Have found Hampton Lisle in 1830 Twiggs County census. By early 1830s hee was acquiring land in south Alabama. Name has been spelled Lisle, Lyles, Liles and many other names over the years. Does anyone have access or any information on Hampton or any of the Liles families in early Twiggs County GA? A book on Pea Ridge AL (Covington CO) lists Hampton as son of John, born 1755 SC, along with Sherwood/Sherrod/Sherud and Cassius. Hampton's son William L Liles/Lyles/Lisle married Martha ann Shows in Butler Co AL and is my line. I have pictures of Martha Ann, thier son Madison and his wife Sarah/Sallie Highsmith. After Williams death Martha married George Wyatt Clark. thanks Doris Mayer Reece --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Win a $20,000 Career Makeover at Yahoo! HotJobs

Rose Oliver was born in North Carolina in June, 1814, and died in Albany, August 16th, making her age over 97 years. She belonged to James Miller from birth and became the property of James Shine Miller, who brought her to Twiggs County, Ga. from North Carolina in 1832, and to Dougherty County in 1852. She was the "Black Mammy" of all the Miller children, and after her emancipation she remained loyal to the family and loved those children as her own, and none the less was their love for her. They always affectionately called her "Mammy Rose". Last week shen she realized that death was approaching she sent for each of the Miller children, as she did for those of her own blood relationship, that she might bid each "good bye" and leave a parting word of comfort and exhortation. "Mammy Rose" joined the Methodist Church in slavery time with the family to which she belonged. She professed as strong a faith in God and manifested as bright a hope for Heaven as anyone with whom the writer has ever spoken. Such negroes have been a great blessing to the country. It is with sadness that we note the passing of these reliable and trustworthy ante-bellum landmarks. signed, S. C. Olliff Baconton, Ga. Additional Comments: This obituary made me very sad. I would love to be in contact with any of "Mammy Rose's" descendants. I believe that she originally was the slave of Elizabeth Oliver who was the first wife of James Shine Miller. James and Elizabeth moved to Twiggs County, Georgia in 1832. This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.1 Kb

April 8, 1840 she was married to James Shine Miller. Of this union there were ten children, five of whom survive her, namely, Mrs. Ann Mercer, Mrs. W. J. Mercer, Mrs. Laura Barnett, Mrs. J. R. Pinson, and Mr. J. S. Miller; also their half sister, Mrs. M. E. Barksdale, survives to mourn her departure. There are twenty-five grandchildren and seventeen great- grandchildren living. She joined the Methodist Church July 20, 1842, and was converted on October 17, 1842, at a camp meeting in Jerffersonville, Twiggs County, Ga. From that time her life was one of rare saintliness and devotion to her Lord. She was ever found "fervent in spirit;" serving the Lord; rejoicing in hope; patient in tribulation; continuing instant in prayer; distributing to the necessity of the saints; given to hospitality." would that we were all as faithful as was she. Even extreme age did not prevent her from attending her Church services. Just three weeks before she left us, she was in her place in the Church, listening to her pastor. What an inspiration to him--What a rebuke to the young and active. We shall miss her prayers, her counsel and her genial smiles, but our loss is her gain. We have only lost a very dear loved one, she has gained heaven. August 22, 1856, aged 72 years. She was born in Jones County, N. C. in the year 1784. Her parents were John and Clarissa Shine. The family name of her mother was Williams. The deceased was the niece of Mrs. Clarissa Nixon of Topsail Inlet, near Wilmington, N. C. who is mentioned in the Journal of Bishop Asbury. She was also the niece of Rev. Daniel Shine of Louisburg, N. C. who traveled in the Virginia Conference as far back as 1795--one of the excellent men of the earth who lived to do good. In 1804 she was married to James Miller, with whom she lived in great happiness until his death in 1829. By this marriage she had nine children, five of whom survive. In the course of her pilgrimage whe was called to endure many trials; but her faith never wavered, her song of praise never ceased--for she had constant melody in her heart. Her house was the preachers home. It was her privilege to hear Bishop Asbury preach. About forty years ago that ornament of the church, now Bishop Early, was Presiding Elder of the District in which she resided, and was often her guest. In 1821, the venerable Bishop McKendree and his traveling companion, Rev. Henry Smith, spent two days at her house, under her roof, accompanied by Rev. Robert Flournoy of the South Carolina Conference. She loved to talk about her Presiding Elders of other days: Hines, Skidmore, Compton, Howard, Arson, and others, and of the Circuit riders, to all of whom she was a sister indeed. Most of these laborers in the Vineyard have gone on high. The sainted mother in Israel has at length followed, to join the loved ones near the throne of the Redeemer. In 1832 she removed from Jones County, N.C., with the son at whose house she died; and in 1837 she was married to Edmund Hodges, a man of advanced age, whose children had grown and left him. With this good man she passed six years in harmony, until his death in 1843. She afterwards resided near Andrew Chapel, (Twiggs County) where she had her membership. Always in her seat on days of public worship, and at class meeting, she enjoyed the sanctuary as her chosen spot. God often filled her cup of joy to overflowing. For the last few years she resided with her son near Albany, whose large family of daughters, from womanhood to infancy, appealed to her maternal heart, and called forth all its tender emotion. She was the priestess of the household. All were instructed in holy things, and prayer ascended at the family alter. She was ill but three days, and her confidence in God was firm to the last. To her relatives at her bedside she feebly uttered these dying words--"I'm almost gone--if I were not prepared it would be too late now," and then calmly closing her eyes, she fell asleep in Jesus. Additional Comments: Sarah Williams Shine Miller Hodges is this submitter's great, great, great, great grandmother. I noticed on that detachment of Militia for Ft. Telfair for War of 1812 showed a Caleb McKinney - does anyone know if this is the same Caleb for whom McKinney Melton witnessed a power of atty in Edgefield Dist SC in 1808? Also mentioned in this power of atty was a Joseph. McKinney Melton came to Twiggs certainly before 1820, as well as Clem and William Melton. WIlliam D. Melton was still in Edgefield at the time of this deed of Dec 28, 1820 in which McKinney Melton and Clem Melton Sr witnessed William W. Melton of Twiggs County GA land to WIlliam D. Melton for $100.00 in Edgefield Dist SC (recorded of course in Edgefield Dist). Still searching for just what the connection is between McKinney Melton and Caleb McKinney, Joseph McKinney, Clem Melton Sr and Jr., William W. Melton and William D. Melton. William D. is said to be the son of WIlliam W. Melton. Thanks, Trish Elliott-Kashima, pkashima@lorettotel.net, Lawrenceburg, TN

