Lynda you can purchase one through the Troup County Archives. I will have to do the address later. I have it booked marked. I found it the first time by doing a search for Troup County History. Firewalker, there are some great internet historic map sites. I need to go through my notes and find the web addresses. (My to do list is also growing.) Anybody have any sites handy that you could send us. When you send to replies back to the sender and to the list that person gets two copies of the email. Hilda
Thank you for the bit of history. This brings your area more to life for me. What I am wondering is if anyone might have maps of the area from the Civil War period? Or point me in a direction. I would be interested in state, county, town city limit lines. Since my family seems to have traversed the area from Columbus to Tuskegee before, during, and after the CIvil War I would like a map to bring closer to home what was there and was going on. It might give me a much better idea about their lifestyles and why they might move around so much. It also might help me to picture why my people eventually went to Texas.
Hi Everybody I want to say welcome to all of you who have joined yesterday and today. We just keep adding new members. I hope all of you that are new will post a note and let us know a little about who you are and who you are searching. This is so much fun. All of you are really bringing back memories for me. My husband thinks I am loosing it, I will read your notes and shout out oh that reminds me of Polly (Surname) we use to have so much fun and David (Surname) BOY could he make your heart throb! LaGrange was a small town and a wonderful place to grow up. I never realized how much I miss living there. I hope we can make some connections. Quite a few of your surnames are still listed in the phone book there. So you may even try writing to some of them, and see if they can give you any information. Speaking of the phone book I was looking over some posts this am and comparing them to the listings, when I saw this story in the front and thought I would share it with you. It was the spring of 1865. An earthen fort had been painstakingly built across from the Chattahooche River two years before, to protect the Chattahoochee River bridges and strategic railroad junction at West Point from Union invasion. The town was quiet and the river flowed peacefully around its bends. Supplies were plentiful, thanks to the railroad and local farmers. West Point was a strategic store house for the Confederacy, and so was targeted by the Union forces. Several Confederate hosiptals were full or recuperating soldiers, some of whom would soon be elevated to hero status - at least those who survived. The earthen fort was about 35 yards square and consisted of a four-and-a-half-foot high parapet of packed clay, fronted by a ditch 12 feet wide by 10 feet deep. In the last dying breaths of the Confederacy, fort Tyler held out to the very last. Early in the morning on Easter Sunday, April 16, the Federals attacked - 3,500 of them. Commanded by Brigadier GENERAL ROBERT C. TYLER, a garrison of about 120 convalescing soldiers from local hospitals and civilian volunteers banded together with a small unit of soldiers from LaGrange to defend the fort and town. All day the town was barraged by cannon fire, and Mrs. A. W. GRIGGS, a wife of a Confederate surgeon, led the women of the town in giving aid and shelter to the wounded from both armies. by afternoon, the fort had fallen to the Federals, and GENERAL TYLER was dead. Following the battle, federal troops destroyed 19 confederate engines and 340 railroad cars located with supplies, cotton goods, machinery and leather at the Freight Depot in West Point. The fort was named in honor of Tyler, quatermaster for the Confederacy. His background remains a mystery and no family has ever been known to visit his grave. In 1895, a reservoir was built on the hill to preserve the southeast section of the earthworks. Today fort Tyler is open for quiet reflective walks. Do we have any that are searching the Tyler name? This is what I mean when I see a name and date I get so sidetracked, so I book mark it purchased a flex file and will stick it in the T's. Looking forward to more of those post. Has anyone connected yet. Happy Labor Day and don't work to hard. Hilda
I am searching for information on Warren Hopson, and his wife, Sabra ? He was in the 1830 and 1840 census, near to what we believe is his brother, William. William was made the guardian of Louisa Bluford Hopson after the death of her father, Hardy. Is Hardy the father of all three? Nancy Wedemeyer baylorbear@msn.com

Hello, I am enjoying the new Troup List, and appreciate such an enthusiastic and contributory listowner as Hilda. Thanks. I have WILKERSON in Troup County. I am particularly interested in an ABLE/ABEL WILKERSON, who won land there in the 1827 Lottery. Abel is found in Putnam and Irwin County, before he moved to Troup. He is on the 1830 and 1840 Troup Co. Census. I did some research at the Archives there and found several deeds for Abel, one of which listed him as a resident of Tallapoosa County AL, dated 1842. Other names on these deeds as witnesses or participants are: Asa BENNETT, Edmund CARLISLE, HOGG, SAXON, IRWIN WILKERSON, HARRISON S. WILKERSON. (By the way, I have transcribed these deeds, and will gladly share if anyone is interested). Abel is the son of HAMMON WILKERSON. The children of Hammon are: John Wilkerson b. 1777 Elijah Wilkerson b. 1778 William Wilkerson b. 1779 Abel Wilkerson b. 1780 Reuben Wilkerson b. 1781 Frances Wilkerson Zarah Wilkerson b. 1783 Lemuel Wilkerson b 1784 Caleb Wilkerson b. 1785 Jeptha Wilkerson b. 1792 Eldred Wilkerson b. 1796 Simeon Wilkerson b. 1798 I realize this is a lengthy message, but am interested in any Wilkerson connection to any of these. Thanks, Karen Wilkerson Robinson karenr@c-gate.net

Hi Suzanne: Don't have any information on the Traylors myself, however, if I might make a suggestion. If you are close to LaGrange, Georgia, why not stop in at either the Traylor Jewelry Shop (can't think of the name of the street now as I haven't been there for any length of time in about 40-50 years) located around the corner from Bull Street going towards the College, I think or Traylors Pawn Shop on Greenville Rd (I think again) and see if they can help you. I lived in LaGrange until 1949 when I joined the military, and I stop everytime I go through there. A lot of my "kin" are from there (Troup and Heard Counties- Lipham, Meacham, Boyd, Heard, Hill, Lancaster, etc). Listowner Hilda: Will the people get it twice if I just "CC" the list? I just want it to get to the specific addressee and also to the list as I just might pick up some information that way <grin>. I shall place my ancestors on the list as soon as I get it all together and then hope for the best. Please advise.
