    3. Hi Hilda, This is my first for being placed on a mailing list. I am just beginning to learn how it works. I guess I did something right when I sent in my query for the LIPHAMS in Troup Co. My question is: How do I get access to queries already sent and how do new subscribers read mine ? GATROUP is very dear to me and I don't want what happend on one of the boards I am on to happen to this one or to any of you. > >First of all let me say Rootsweb stops most spam messages before they ever get to the list. They have a program which detects this type of mail and usually stops it before it gets through. Everytime someone joins this board I get a message telling me they just subscribed or unsubscribed and they are automatically added to the list. My closing the subscription list means when that message comes to me I have to go in the owners file and add them to the list. One board I am on does this, and then he/sends a message to the board announcing this person has joined, and everyone on the board welcomes them. But before he does that he sends this person a special message asking them How they are connected, and to give him the basics. Boy did I mess up I gave him my great great great as my great. He wrote back and ask me if I enjoyed my birthday cards from the president, and did I possibly make a mistake. > > >It makes the new member feel that they have joined a great list, and they are >very comfortable from the beginning, and jump right in. This is a surname list so it's a little bit differnet in the fact that we are all looking for the same name. > >What brought me to make this decision is another board that I was on, we are not even sure who the list owner is. People join and leave very quickly. Some people are very rude to the others when they do post. The other night someone posted a porno post which was very offensive. When you know who is on the list they are not likely to do this type of thing. > >Sometimes when people post, people ask for money before they send them the information, when the person sends it they never get the information. That's one reason its a good idea to direct your post to the board and share the information the first couple of times. I am a strong beliver that it Jane Doe makes a special trip to the library or archives and spends a couple of hours looking up Aunt Ethel and Uncle Homer, and offers to mail you the documents that you should offer to reimburse her for postage and copies. I believe you join the Genealogy Society in the area you are searching. (I will post a good reason why on this later). I have already joined four societies and the Troup County Historic Society is next on my list. Although I can't attend the meeting, at least my membership hopefully will help support the research fund. If you place a post on this list and someone asks for money, please let me know immediately. > >When you are searching a site and you find someone who is looking for someone in Troup County, invite that person to join the list. The way we do this is >Hey everyone while at the library or archives, I met this person and they are looking for Aunt Gertrude, she lived in West Point in 1890, I told her about our group and she would love to be a member her email address is. I will send her a personal invitation or add her to the list immediately. I want us to grow into one of the biggest and best list on rootsweb. > >I am going to leave it up to you, If you want me to keep it open I will, >There are only a few people who have not identified themselves and my >question is why are they here? > >PLEASE PLEASE DROP ME A LINE TO LET ME KNOW HOW YOU FEEL some of you already >have. This should mean we have 52 post to read. I will go with the majority so please post to the board. > >Two more things. I missed Suzanne's post, would someone please resend it to the board. Let's give Carole a big THANKS along with your post for all those look ups she has been doing. > >Thanks Hilda > > > > > >==== GATROUP Mailing List ==== >List archives - http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl > >
