    1. [GATWIGGS] Twiggs Co., Obit #2
    2. This is the obit of my gg grandmother Lucy Ann Lingo Solomon. She was the first wife of Rev. Lewis Solomon. She was born 1 Mar 1818 and died 14 Apr 1863. Rose OBITUARY OF LUCY ANN LINGO SOLOMON Died in Twiggs, County, April 14th, after an illness of one week, Mrs. Luch Ann, wife of Rev. Lewis Solomon, aged 45 years. It is with feelings of the deepest regrets that we chronicle the death of Mrs. Solomon. But God in his wise providence has seen fit to remove her from our midst. She has left a husband and nine children to mourn her loss, and her death has caused a vacuum in our midst which time can never fill, for as a wife there is none can surpass her, as a mother, none more fond or affectionate. She was amiable in her disposition, kind and affable in her manners, and none loved her so well as those who knew her best, but, alas! She has passed away. Mother--what a world of affection is comprehended in that single word, how sad to think that her little children is deprived of the wise counsel and zealous care with which she would have guided them through life, and watched with feelings which none but a mother can know. But the gloomy grave has places her far beyond their reach, and the sweet voice of con- solation for the various life attended upon them, sounds in their ears no more. Mrs. Solomon possessed that gem of all gems which enrich the coronet of a Lady's character, unaffected piety, and the spell which bound her affections to things below is broken and she is wafted on the wings of hope to the habitation of God, where it is her de- light to hold sweet communion with the spirits that have been ransomed from the thralldom of earth and wreathed with a garland of glory. Her name is now written in the "Book of Life," and when mountains fade away, and every memento of earthly greatness is lost in the general wreck of nature, it will remain and swell the list of that mighty throng which is clothed with the mantle of righteousness, and her voice attuned to the melody of Heaven. When the last trumpet shall be heard and sleeping millions awake to judgement, she shall be presented "faultless before the throne of God with exceeding joy, and a crown of glory that shall never fade away." Husband and children, follow the Christian example set by your wife and mother; it will light you through every labyrinth in the wilderness of life, gild the gloom that will gather around you in a dying hour, and bring you safely over the tempestuous Jordan of death into the haven of promised and settled rest. W.T.Z. April 22, 1863

    1. [GATWIGGS] Twiggs Co., GA. Obit
    2. You asked for us to post obits or anything else we might have. Here is the obit of my gg grandfather Rev. Lewis Solomon. He was born 4 Oct 1812 and died 20 Jan 1872. Through this obit is how I found out he was married twice. He married again after my gg grandmother passed away. His second wife is mentioned in his obit as standing around the bedside. Rose OBITUARY FOR LEWIS SOLOMON IN MEMORIAM "Friend after friend depart, Who has not lost a friend?" Died, at his residence in Twiggs County, of a complication of diseases, the Rev. Lewis Sol- omon; aged 59 years and 6 months. The writers of this humble tribute knew him intimately for the last forty years, and can truly say that his character for truth and hon- esty has never been questioned. His generosity was unbounded. He was liberal to a fault. Un- der his humble roof the stranger ever found a hearty welcome. With him, he was always ready to divide his frugal meal or render assistance when he thought necessity required it. "This truth he proved in every path, An honest man's the noblest work of God." In his last illness the best medical aid the country afforded was procured. A devoted wife and fond children watched assiduously and un- tiringly around his bed, but alas! at midnight in the 15th of the present month death sped his insidious and fatal shaft, and the voice of a good man was forever hushed in death. Six long weeks he lingered, and then at last, with- out a sigh, groan or glance to tell a parting pang, the spirit from him passed. He has gone to the grave, but the deeds of a well-spent life will live in the memory of posterity. He died a Christian. Light be the turf upon his bosom. Farewell, happy spirit! Faults he had. Who has them not? But they lean to virtue's side. To his memory we give a friend's offering--a