    1. Re: [GATWIGGS] OLD STONE CREEK CEMETERY- Circa 1800
    2. The original Old Stone Creek Church and Cemetery was about 2 miles from the second one. From what I have found out it is near the Bibb County and Twigg County line on a river called "Stone Creek" You can look it up on Mapquest, That is how I found it. 2. Hi Wayne; I live in California and it would be impossible for me to physically help in this worthwhile effort, but I would be very willing to financially help. I thought this was a tragity to let this cemetery get to this point and have been trying to rally the people who have relatives buried there as I do. My GGGGrandfather John H Powell who fought in the American Revolution is buried there. 3. I understand. How many others have expressed an interest? So that those who are interested get feeling of connectedness, may I suggest that you put together a list and share it with all. I know that if I am the only one in the local area to the cemetery, that it would be impossible to do by myself. It might also be a good idea to create some sort of web site or newsgroup to get all interested together. --- SamsPAD@attbi.com wrote: > Hi Wayne; > I live in California and it would be impossible for > me to physically help in > this worthwhile effort, but I would be very willing > to financially help. 3. May I suggest that a date and time be set to go to the old cemetery and a site assessment be made. I have visited the site (about 2 years ago)and it was very grown up, and the only headstone that I found was down and broken. Hopefully, there are others under the dense undergrowth. The only trees in the cemetery was new growth that has occurred since the trees in the area was cut sometime prior to my visit. This will be a big effort but I feel will be a very satisfying one when complete. Assuming the date and time is when I will be available, I will be glad to help out. I work normal working hours so a weekend day is best for me. Please keep us informed. 3. I'm trying to find connections to my father's family. His great-uncle Ollie and grandfather William J were born in 1874 and 1877 in Bibb Co. to Jennie ANDREWS and (unknown) LaVARRE. LaVARRE died by 1880, leaving Jennie widowed. She was living on a farm in Bibb Co. with a family BIRDSONG in the 1880 census, and it notes that the boys' father was Georgia-born. I have found Robert J. LaVARRE, private in Faulk's Invincibles in the CSA but he was killed in service between 1862 and 1865. I have found "Lavar" families in the 1830 and 1840 Twiggs Census, but only in the 1860 Mitchell Co. census, not Twiggs or Bibb. The Lavar families I found were 1)Mary Lavar and 2)David Lavar. If anyone has any connections to these families, I hope we can connect. I lose Jennie and Ollie again after 1880(although I know she remarried an Alex (Sandy) McGregor in 1883) , but I have William's wife and children later on. If anyone has access to an 1860 census, I'd appreciate a look-up if it's indexed. Anyone have other ideas? Christina Auch mailto:theauchs@earthlink.net Georgia names- STEAD~LaVARRE ~ANDREWS~WHITE

    2. Hi Barbara, I am a descendant of the Henry(William Henry) Stokes and Berthany (Forehand) which you mentioned in your message. They were from Pulaski Co. GA with Henry being born in SC. I checked their family and found that they had a son named James Franklin b. Oct 1848, but not a James Edwin. The first name and dob are the same as yours, but I don't think they are the same. There was another Henry Stokes in Twiggs Co. during that time, I believe. Maybe your James is his son. I might have some information on him, but do not have access to it at this time. I'll be happy to get back with you on it. Barbara S.

    3. I have visited the old Stone Creek Baptist Church cemetery and I found it to be as was described below. In fact I could find only one broken headstone there. I had talked with the pastor of the church some time ago and he said that loggers cutting trees in the area ran over the cemetery with their heavy equipment. Apparently this was because it was so overgrown that they could not see the headstones which were likely fallen over when this occurred. Wayne Bowden Gray, Ga --- "James O.
