Cecil, Thanks for puttig that article on the Twiggs Co. Ga. Mail List. It refers to Marion, Ga. in Twiggs County. Marion is where my GGG-Grandfather, George Remer YOUNG and his wife, Mary Ann GILLEY were in 1830-1849. I am always looking for any mention of Marion, Georgia in Twiggs County. THANKS !! Kay

Hi, I understand there was a Thames Militia Distrist in Twiggs Co maybe during the 1813-1820 time frame. Does anyone know what the first name of the Thames person in the District name was? It might have been Thomas Thames District? Paul thames

Unfortunately we don't have a first name listed for him....BUT his men were listed as "from Jones Co"....so I would tend to think that this Humphries was from Jones County. If anyone is researching a Humphries that might have served in the War of 1812, maybe they can help us out. It's not often that a "jewel" comes along like this one!! If you recognize any names, let us hear from you.... Mona has just shared with us a wonderful newspaper clipping about "alleged deserters".....be sure to read the ending as they speak their piece! I'm trying to get more things on-line for the War of 1812.... we have a number of pensions....we're working on some roster listings. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/military.htm Mona Lowe monaplowe@yahoo.com Georgia Table of Contents: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm Georgia Journal Aug. 26, 1812 Transcribed by Mona Lowe from microfilm at Washington Memorial Library, Macon Deserters The following Volunteers in the service of the United States have deserted from the detachment under my command. In the first place, I turned out as a Volunteer with others of my fellow citizens, for the express purpose of joining the other companies that were to march to East Florida, I accordingly went with a party from Clinton, commanded by Major Humphries with a full determination to render service to my country. Accordingly we arrived at our rendezvous, where we remained for twelve days doing nothing; I soon became heartily sick of idleness, which of all things to me is most disagreeable, especially in a place like Point Petre, presenting no resources to a man whose mind is not employed. This, together with the unofficerlike conduct of our commander Humphries, so disgusted me that I was resolved to return home when the time I was to serve should expire,. I had not long fixed on this determination before I heard that the President of the United States gave orders that no attack should be made on East Florida; in consequence of which, Governor Mitchell said he could not feel willing to receive us, unless we would Volunteer for two months longer. This I was not willing to do, unless I could be allowed to join Capt. Howard's or Capt. Fort's company from Baldwin county. To which, objections being made, I followed by first resolution and returned to Clinton, half-starved and pennyless. I shall take good care in future, never to go with such commanders as Newnan or Humphries. I hope my fellow citizens will see from the above statement, that I have obeyed the laws of my country strictly. JOHN C. SPINKS Clinton, August 22, 1812 WE certify the foregoing is a true statement, and that we also left Point Petre for the same reasons. Their children were Mary Rebecca Sanders, John Wesley, James died young, Henry Franklin, Elizabeth MacLeod, Frances A. H. MacLeod, William Lazarus, Sarah I think she married a William Pitt, Susan M. for some reason she was called Aunt Puss or Purr she never married, Dr. Thomas Carey. Can anyone give me information on Rebecca STURDIVANT. Le
I am seeking information on the family of James LAND and Lucretia FAULK. James was the eldest son of John LAND Jr. and Delilah SOLOMON who married in 1805. They resided first in Marion then in Jeffersonville. Lucretia was the daughter of Mark FAULK Sr. and Nancy REYNOLDS. Hi Tanya, my name is paul thames and although my ancestors, (Amos Thames who m Elizabeth Plummer in Cumberland co NC in Jan 1807) lived in Twiggs Co for a time, I know of no marriages of any relatives that took place there. Amos Tims/Thames was listed in the 1820 census in Jones Co, He was in Twiggs Co when he drew land through the lottery for land in Early Co in the 1820 lottery. I believe this family lived in Twiggs Co for several years however. Other family members who also lived there are William, Samuel, Thomas Thames. Several children of Amos and Elizabeth were born in Twiggs Co, I believe, no proof however. They were quite religious and attended church regularly there I believe at the Stone Creek Baptist church. And probably had an account at the Peck Store. I have been unable to get much info though to document their stay in Twiggs Co. I visited once in the County Court House and very little data is available. I subscribe to the Twiggs List in hopes of some day getting some info on my family ancestors. I believe my ancestors left NC in about 1810-12 and arrived in Ga about that time. Amos was in the revolutionary War and died in Clay Co Ga in 1855. Would appreciate any and all help. I also appreciate all that you do and the efforts you make to help gain new info on the early settlers of Twiggs and counties of that vicinity. Paul Thames
Pam, I had a look to see if Jacob Watts was mentioned in Houston County deeds, but he wasn't that I could see. Since Twiggs is a burned county, you might not find as much general information about the family. Try the Tax lists and check the counties around Twiggs to see if he had any dealings in those counties. Tonya, I am one of those members who do not share anything because I have so little to share. I am hoping someone will have something on my ancestors,Jacob and Millie Hollingsworth WATTS who lived there for a while. I know they were received by letter (2/27/1813) into the Stone Creek Baptist Church. I also know that he was cited for intoxication 9/21/1821; and, on 10/27/1821 he was excommunicated. He was received by restoration 9/26/1829, but on 11/21/1829, he was charged with the same problem. He was excommunicated the second time on 2/27/1830. I think that if they were in the church from 1813 to 1830, there should be some kind of record for them somewhere because they must have done something that would have required a legal record. Seventeen years is a long time to live in the same county without leaving some evidence they were there. However, I live too far away to search the records for them. He died in Talladega Co.,AL in 1850 where he lived on land he received in 1839. I live about a mile from where he lived when he died. Pam
Tonya, I do appreciate your efforts for this list. Currently, I do not have any information to contribute but I do have a question. Out of 65 people on the Twiggs Mailing List, only three responded to my request for marriages. (And let me take this time to say THANK YOU to those three, I really do appreciate your support!) What about the other 62 people? I can not do this alone!!!!!! The Twiggs County list is such a friendly one. If you've never written an e-mail to a mailing list or shared anything, this is a wonderful list to work with. Everyone is willing to help you ...and there is no "wrong" way to write an e-mail. Even if you don't type very well, we don't mind typos at all. The main thing is to at least attempt to share what you have. I know that you all are checking the Twiggs site for updates, I have seen the counter go up by 400 visitors in just a few weeks. Why won't you share? I don't mean to offend anyone, and if I have then I am sorry, but this can not be a one person operation. I have put hours and hours into trying to get information online. What is probably at your fingertips I have spent time at the library getting (and then had to pay for it!) I have about 400 marriages in this database so far. I would like to get much more before putting it online. For those of you that do not know me, I do live in Twiggs County. I also work full time as an EMT. I normally work 72 hours per week. I have three children; ages 17, 15 and 9. I also volunteer as a Rescue Member and Fire Department Member for Twiggs County. As you can see I stay pretty busy too so that is no excuse for not taking five minutes to send me your information. Now......START SHARING!!!!!!
