    1. [GATROUP-L] GATROUP Let's Make It the Best
    2. Hilda
    3. One more post today and I promise to be quiet and let you all have a turn. One of the reasons I started this board is because I am having a hard time finding my own relatives and keep reading and trying every source I can. I have made some wonderful friends and found some cousins I never knew I had through the internet (an exciting note on Oct 17, I am going to meet two of them in person). One person I have become quite fond of has my grandparents on the well documented side (Kilgore's and Caldwell's) has my grandmother's nickname as her name on his website. I was ready to do battle with him and wrote him a fast email and told him my grandmother was Clara not CLACK, of which I keep reminding him. I live in Central Florida and we have had our share of crazy weather this year like some of you have had. The night that the fires were rapidly spreading around us. I posted a note to the Copeland board and a lady in Cheyene Wyoming answered and we talked for two hours back and fourth. We haven't connected yet but are working very hard at it. We have found that our lines were in North Carolina together. She has become the greatest of friends and when we need that encouragement not to give up, we send each other a quick note and sometimes manage to figure out a new approac to try. I recently found another friend through another board who we had been discussing things together. She never told me anything was wrong, and I learned that while we were going back and forth, a family member of hers was dying and that I had helped her through that trying time in her life. If you are reading and article and you see a note about John Doe with a date on it, don't think that that won't help someone. It might be an uncle or gggranddad that someone has spent hours and hours looking for. Stick a piece of paper or highlight it and send it to the board. You may be rewarded with that email that says "YOUR THE GREATEST YOU DON'T KNOW HOW MANY MONTHS OR DAYS I HAVE BEEN LOOKING FOR HIM" That is better than getting that new Monte Carlo Z28 1999 for Christmas. (Not really hubby -just kidding). It's one of the most heartwarming experiences you can have. Ok that's it I promise no more today. Hilda P.S. I am searching for Cobb and Copeland. Anyone connected?

    1. [GATROUP-L] Re: New Troup List
    2. Hi Lynda, Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. None of the Browns or the Scotts were names that I recognized. But, my goodness, the locations are so right!!! I have a dead end Brown in my grandfather, William Franklin Brown b. 1884 d. 1969. I have just started to look for his parents. I don't know his mother's name nor father's nor where he was born. He married Catherine Josephine Harris in 1901. They lived in Carroll County. I'm told that they were cousins, so he is probably related to the W. A. D. Brown (Catherine's grandfather) that I mentioned in the Troup list. My Scott's lived mainly in Calhoun Co., AL and later in DeKalb. I'll keep in touch if anything rings a bell. Barbara

    2. Hilda
    3. Welcome to all our new members who joined us today, we are still growing rapidly. One of our members sent me a note last night with a very good suggestion. Curtis suggested that when we post to the board that we put a TG in the subject line. Like Curtis I recieve mail that I not sure about and sometimes will delete it. If we start the subject line with the TG we will recognize that it is from someone on the board. Looking forward to hearing from all of you. Hilda

    1. New Troup List
    2. Hi everyone, I'm so happy to be a part of a brand new list! It has been a good idea in the past for me to check out counties surrounding the ones that were settled in by my ancestors. You just never know who you might be discovered! I am looking for parents and any information on W. A. D. BROWN b. 1829, d. 1901 in Randolph Co., AL. He married Sophia C. CRUMP 1849 in Elbert Co., GA. In 1860, they had a daughter, M. Eliza. Most likely, they had other children whom I would love to find, but haven't yet. ( M. Eliza was my great grandmother) He served in Co. K, 38th Georgia Regt., was wounded and discharged in 1864. I have other BROWNS that I'm looking for in the same general area, but will save that post for another day. More names for later include SMITH, KILGORE, SCOTT, and HARRIS. Counties that they were from include Carroll, Cleburne, Calhoun, Haralson, Randolph, Franklin, Elbert, Coweta, and probably others. Thanks go to Hilda for getting us up and going on our new list. Looking forward to hearing from all of you. Barbara Klaffke, barbekay@aol.com

    3. Hi everyone, My name is Mike Kelly and I live on the hurricane prone coast of NC, five miles from the beach. I am very interested in Troup County, GA for two reasons. I am desperately trying to find all information, including descendants, of my g-g-grandfathers sister and husband. I am concentrating on the surnames of KELLY and WALKER. Caroline KELLY b. 1849 married a Jowel (Joel) WALKER in abt. 1869. They were known to have moved to Troup County, GA. Caroline died in 1880 leaving a husband and I believe at least three children. I am also hoping that one of the descendants of this union might also have more info on the family tree. Secondly, there are many LaGrange's in this great land of ours. My g-g-grandmother Addie MOORE's family was from Macon County, AL. Across the state line from Troup County. Her brother Wesley's son died in LaGrange building a railroad. The problem with this is that my g-g-grandfather and sons were railroad men around LaGrange alright, but, the LaGrange in TEXAS, not Georgia. What I am trying to determine is if Addie's brother and family moved to Texas with the rest of the family in 1868 or stayed in AL/GA stateline area. I now quite a round about way of asking if anyone knows if there were any railroads being built in Troup County/LaGrange area starting right after the Civil War until say about 1875 time period? Thanks for all the support and help. Mike Kelly firewalker@gibralter.net

    1. Hi Mary
    2. Hilda
    3. Hi Mary Welcome to the Group. I flew into Colorado Springs two weeks ago to visit a relative in Lake George. Beautiful Country there. They took us over Engineers Pass by jeep trail. elevation 14,000 I think. The scenery was fantastic. It was a thrill I will never forget. Do you have the book A History of LaGrange, Georgia 1828-1900 and Genealogical and Historical Register of Troup County, Georgia by Forest Clark Johnson, III. There is quite a bit of information about the Sledge family in it, did not see a listing for the Shular's and Harris also has quite a few listings. The book is available through the Troup County Archives. The email address for the archives is http://www.lgc.peachnet.edu/archives/tcarchive.htm This book is copyrighted so I will try to get in touch with Mr. Clark to ask permission to do reprints to the list from it. Again welcome to the group. Hilda

    2. Hilda
    3. I would like to welcome all of our new members who joined our list today. Not only is our list growing it is spreading we have members from Washington State, Hawaii, Louisana, Florida and Georgia. Would love to hear where all of you are from and the surnames you are searching. Today I sent email messages to the LaGrange Daily News and also to the Kaye Minchew the Director of the Troup County Archives informing them about our group and asking them to post a notice. Kay has joined our group. If you have not visited the archives in LaGrange, it is one of the best research facilities in the state and can be reached by the internate. The cemetary archives is an excellent source. They also have several good books for sale there. I will have to post the website later as I have it bookmarked. We also have the pleasure of having David Morgan as a member. David is the Coordinator for the Troup County genealogy project, a part of USGenWeb. If you did not see his post today, maybe he will post it again from time to time for our new members. We are only one day old and twentyfive members strong, congratulations. Looking forward to all those informative posts. Hilda