tear. The subject of this notice had peculiar ideas in regard to the interment of his body. In health many weeks previously to his death, he left a written request that the undersigned, especial friends of his, so soon as he died, whether it be long or short, at once repair to his residence, superintend his burial and deposit his remains in the grave with their own hands in his family grave-yard. The request of our deceased friend and brother was complied with, and in token of friendship and the high esteem we had for him we have offered the above tribute. R. R. Slappy, Jno. H. Denson, J. T. Glover, Jno. A. Nelson, Wm. Faulk, Levi Gallemore, D. G. Hughes. January 20, 1872

    1. [GATWIGGS] Twiggs BARRS family
    2. Crilley
    3. Can anyone help out on the Barrs in Twiggs? Just to remind everyone, I live in Waco, TX, and really don't do any research in Twiggs. I'm just maintaining the page on a temporary basis, and helping to get this Twiggs List moving alittle bit. I also hope to get more things on-line for Twiggs County.... The first step every one of you can do is to POST on-line what little bit you have. Even if it is only a QUERY.....like this one. Be sure to post it on the Query Board.. If you have even ONE family in a cemetery in Twiggs....please send it to me. We can build these one family at a time! If you have ONE obituary clipping from TWIGSS.....post that too. I would venture to say that there is nothing too tiny for us to want to put on-line. So even if you are just beginning your TWIGGS research.....please share what you have found out. Don't just wait for someone ELSE to post something about your family.....share and ask questions.....that's the way you learn what is available for researching in TWIGGS.... Pat sets such a great example because she brings back "whole sheets" of information and then types them up. >Reply-To: "Al Barrs" <albarrs@wfeca.net> > > FEB 6th James Barrs was on the 1830 Census. Can you help with any >information on Arthur and more information on James Barrs and his family? > Thanks!!! 1. [GATWIGGS] Migration Project
    2. Crilley
    3. We've often talked about how our families moved to various locations.....NOW there is a place for everyone to submit these migrations! The Migrations project at http://www.migrations.org I just briefly visited it and wanted you to urge you to get your materials together and post on the site. Visit the "post data" site and look around to see what you need. Basically it is this: 1)Name 2)Year born 3)Year died **can leave these blank or estimate 4)Where born Town/county State Then you get to the migration part. You've already listed the place of birth.... 5)so the next step is the 1st move the family made. (Instructions are very clear... so take a few minutes to read them carefully) 6)Additional information You can add some special notes if you know other members of the family that moved at the same time. Since there are lots of spaces, you can provide all the movement for that individual until he dies. Then start out with another individual and move that family. It should be lots of fun! On the front page, you can click on the State, i.e. Georgia....but the Georgia page isn't on-line yet. When it does come on, then you'll see in alphabetical order all those who have posted. In the meantime, you can post your materials from the FRONT page, and then when the Georgia page is on-line, all of it will appear. It should be interesting to do "searches" to see other families that came to the same area at the same time from the same place!! Our county pages will be able to link , but just thought you might beinterested in taking a look at this in the meantime! Go get your dates, and names together....and start posting. If you have ANY questions, just ask. I know lots of you haven't posted much before, but it really isn't that difficult. It's like anything.....very confusing the first time you post something on-line, but then it gets easy.... Virginia

