    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Paul Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5d.2ADE/209.1 Message Board Post: Hello, Betty...Please note my new email address...James Ware, Mary Mims, Robert Paul and Marie Ware are all buried together at Old Richland Baptist Church Cemetery in Twiggs Co., GA. There is a marker there which lists all four. The marriage information on Robert & Marie came from a photocopy of the Paul Family Bible in the Washington Memorial Library in Macon (very poor photocopy...very illegible). Robert was my direct descendant's brother; the brother's name was John William Paul (1829-1909) and he also lived in the Bluff District of Twiggs Co., GA. Both brothers descended from William Paul (1783, Caswell Co., NC-1860, Jones Co., GA). The family was originally from Caswell Co., NC (late 1700's...that's where my research stops), migrated to Lincoln Co., GA about 1800 and then on to Jones Co., GA about or before 1810. I have a lot of information on various Paul's and only a little on some. Let me know which ones you are interest in and I will let you know if I have an! ything worthwhile....Good to hear from you...Regards, Richard Paul Silva

Please if you have any information on any of these members --- let us know. We're also working on getting the Cemetery transcribed. It is a large one! This is one of the churches involved in the "split" --- Primitive and Missionary Baptist churches Lindy Hard shared this on the GEORGIA-L list....so wanted everyone on this list to see it as well: Source: "History of the Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Association (of Georgia) 1814-1964; Jones 1965. p19 "The churches of the Ebenezer Baptist Association first met at Cool Springs Meetinghouse (now anti-missionary or Primitive Baptist) Wilkinson County, Georgia (hence removed to Twiggs County, Georgia) on Saturday before the first Sabbath in March, 1814 for the purpose of organizing the Baptist churches lying in the forks of the Oconee and Ocmulge Rivers into a Baptist Association." ... "first regular Association session was held at Mount Moriah Meetinhouse in Twiggs county August 1814... Churches dismissed from the Hephzibah Association to form the Ebenezer Associations were: Rocky Creek, Laurens County, Whitehead's Meetinghouse, Laurens County; Big Sandy, Wilkinson county; Cool Springs, Wilkinson County; Poplar Springs, Laurens County; Sugar Creek, Pulaski County; and Mount Horeb, Pulaski County... " [other churches were dismissed from the Ocmulgee Association to join the Ebenezer Association] ... "First District- Richland Creek, Mount Moriah, Trail Branch, and Cool Springs..." Source: History of The Ebenezer Associaiton of Missionary Baptists in Middle Georgia, Walter M Lee, [date unknown] p4 "Rev. David Smith was pastor at Ramah in 1835. He was a member of Cool Springs for a long time. He was quite an able preacher, having several churches in the association"... p5... "The division of the missionaries and the anti-missionaries occurred at Bethsheba church in Twiggs County, Sept. 24th, 1836" Source: History of Wilkinson County [Georgia], Davidson 1930, reprinted 1997 p379 RE: 24th session of the Ebenezer Association held at Beersheba, Twiggs County Sept 24 1836... 3. Max, When I read the Fellowship Church membership records, the phrase they used was "dismissed by letter". The letter would be produced by that person in their new community church and be accepted "by letter". If someone was expelled, it might give a reason, for drinking or for swearing or sometimes because the beliefs of the Church and the individual didn't mesh. Gaila > I was excited to see my great grandmother listed on this list as "Mrs. > Mary Benford (dismissed)." Although I wonder why she was dismissed. She > was Mrs. Robert Meroland (Maryland) Benford. 3. What I have so far on Cool Springs Cemetery: I hope that someone else will see what we're working on and suggest some other names.... as you see if there is no tombstone, then I just mark it that way..... and a probable burial will stay probable until we have some better proof. My guess is that many of those listed on the Membership rolls may also be buried here..... Mary Elizabeth Jane Lee Apr 4, 1834 - July 1, 1879 1st wife of Richmond Lamb Died in Civil War 1863 1st wife of Henry Howell Married Feb 8, 1865 Twiggs Co GA Dock Arnold CSA marker (no dates) (husband of Catherine Grimsley) Anderson's Batt'n, GA Light Artillery (Anderson's Battery) 14th Batt'n, GA Light Artillery (Montgomery's) Iverson Grimsley (unmarked - probable burial) (son of William and Mary Grimsley) Marthy Grimsley (marked) (wife of Iverson Grimsley) William Grimsley (husband of Mary Grimsley) Mary Grimsley ? - after 1880 (wife of Wm Grimsley) Virginia Crilley

    3. Max, you are so right about what great things turn up on these lists --- and it is always because of good people like Robert Nobles who go to the trouble to share their data. And he did go to a lot of work in scanning them --- twice to try to improve the scan... Also it is people like you, Max, who are taking the time to share that you can identify someone ---- As Gaila said so well "dismissed" meant moving to another church....in contrast to "expelled". Where is the mt. carmel Baptist Cemetery? I'd like to add any information you have on your Benfords to a list..... and list them as "probable" no headstone. Then someone may come along with proof one way or another.... Max Smith" <max_grace@charter.net> I was excited to see my great grandmother listed on this list as "Mrs. Mary Benford (dismissed)." Although I wonder why she was dismissed. She was Mrs. Robert Meroland (Maryland) Benford. I believe she might have been a Bloodworth before marriage. I also think she is buried in an unmarked grave in the Mt Carmel Baptist Church cemetery. There is a Benford monument there with 4 associated graves. I think that she and her husband are buried there. You never know what is going to turn up on one of these lists. Virginia Crilley

    3. Robert Nobles has provided us with a real treasure --- handwritten membership rolls for Cool Spring Primitive Baptist Church.....(Twiggs County) http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/twiggs/churches/coolspring.htm It is so rare that we have access to these church rolls --- and I do hope some of you can identify some of the people listed here. We should all be grateful for this wonderful contribution!! Now, hopefully we can all work together and find out more.... I've made a valiant effort to transcribe the 1879 roll --- but I don't really know the names of these people --- and I'm hoping that someone else will recognize them and help me with some corrections. If anyone has access to any census or anything else that would help on the spellings --- please do a look-up for me. We need the history of this church --- and also the Cemetery (which I assume was next to it) Also the LOCATION --- and the years that it was in existence would be helpful. Does anyone know the Association this church would have been in? I know the Flint River Association of 1828 we have on-line --- but Twiggs is not included in that one.
