>From the book: "Abstracts Of Some Documents Of Twiggs County, Georgia"-By~Eleanor Davis McSwain (1972). Book found at the State Achives in Atlanta, Georgia. In this book there is info about a mercantile store that was located in the town of Marion, Ga. Twiggs County, and owned by Mr. Ira PECK. He kept a "Day Book" of his customers names. I only have 2 pages from the book as I was looking for any info on my YOUNG's that resided in Marion, Ga. Twiggs County. My George Remer YOUNG's name was in the book that is why I have only 2 pages. I wish I had the whole book now !! If anyone goes to the State Archives and sees this book and you copy the pages of the names you are searching for, please add them to the list so we can all benefit. This book also contains other documents as well, deed records, tax records, some wills and estate records. Page-249 "The sales of the store were totaled each day in the DAY BOOK. In 1826 the total sales amounted to $16,277.72 1/2. Only the sales for the first few months were recorded for 1827, but at that time the total was $3,886.97 3/4. It is easy to see how it was possible for Ira PECK to have a fortune thirty years later. The War and the march of progress sealed the fate of Old Marion so that the town fell into decay. The people left and the houses disappeared. Today not one is left standing. An abandoned cemetery with a marked grave of an early settler is all that remains in the town of Marion. The DAY BOOK is about 6" wide and 18" long, half the size of the record books used at that time. The old leather bound book containing 660 pages contains much information of the neighborhood. It is fortunate to have access to this book as it names the settlers in southeast Twiggs County. So many of the deeds in these pages are for lands in western Twiggs County. >From the book the names of the customers were taken and in some instances where an order was given by someone other than a customer the fact was noted if there was enough information to be of help. Sometimes a name was illegible and some few may have been overlooked, so it is hoped that the DAY BOOK can be placed on microfilm. On January 2, 1826, every person who came to trade was counted a "new" customer, for there are no earlier records. Afterwards, each new name was added to the list the first time a person came to trade. At the begining of the year 1827, many persons settled their accounts and for a time afterwards, so for a space the notations are for the settlements of the accounts. When the daily listings were begun a note was written on the side of a page "BEGIN DAILY CHARGES". MARION~2 January~1826 Nimrod W. LONG Peter G. THOMPSON Lovett B. SMITH Robert A. I'm transcribing the Court Minutes of Taylor County and came across this: ORDINARY COURT MARCH TERM 1855 Present John Sturdivant, Ordinary William H. GRIFFITH, petitions for the Guardianship of the persons and property of John H. HARRELL and James E. HARRELL, orphans of William E. HARRELL late of TWIGGS County, dec'd. Said orphans are now residents of Taylor County. Said petitioner sheweth that publication has been made in terms of the Law and no objection filed. In the 1860 Census of Taylor County you find these orphans, James and John living with William Griffith and his wife Mourning. Mourning was the sister to their mother i.e. Charity Parker who married William E. Harrell. I don't research this family....but hoped it might help someone! Virginia
