    1. thecokers@juno.com: [GATROUP-L] Restricting subscriptions
    2. Hi, Hilda, I'm sending my original posting as you said you missed it. I suppose my point is that if I had to join the list now, I would have no way of doing so. I know no one in Troup to recommend me! I would have missed the invaluable information I've gotten, and the folks I've "met" would miss the info I have to offer. I, too, am a member of several lists and have had nothing but wonderful experiences. I do understand your reluctance to put all us "good guys" in potentially unpleasant situations, but I, for one, am willing to have to delete anything distasteful I might run across in exchange for some info from a person living in California who has no "sponsor" because her family has been gone from Troup for three generations. No one from Troup is going to meet her in the local library or at the genealogical society meeting! I really believe we'll miss a lot of opportunities if the only people with whom we can exchange information must already have some sort of "in" with a list subscriber. I know you have a hard job, Hilda. The thought of dealing with all these computer-related issues boggles my mind. So, please know that I appreciate your toiling for the sake of genealogy! Am I understanding this correctly? If I am, it strikes me as a tad elitist and has the definite potential of limiting the usefulness of the list. Please clarify why you are making this policy change. Confess I'm a little naive. From what danger are you trying to protect us? You also seem worried that people have joined the list and not yet posted a message. Another list I'm on actually encourages the new subscriber to "lurk" (their wording, not mine) for a while and see how the list works before posting. Want to add my thanks to those of others. This list has already netted me considerable help, and I appreciate all the time and effort it takes to keep it running smoothly. 3. Lets all give a big welcome to Joyce Day. Joyce's connection to Troup county was Moses Day who married Celia Reynolds They lived in Lagrange 1840 - 1850 Joyce has a very nice web site located at http://web2.airmail.net/jaau/index.htm Very impressive site Joyce, I just briefly visited it. Welcome to GATROUP, we look forward to sharing our knowledge with you. Hilda

By making this list almost invisible, you are going to miss out on a lot of potentially useful information. But you are the listowner and if you want to be a dictator, it is your ball game. Melvin

    3. Hilda, In other groups that I've participated in (although not genealogy ones--this is my first for that) it's okay to "lurk" for a while. I was not comfortable jumping in right away. I'm sure each group is unique and different and I wanted to get a sense of the group first (how the group posted, etc..). With some groups, there are certain expectations and unwritten ground rules. I like the idea of the list owner sending a welcoming message to the interested party asking their connection and explaining the nature of the group. This would indeed make participation easier for newcomers. If you don't want people "lurking" (eventhough they just may be observing and learning), you should make that clear in the beginning--that you expect full participation. I myself think it's okay to "lay-low" and drink it all in. And I also fully agree with you and Bev--I greatly appreciate the nature of this group as far as respectfulness and kindness (in stark contrast to the rude and mean behavior you have encountered in other groups). I appreciate all your efforts as well as those of Rootsweb to filter all unwanted spam. Just yesterday a porn spam message came through on my email(a first for me with Erols). So, I would be in favor of having the same set-up as the other surname group you are in. Thanks for all your hard work. --Cindy

    1. [GATROUP-L] My Opinion
    2. Bernard & Bev Barnes
    3. Let me try this again, I don't know what I did on the first note I sent out. I don't have as much geneaolgy in Troup County as many of the others, but until I find out all the information I can on my couple (Robert Woods, Jr. and Sarah Harbuck), I want to belong to mail list that are serious about genealogy. I have belonged to mail list where, as Hilda says, they say hateful things to each other and are downright mean. I don't have time in my life for people like that. We seem, so far to have very nice people on this list that want to do genealogy and help each other. If that means we need to keep it as is, then so be it. As long as people are able to go through Hilda, then I see no problem, this of course is just my opinion. I want to thank Carole and all those in the future. I love this group and I hope that maybe I can help others while being helped. I have met alot of nice people and "cousins" on the good list and this is one of the best. Thanks Bev

    3. I probably don't have as much genealogy in Troup County as some do, but until I find out all I can on my couple (Robert Woods and Sarah Harbuck) I would like to belong to groups that are serious about genealogy. I have belonged to mail list where, as Hilda says, there is hateful things said back and forth and where I have received porno type e-mail. I believe as long as people are able to contact Hilda to join there is no problem, this of course is my opinion. I try and help others when I can and I have been helped many times by others. That's the fun of genealogy-meeting other people and learning more about your family. I have been lucky enough to "meet" some very nice people and cousins. This list seems to have the cream of the crop in nice people. I want to say thanks to Carole and all those in the future. Thanks, Bev

    3. Hilda, I just wanted to put my two cents worth in... I am also a member of the list that was sent the porn message. When irate members responded, the sender got their E-mail address from the response which led to further mailings. I just used my "Delete" key. I appreciate your effort to monitor this list - now we can get down to what we are here for - genealogy! Thank you! 1. [GATROUP-L] Explanation
    2. Hilda
    3. Let me try to explain to you what I am doing. As I have said before, I am a member of several boards. GATROUP is very dear to me and I don't want what happend on one of the boards I am on to happen to this one or to any of you. First of all let me say Rootsweb stops most spam messages before they ever get to the list. They have a program which detects this type of mail and usually stops it before it gets through. Everytime someone joins this board I get a message telling me they just subscribed or unsubscribed and they are automatically added to the list. My closing the subscription list means when that message comes to me I have to go in the owners file and add them to the list. One board I am on does this, and then he/sends a message to the board announcing this person has joined, and everyone on the board welcomes them. But before he does that he sends this person a special message asking them How they are connected, and to give him the basics. Boy did I mess up I gave him my great great great as my great. He wrote back and ask me if I enjoyed my birthday cards from the president, and did I possibly make a mistake. It makes the new member feel that they have joined a great list, and they are very comfortable from the beginning, and jump right in. This is a surname list so it's a little bit differnet in the fact that we are all looking for the same name. What brought me to make this decision is another board that I was on, we are not even sure who the list owner is. People join and leave very quickly. Some people are very rude to the others when they do post. The other night someone posted a porno post which was very offensive. When you know who is on the list they are not likely to do this type of thing. Sometimes when people post, people ask for money before they send them the information, when the person sends it they never get the information. That's one reason its a good idea to direct your post to the board and share the information the first couple of times. I am a strong beliver that it Jane Doe makes a special trip to the library or archives and spends a couple of hours looking up Aunt Ethel and Uncle Homer, and offers to mail you the documents that you should offer to reimburse her for postage and copies. I believe you join the Genealogy Society in the area you are searching. (I will post a good reason why on this later). I have already joined four societies and the Troup County Historic Society is next on my list. Although I can't attend the meeting, at least my membership hopefully will help support the research fund. If you place a post on this list and someone asks for money, please let me know immediately. When you are searching a site and you find someone who is looking for someone in Troup County, invite that person to join the list. The way we do this is Hey everyone while at the library or archives, I met this person and they are looking for Aunt Gertrude, she lived in West Point in 1890, I told her about our group and she would love to be a member her email address is. I will send her a personal invitation or add her to the list immediately. I want us to grow into one of the biggest and best list on rootsweb. I am going to leave it up to you, If you want me to keep it open I will, There are only a few people who have not identified themselves and my question is why are they here? PLEASE PLEASE DROP ME A LINE TO LET ME KNOW HOW YOU FEEL some of you already have. This should mean we have 52 post to read. I will go with the majority so please post to the board. Two more things. I missed Suzanne's post, would someone please resend it to the board. Let's give Carole a big THANKS along with your post for all those look ups she has been doing. Thanks Hilda

    3. Hello! Thanks for your message, Suzanne. I confess I've been "lurking"! This is all new to me so I wanted to get a feel for things before jumping in. I'm so thankful that I joined the group early since I don't know anyone that would be able to recommend me. I live in Elkridge, Maryland and genealogy is a hobby--I don't have any genealogy connections yet! My grandmother, Vesta Winn McLaney was born and raised in LaGrange. I have so many fond memories of our family vacations there staying with my great-aunt, Alice Winn Mount in the family homeplace on Morgan Street (and swimming at Callaway's pool). I loved hearing my grandmother's stories of growing up in LaGrange with her 7 brothers and sisters (how she hated to hear the Confederate veterans go on-and-on with their war stories, going to church at First Baptist, visiting her GrandMa Page's farm to watch ribbon cane harvesting, making ice-cream...). I was raised on these rich, colorful stories--she passed down a deep love for LaGrange although I haven't been back since my last great-aunt Julia Winn Jones died many years ago. Our family homeplace is now gone and I am told a highway is there now. Here are my Troup County connections: Vesta Liza WINN (1904-1988) was born in LaGrange, moved to Arlington, Va in the 1930's. Married John Max McLaney 1927 (they met in LaGrange learning telegraph operating). Vesta's parents were Gabriel Frank WINN (1869-1913) and Martha John PAGE (1870-1952)--both of her parents were from Troup County. Gabriel Frank WINN's parents were John Wesley WINN (born c1811 in Baldwin County, GA-1889) married Eliza Ann FOSTER (1831-1917) in 1845 in Monroe County, GA. They moved to Troup County soon after 1845. John served in Georgia militia for Creek War. Martha John PAGE's parents were William Dugat PAGE (c1835-1909) served Co B 7th Arkansas Infantry, CSA, wounded Chicamauga and recuperating in the hospital (First Baptist Church) in LaGrange where he met a "nurse", Margaret V. GOODE (1844-1916) and married her 1864. They lived on Margaret's family farm outside of town. Information after these ancestors is very hazy. Any information on the GOODE and WINN families would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for this group--it's very interesting and gives me a connection to my "roots" way up here in Maryland!! --Cindy Nicewarner

    3. Hi all, I sent this message to Cindy and then I realized I should have sent it to the entire group. We welcome donations of family stories, photos, and genealogical materials. Adding them to our files is another way of sharing the information with future generations. K Hi, I'm Kaye L. Minchew, Director of the Troup County Archives. I enjoyed your comments about spending time in LaGrange. Someday we'd love for you to write down these stories and send us a copy for our files! We are on Main Street, one block west of Morgan Street and indeed it is a highway with no houses. We'd love to have a photo of the house if you have one. "Fair use" allows non-infringing copyinf of a copyrighted work for such purposes as comment, criticism, news reporting, teaching, scholarship or research. In determining whether such use is fair, courts consider: 1. whether the purpose is commercial or non-commercial. 2. the nature of the work 3. the amount used in relation to the whole work. 4. the effect of the use on the market or value of the work. In general, copying a small amount of a work is considered fair unless it is the heart of the work. You, Genealogy, and Copyright. The copyright laws affect both the research and the publication of your genealogy, either a narrative family history or a simple pedigree family line. first, though, consider that the basic facts about your ancestor's life (such as name, birth date and place, marriage partner, date and place, and death date and place) do not receive copyright protection, no matter their source. Whether you went to the county courthouse, rented a microfilm of the relevant records, or found the data in a commercial CD-ROM, the basic facts of a person's life may be freely copied; they are in the public domain. But adding any kind of narration to these basic facts gives rise to a copyright in the creative portion of the work. The more narrative, the stronger the copyright. If you are the author, you should take care to mark your work to give the proper notice. If it is a large or major work consider registering it and depositing a copy in the Library of Congress. On the other hadn, if you find narrative material in a good family source, you should take care not to violate the rights of the author. Remember the idea of "Fair Use," mentioned above, before using more than a sentence or two, seek out the author and get permission. Do not assume that just because you have a copy of a story, you can copy it again or incorporate it into your family's history. If the author is dead, genealogists - - of all researches - - are unable to use the excuse that they couldn't locate the heirs to seek copyright clearance! Simple pedigree charts are not copyrightable, despite their markings, even when filled in with facts. But add a "modicum of creativity" and you can claim copyright protection in a pedigree chart. The same goes fro computerized pedigree data, either in disk form or in a GEDCOM file. Thanks JP for clearing this up for me and allowing me to post it.
