    3. Hi, This is my first post on this mail list. I would like to learn more history of Blackmon Dixon and his family who are recorded in the Federal Census of Troup county. Blackman Dixon was my great-great grandfather. According to transcribed 1850 Census history, Blackmon Dickson was born in 1803 in GA. I know from other sources that he migrated from his birth place in the Goose Creek area of Elbert County, GA to somewhere in Troup County before 1836. One court record in Troup County Archives dates Blackmon in that area in 1836. He was married on 1 Jul 1845 to Martha Harrison, born 1824 in SC. They had children and after his Martha died, he lived in Troup County until he died in 1885. Recently, I was in LaGrange, GA, and visited the Troup County Archives where I located an obituary of Blackmon Dixon that dated his death to be on the 14 Apr 1885. The obit was on microfilm of the "LaGrange Reporter", Vol. XLI, Lagrange, Georgia, Thursday, April 16, 1865, No. 16, Page 3. The obit read: "Mr. Blackmon Dixon, an old citizen of Harris county, died last Tuesday morning, at 6 o'clock. Mr. Dixon has been in feeble health for some time from extreme old age. He was in his eighty-fifth year, and a member of Shady Grove Baptist church." There are several court transactions of interest available that I did not have time to examine that I hope to research some day. At least three questions about Blackmon Dixon's life in Troup County that are pressing for me to know their answers. (1) Did he have a prior marriage to the one with Martha Harrison of SC, and if so, who was the first wife? (2) Where in Troup County did Blackmon Live? His obituary said he was an old citizen of Harris County, and a member of the Shady Grove Baptist church. Shady Grove Baptist church is located north of Columbus, GA, in Harris County, 5 miles west of Interstate 185's Exit-11, on GA Hwy-103. That is a good long buggy ride from LaGrange. Harris County was formed in 1827 from parts of Troup and Muscogee Counties, and it is likely that Shady Grove church was originally in Troup County, but I don't know. (3) Where was Blackmon buried? I walked through the Shady Grove Cemetery on two occasions and did not see a marker for Blackmon's grave, or for any of his immediate family. My interest in question (1) stems from the 1850 Census data that showed Blackmon age 47, his wife Martha age 26, and another female named Martha L., of age 16, along with three younger children that were likely those of Blackmon and Martha Harrison. It is not reasonable to think Martha L. was a daughter of Martha Harrison. Any help will be appreciated. - ---------------------------- V.