The RR was one of the first=20 in the county being built in 1871. Convicts were used for labor. The highway=20 was paved in 1928. The town is built in a valley with the historical old Bowen=20 home on one hill and the Haddock Junior High School on the other. Haddock takes its name from Caswell HADDOCK and his wife Milbry Barnes=20 HADDOCK, the earliest settlers in this section and it was from a part of their=20 plantation that Haddock was built. Milbry J. BARNES a daughter of James BARNES, was married to Caswell=20 HADDOCK Jan. 13, 1835 by Nathan PASMORE, JP. Prior to her marriage Milbry lived with her parents on their plantation near= =20 Bradley. After her marriage to Caswell HADDOCK, the couple moved to this=20 plantation also owned by her father. This plantation contained 1,350 acres of=20 land. With her to her new home she brought a number of slaves also given to her=20 by her father. At his death Mar. 10, 1859, James BARNES deeded this plantation=20 to Milbry Barnes HADDOCK and her children. Caswell and Milbry HADDOCK reared a large family. Their children were=20 Jimmie (killed in the Battle of Bull Run), Victoria, Rebecca, Bluford, Jeannie,=20 Thomas, Joseph, Ella, Christiana and William. Sherman passed through this plantation on his march from Atlanta to the sea,= =20 burning the warehouse where several years cotton crops were stored, killing=20 livestock and plundering as he went. His army made its headquarters at the=20 Bowen home about a mile away. After the building of the Georgia RR, Samuel ANCHORS and his family moved=20 to Haddock, then only a flag station. John D. ANCHORS, a son, started out west=20 and stopping to tell his parents good-bye, met and fell in love with Christiana=20 HADDOCK, daughter of Caswell and Milbry. The plans for the trip west were=20 abandoned and John D. ANCHORS and Christiana HADDOCK were married. =20 They built their home near the RR, this was really the first house ever built in the=20 present site of Haddock. This house was build about 1872. At the death of Milbry Barnes HADDOCK in 1885, the estate was divided among=20 her children. At this time ten acres were sold at public auction, divided into lots=20 for a section of the town of Haddock. This section was laid off in blocks and the=20 streets names. The first store in Haddock was built by GOLDSTEIN, this was followed closely= =20 by a grocery store owned by Caswell HADDOCK. Other early merchants were=20 George WALKER, John D. ANCHORS, and Richard BULLINGTON. In 1882 Henry J. FINNEY moved to Haddock and was joined by his brother=20 James T. FINNEY in 1884 when they jointly opened a mercantile business. The first schoolhouse built in Haddock was built by John D. ANCHORS in 1884=20 as a semi-private school. The school was a one-room frame building, taught by=20 Sue NORMAN whose salary was paid by John D. ANCHORS and Henry=20 NEWSOME. Other children in this section were given the advantage of an earl= y=20 education. As years passed and more families moved to Haddock, this school no longer me= t=20 the requirements and so in 1892 the Jones County Board of Education purchase= d=20 a plot of land from Susie PHILLIPS, daughter of Ella HADDOCK and a larger=20 school was built. John D. ANCHORS and J.T. FINNEY were the first trustees o= f=20 this school. In time this school also proved insufficient and in 1908 David d. BATCHELOR=20 gave one and one-half acres of land and a brick building was erected. Trustees at=20 this time were E. W. COLEMAN, C.W. MIDDLEBROOKS, and C.H. KELLER. =20 This building was used until 1934 when the county with the aid of the Federa= l=20 Government built a model Junior High School which the citizens of Haddock=20 prize highly. The first cotton gin in Haddock was owned and operated by Robert COOX, this=20 was a traveling gin. When all the cotton in one section was ginned, he would take=20 his gin apart, pack and move on to the next community. Thus he made his annual=20 visit to each section. The first gristmill in Haddock was owned by John DUPREE. Cy BROWN (a=20 negro) ran the first blacksmith shop. The Blount home so called for Colonel James H. BLOUNT who last made his=20 home there is located about a mile from haddock. This is one of the oldest homes=20 in the vicinity of Haddock and still retains much of its charm and dignity, the=20 architectural plan is of colonial type and especially beautiful is the old winding=20 staircase in the front hall. This home was built for General GORDON by Daniel=20 PRATT. General GORDON sold this home to Thomas O. BOWEN of Clinton. Thom.=20 BOWEN and his wife who was a BLOUNT of Clinton, made their home here. In=20 November 1864, Sherman made his headquarters here with this family. Mrs.=20 Sally MATHIS, one of our oldest citizens was then little Sally BOWEN of abou= t=20 five years of age. Mrs. BOWEN had two brothers who were outstanding citizens. =20 James H. BLOUNT who was for 25 years Congressman from this district and Dr.