Hi Trish, Thanks for your reply. According to Randolph County, Ga. records, Quincey P. Bailey and Martha Augustus Melton were married March 29, 1853. I am advised that after Quincey was killed in the War Martha married a Teagle and moved to Arkansas. We are in touch with the Bailey descendants in Ark. and have records of the descendants there. My daughter, Linda Rollins, even attended a Bailey reunion there. I have considerable Melton information including your message of 5/8/2003 in which you advised that it was McKinney's descendnts who went to Winn Parish, La. along with my Bryan Bailey b. 1806. Teagles were also on this wagon train. You give me info on the family advising that you descend from Matthew and his daughter. Because of the Quincey marriage to Martha Melton, I have condsiderable info from Melton researchers, so do not spend a lot of time providing me with Melton research. I am trying to find out where my Philip was before 1822 in Twiggs County and would be interested in any Melton who lived elsewhere before that in the hope that Philip was in the same location before Twiggs since the Meltons and Baileys moved together from Twiggs to Randolph to Winn Parish. Of course, would love any connection you have between McKinney and Philip before 1822. Do you know when McKinney arrived in Twiggs? I am advised by Ga. Archives that the Twiggs courthouse burned twice and that there are very few old records. Yes, see below. Have corresponded with you before. Have your message of 5/8/03. My Quincey P. Bailey b. 1803 in Houston County, Ga., who was killed in the War, married Martha Melton. Quincey's father was Bryant Bailey b. 1806 and his father was Philip Bailey b. ca. 1770, place unknown. Have also determined that some of Philip's children were Lovecey (Lavissa, Louisa, etc.) b. 1793 in NC, Bryant b. 1806 in Ga. and John and Thomas b. 1806 in Ga. Can identify no NC connection for Philip and Lovecey Your post at the Twiggs County, Ga. Mailing List indicates you have a Twiggs connection and I have recently learned that my Baileys did as well. Have Philip on the 1818 Twiggs Tax Digest living next to a Williams Bailey whom the Ga. Archives archivist suggests is probably related because it appears they filed a joint tax return. Have not been able to connect Williams yet. This is the earliest record I have on Philip. Cannot identify any Meltons in the 1818 Twiggs Tax Digest. There is a name that could be Quinn Melton, but the handwriting is hard to decipher. As you probably know, Twiggs adjoins Houston County where our Baileys and Meltons moved apparently in the late 1820's. Am hoping my Baileys were with your McKinney in Edgefield District and will now check there. If you have any indication that the Baileys and Meltons were together anywhere before Twiggs I would love to have this info, because I cannot make a NC connection. Incidentally, have never been able to determine anything about Quincey Baileys death. Do not know where, when or how he was killed, or where he is buried. Have his military records that show nothing. Last record is a muster roll in 1863. If you have anything on this, let me know. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: MELTON Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5d.2ADE/502 Message Board Post: I am interested in any Meltons in early Twiggs Co GA. There is a connection between McKinney Melton (my ancestor and WIlliam W. Melton Sr., his son WIlliam Drury Melton Jr. and Clem Melton Sr. All mentioned in deeds in Edgefield DIst SC regarding land there (1808) as well as in Twiggs Co GA (1820). Interested in any Twiggs county documents that mention Meltons including Hannah Melton who is mentioned in Stone Creek Baptist Church in 1811. A Hannah Melton is in Marion CO GA early o n - which is where McKinney and his kids went to. Thanks.
