    1. [GATWIGGS] New files - 8 Sept
    2. Crilley
    3. People sometimes write to me asking, "Why aren't there ever any new files for XXX county?" We are dependent on people just like YOU, to send us what they have researched. If nothing is being posted, then we need you to work with the County List to try to get people to share their information. William J Wood and his wife, Martha Pate, are on the 1860 Wilkinson Co. census in the Irwinton Dist. They had five children that lived to adulthood; Benjamin F, Andrew J, Ella, Julia and Millie Ann. Martha Pate died in 1873. WJ then married Clarissa Horton Brown (aka Claracy) and they had no children. WJ and Claracy are on the 1880 Wilkinson Co. census and they are buried at New Bethal Cemetery, Laurens Co. I'll let you know if I find any new Samuel Pate info. Thanks again. Katie

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5d.2ADE/84.117.121.1 Message Board Post: Thanks for the reply. The Elizabeth Pate on the 1850 Twiggs is proven to be the widow of the Samuel Pate who died in Twiggs bef. 25 July 1848. The newspaper notices you mention and others in the Union Recorder (beginning 25 July 1848) & Macon Messenger, along with Twiggs Co GA Tax Digest Records and some deeds re-recorded after 1900 establish this wife and children. Family histories [proof not listed in them] state that Samuel Pate was married prior to this wife, and had other children. Census records substantiate this. I am a descendant of one of these other children, Stephen S Pate, who moved on to Randolph Co GA. These old family & county histories state that Martha M Pate married a Wood. I had thought it likely that Martha met & married a neighbor since several families were nearby with children of the right age. Where did your William Jennings Wood & Martha live on the 1860 & later census records? Do you know when they married and when she died? I do not know anything about the Sapp Family Cemetery. Thanks again for replying. Lindy

    2. Allens Family
    3. I was browsing through the re-recorded deeds on the Twiggs County Web Site at http:www.rootsweb.com/~gatwiggs. and came across the following record of a property sale from John W Allen in 1845. I have long suspected him to be a brother of Gideon Allen and the son of John Allen. The date of the sale in February 1845 is around the same timeframe that Gideon Allen and family left the area to make their way to Louisiana. Both Gideon and Green Allen resigned their church membership at the Richland Baptist Church shortly before this, and left Twiggs in February 1845. This may be further evidence that John W. Allen, Green Allen, and Gideon Allen were brothers and they all left Twiggs County at the same time, possibly together. Grantee: Williams Sarah Grantor: Allen John W. Type: WD Date: 02/07/1845 Book: A Page: 401 Does anyone on this list have further information about this transaction or information on John W. Allen? What does WD mean in the Type field on the transcribed deed recording? -Cary Allen allensofmarietta@earthlink.net

Surnames: Pate, Wood, Holland, Epps, Ryle, Collins, Busby, Cowart, Tindol, Brooks, Fort Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5d.2ADE/84.117.121 Message Board Post: I am researching the Martha Pate you mention. I suspect Samuel Pate to be her father but haven't found any proof. I believe the Martha M Pate listed on the 1850 Twiggs Co. Census with the family of Elizabeth Pate is the right one. The ages and genders of some of the children match those of Samuel Pate on the 1840 Twiggs Census. On the 1850 Census a few names away is the family of Henry Wood and Matilda Brooks. Their son William Jennings Wood (1837/8-1912) married Martha Pate. Back to the question of Samuel Pate, in the Nov. 22, 1848 and the Dec. 20, 1848 editions of the Ga. Journal and Messenger, there are ads for the sale of property belonging to Samuel Pate of Twiggs Co, deceased, for the benefit of his heirs and creditors. I have seen hints of The Rev. William Pate and wife Susan Fort being the parents of Samuel Pate but have nothing solid. I would be happy to exchange info on Pate and Wood families, or others, and would be most grateful on anything heplful about the grav! e of Martha Pate Wood. I believe she is in The Sapp Family Cemetery in Wilkinson Co. but I can not find the cemetery in the woods by Clear Creek Church and have seen no published info. thanks, Katie

    1. [GATWIGGS] 1830 Houston County Census - Thanks Terre Walker
    2. Jim & Gaila
    3. With Gratitude and a great deal of excitement, I would like to say that the 1830 Census is available online at the Houston County Webpage. http://www.rootsweb.com/~gahousto/ Terre Moody Walker has over the past several months been working on transcribing the 1830 Census and has made it available to Houston County Researcher's online. This is a brilliant effort on her part and I would like to thank her on our behalf. Terre grew up in Houston County and has a sustaining love of place, for Perry and Houston County. Houston County researchers reap the benefits of this, as we can now search through the Census of 1830, as well as her information on Civil War Regiments from Houston County and even a PostCard tour of Old Perry. The Links are there from the Houston County web page. Thanks to Terre for her splendid efforts on our behalf. Terre you are a real Georgia Peach. Thanks to Randall Walker for his proof-reading. Houston County researchers appreciate your efforts, Best Regards, Gaila Merrington Houston County Web Mistress PS This is a large Excel Spreadsheet and it will take a while to download. To find a name, use Control F type in the name and then hit Find next. This will take you to First and Last names but it is the quickest way to find the names you are researching.