=20 Horatio BOWEN of Clinton. This home after many years was sold to Colonel=20 James H. BLOUNT later owned by his daughter Mrs. Walter D. LAMAR of=20 Macon. Other early settlers in Haddock were the LESTERS, BONNERS, GODARDS,=20 CHAMBERS, MIDDLEBROOKS, PITTS, MORRIS, PHILLIPS, HUFFS,=20 CALIFFS, BIVINS, ANDREWS, CLARKS, MERCERS, SPEIGHTS, FINNEYS =20 and PURSLEYS. At first there were no churches in Haddock. The Methodists attended at Fortville=20 and the Baptists at Blountsville. In 1900 the Fortville Methodist Church was moved to Haddock. For several years=20 the Methodists and Baptists held services in this church, some Baptist services=20 were also held in the K. P. Hall. In 1912 the present Baptist church was built.=20 This is of wooden structure and painted white. In 1913 the present Methodist church was built. This church is built of brick and=20 is much superior to the first building. The building committee were: J.T.=20 FINNEY, J.A. PITTS, S.H. HADDOCK, T.R. TURNER, and J.A.=20 MIDDLEBROOKS. Augustus ERNEST was pastor at this time. The first peach orchard in Haddock was set out by John D. ANCHORS in 1903. =20 A few years later J.T. FINNEY set out an orchard. Around 1905 the town was incorporated. Henry T. FINNEY was the first mayor.= =20 The aldermen were: John D. ANCHORS, S. H. HADDOCK, T.R. TURNER and=20 C.W. MIDDLEBROOKS. Charlie ROBERTS was the first town marshall. =20 Haddock is not incorporated today. In 1910 ROSS built the first telephone exchange. Daniel HADDOCK succeeded=20 him in this business. Today his niece Ellen BONNER is the owner. Haddock has=20 always received excellent service from this company (now a part of county=20 system owned by Ralph LINEBERGER). In 1912 a part of the business section of Haddock was destroyed by fire. Th= e=20 buildings lost at this time were stores owned by H.J. and J.T. FINNEY, S.H.=20 HADDOCK, H.C. PEARSON and J.N. HOLLOWAY, R.H. KINGMAN and=20 R.B. BONNER=92S Market. This same year saw the enlargement of the residential section. A part of=20 Christiana Haddock ANCHORS estate was bought by C.W. MIDDLEBROOKS,=20 divided into lots and sold at public auction. In May 1936 the Georgia Power Company extended the power line from Gray to=20 Haddock. Today Haddock is a thriving little town of about 500 inhabitants. (1957). The=20 business section is composed of three general merchandise stores owned and=20 operated by J.A. and J.D. MIDDLEBROOKS, J.A. PURSLEY and C.W.=20 FINNEY; a garage owned by J. V. MERCER; Post Office, Ga. Depot, Haddock=20 Gin Co. and Jones County Bank. The Jones County Bank is the oldest bank in the=20 County, G.A. SMITH is present and the Cherokee Products Co. owned by Logan,=20 Albert, Ernest and Mrs. BLOODWORTH, is located northeast of Haddock. =20 Tarver Smith Lumber Company, is another industry in Haddock. EAST JULIETTE (GLOVER) The topography of the land in the section of East Juliette is hilly and rolling. In=20 about 1825 when the Creek Indians were pushed across the Ocmulgee River,=20 white settlers moved in where the famous Indian trail =93Horse-Path=94 cross= ed, some=20 settling on the east side in Jones County and some on the west side in Monro= e=20 county. For many years a ferry was used to cross this river, until a toll bridge was=20 built. It is said that Mike DENNIS erected the first gristmill at Juliette. East Juliette, located on the Ocmulgee River in northwestern corner of Jones= =20 County was first called Glover=92s Mill until about 1925 when the post offices of=20 Juliette on the west side of the river in Monroe county and Glover=92s Mill on the=20 west were consolidated. It was when the Southern railroad was built that the little settlement becam= e=20 known as Juliette, and tradition says that the name was in honor of the first white=20 woman to cross the river to make her home on the west side. Another story states=20 that someone suggested that the two settlements, one on the east side and one on=20 the west side be known as Romeo and Juliette. In 1872 Nathaniel GLOVER bought a mill from West SMITH, a native and =20 builder of the mill. GLOVER set up a sawmill and cut lumber to build a store. =20 Later he cut, molded and burned the brick with which to build the factory. In=20 1898, a log dam was constructed on the river to furnish power with which to run=20 the textile mill and a gin. After Nat GLOVER=92s
