both mentioned in a will of Vanburen Horne's (whose wife was an O'Neal). They were listed as nephews in Crawford co. I would really be interested to know if this connects to anyone as Twiggs is not too far from this area. Beth Thurman terrilee@ipa.net

Thank you for sending this obit. While I cannot identify with the White's there are also Parkers in her family and I would be interested in them. But, foremost, is the Rev. John Haney. My very biggest brick wall is my GGgrandmother Edith Haney White.(aka Eda/Ada) February 07, 1841 she married E. A. White in Thomas Co. Ga. and that is absolutely all I know about her. There was a John Haney on the 1830 census of Thomas Co., but he had two males in the household. Is there anyone on this list researching Haney that might know anything at all about My GGgrandmother. Houston County, Georgia land deeds contain the names of sellers and purchasers from Twiggs County. Central Georgia Genealogy Society has the deeds on CD rom and I will name the person date and Lot details. If you find someone, you are interested in you will be able to look up the land deed for further information. We will be able to determine who lived in Twiggs County, Ga in time frames from the deeds. I will be doing this as an ongoing project for Twiggs County. All named will be from Twiggs County, unless otherwise stated. some of the deeds are nominated as having been filed in Twiggs County, as opposed to Houston but registered in Houston County, I will note those deeds. There are Brady connections to my Hatcher and Hancock lines, but they were in Warren Co. until after 1800 when they came into Wilkinson Co. Mary Brady m. Major John Hatcher. We think she was the daughter of Patrick and Delilah Brady (Richmond & Warren Co.) Samuel Brady, Mary's brother, had a daughter (also Mary) who married Joseph Hancock in Warren Co. Joseph Hancock's parents were Clement and Mary Renfroe Hancock of Warren Co. The Brady, Hatcher and Hancock families all moved into Wilkinson Co. around 1810. ----- Original Message ----- From: Cyndi Hulett <cjhulett@earthlink.net> To: <GATWIGGS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, April 22, 2002 6:30 PM Subject: [GATWIGGS] Brady/Hawkins/McCarty > Is anyone on this list searching the families of Brady, Hawkins, and McCarty from abt. 1780 to abt. 1830? > > > Thank you > Cyndi Hulett > > > ==== GATWIGGS Mailing List ==== > Post your Deeds for Twiggs County > http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Ga/TwiggsDeed > > > ============================== > To join Ancestry.com and access our 1.2 billion online genealogy records, go to: > http://www.ancestry.com/rd/redir.asp?targetid=571&sourceid=1237 > >
Betty, I have little additional information on the Horne family directly. Most of what I know originated with Bess Vaughn Clark's book. I too would like to understand where they went after leaving the Marion area. My direct line, Gideon Allen, left Marion in February of 1845 and relocated to Louisiana. He had quite a bit of property in Twiggs according to the 1840 census. I'm interested in how he acquired the property and who he sold that property to along with the Horns. Neither family received any draws from the Land Lottery the best I've been able to determine. While I'm on the topic, Gideon Allen is my dead end. I believe his father was John Allen who shows up on the census in Twiggs in 1830 and other records indicate that he was in Twiggs County as early as 1821. Age and location to other Allen's living next to one another including Gideon Allen all fit into one neat family unit. I have seen the records of the Richland Baptist Church and have been able to establish that Gideon and his brother Green Allen left the church (with a Letter of Dismissal" in preparation for their move in Nov of 1844. Gideon turns up again in Bossier Parish, LA in Feb. 1845. Not sure what happened to Green Allen. I've lost him in the move. Not sure where John Allen came from. Believe it was NC. Not sure when he came to Twiggs, but believe it was before 1821. Have records of the Horns in Twiggs as early as 1813. I know that they came from Edgecomb County, NC. Perhaps the Allens did as well, however I have not found any evidence that this was the case. Sorry for the rambling email. If ANYONE on the list has ANY information on John Allen, Gideon Allen, or the Horn family, I would be very grateful in communicating with you to share information on these families. Thanks in advance, Cary Allen allensofmarietta@earthlink.net ----- Original Message ----- From: "Betty Bivins" <halbet@cybersouth.com> To: <GATWIGGS-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, April 21, 2002 9:40 PM Subject: Re: [GATWIGGS] Marriages > This is a multi-part message in MIME format. > --------------55CB31600C6D9AEC97FC26AD > Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii > Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit > > Cary Allen, > IF you have any other info regarding this Horne family, would you please share with > me? I am on the list, but, absolutely have no marriages from Twiggs County. I imagine several of us would have family that were passing thru that married in SC came to Twiggs and then went on to Ala.
