Hi everyone and welcome again to our new members, and thank you to all who have responded to our issue. Yesterday a friend of mine brought me a Genealogy column from the Leesburg, Florida paper. This is a small town and the paper is published bi-weekly. The column is written by Jeannette Phethean and is titled "On Kinseekers", she has some very iteresting articles. In this issue she reviewed two books "Sumter County Alabama Wills: 1827-1872 by Gwendolyn Lynette Hester" She stated that this is a very good source for people searching that area. The other book which is of interest to us. It is "Cherokee by Blood, volume 9 by Jerry Wright Jordan". Jerry is a member of the Wright List that I belong to, (another good list). I sent him an email telling him about the clipping and am mailing it to him today. We chatted back and forth for a couple of emails and Jerry told me that his grandmother Wright's, maiden name was Hendon, she was born in Cowetta County Ga. but her parents grew up in TROUP COUNTY. Small world isn't it. In the article Mrs. Phethean states "Cherokee By Blood, Volume 9 of a series, deals with the records of eastern Cherokee Ancestry in the U.S. Court of Claims 1906-1910, compiled by Jerry Wright Jordan, and published by Heritage Books Inc. These books will be sought after for the major help they offer in tracing Cherokee ancestry. The series follows families through all the claims filed by people individually, and organizes them so that you can locate the files for cousins as well as siblings, and compare their applications, in the hope that you will be able to make a family connection. The stories contained in the applications are so detailed that you can follow the journey of the applicant through his whole life. Grievances over treaties, filed by the Cherokee, were recognized by the courts, and more than a million dollars in reparations was awarded. To determine who should get the money, Guion Miller investigated the claims of more than 45,000 Cherokee. Many were rejected for various reasons, and these files became the basis for the books. The original report was microfilmed but it is very hard to use, the author of this book has tried to put together the claims of relatives and has kept the file numbers with each application, so that it is possible to tie families together. The stories in the applications are engrossing, and it's easy to understand the difficulites of deciding on the rightful applicants. Names, places, and relationships given in the applications may help to identify a Cherokee ancestor, or occasionally to refute the claim of Indian blood. Whether the claim was accepted or rejected these books can be helpful in locating Indian connections. If you know the number of the application of an ancestor, you can choose the book which deals with that application in a Heritage books catalog in the Leesburg library. "Cherokee By Blood", any of the nine volumes may be ordered from Heritage Books, Inc. 1540-E Pointer Ridge Place, Suite 300, Bowie Md. 20716. Each volume is $36 plus $4 shipping costs. Credit cards, money orders or checks are welcome. End For those of you searching your Indian Heritage, you may want to go to the Library or Archives to check out the catalogue to see which volume deals with your family and order it for your personal Library while they are still available. Hi guys and gals. Thank each and everyone of you for voicing your opinions. There are still a few we have not heard from yet, but lets give them time, I keep remembering (believe it or not) I was afraid to post. I am however very glad I did, because I would not know all of you. I am going to continue welcoming the new people before they come on board. The reason is I think it makes that it gives the new person a feeling they are joining a very special group and they are. It also gives me a little more free time, because I know that their address is correct and don't spend all my time trying to reach them at an incorrect mail box address when their messages start bouncing. If I don't reach them by replying to it, then there is an error, and it gives me more time to research. As far a people learning about us, that's up to us. When you are searching the web and run accoss a site that has the words Troup County Ga in it or on your other lines invite that person to join us. We are also listed on the rootsweb list under Georgia and a couple of other places. Now back to basics. Let's welcome another new member. Lisa Warren. Lisa has no relatives in Troup County or isn't even searching there. She is observing us, because she is thinking about starting a list for her surnames. She and I met through the Copeland board we have not connected yet, but have really become good friends. If you remember the fires, one night the 3 of July the fires were so bad they were evacuating area's and new fires were starting everywhere. The smoke was so heavy that the smell was coming into the house through the A/C system. Two fires had started and were put out quickly within ten miles of my house that day. Needless to say I was scared. I got on the computer and Lisa was there, I replied to her message and she and I talked back and forth for quite a while. She help me settle down and relax. So let's give her a hearty welcome and show her how much fun we can have and how informative we can be. Now for the exciting news. Besure to read the next post carefully. I am very excited about who I talked with last night or should I say emailed. Hilda
I'm Awb Norris and have been into this genealogy business since Feb of this year. A true neophyte. I thought I should post before I got booted off, so here goes. I was born in Roanoke, AL in 1929. Moved to LaGrange (and with my family) at age of 5. Spent several years in the Dixie Cotton Mill Community, then to West Point, Georgia in 1939. Remained in West Point (also Troup County) until 1951 when I entered the U. S. Army. Now retired from the Army and am a consultant in Computer Technology and teach Internet Classes here in the Orlando area. I am a Norris, married to a Harper. In fact, the Norris family is having a reunion in LaGrange, GA today, but I was unable to attend. Our family search is for Stewart, Stevens (Stephens--in Chambers CO AL), Still (also Chambers CO), Harper (primarily Birmingham, AL), Norris, Gray, and Dollar. These families were primarily in the Randolph County, AL area in the 1800's. Many of the Norris, Gray, and Dollar ancestors are buried in Randolph County. Will be delighted to share any information with you at any time. Nice to be with you. It appears to be a fruitful group for information. If you desire any information, please send your snail mail address so I can forward hardcopy if necessary. Looking forward to hearing from you. My best to all. Have a great weekend. Hi everyone just a quick to let you know that I just got a message from Tim Pierce at Rootsweb and they are down. Some mail has been back logged, they don't think it is lost. They hope to have it back up by midnight tonight. Hilda
Hilda, All of your messages are getting thru I have seen quite a few posting on the subject of subscribing. I want to thank you so very much for all that you have done and all that you are trying to do for this list. I don't have a strong connection to TROUP county as of yet, but I love reading all your little history stories about the county. The surnames I am trying to find out about in troup county are BARNHILL and WALSTON. Any one with any info on either of these families I would love to exchange info with. I will send more detailed info on these families in a later posting. I have to dig out my notes and find the marriage dates of these families. Once again your postings are getting thru and I believe you are doing a great job. Everyone (including the people on the list) has to get used to the relationship. Got to go, I'm late for an appt. But please don't abandon your well filled post. THANKS, Carole
Is anyone working on the Talley and Formby families that were in Troup Co. with their families by @ 1835? Will share info. Thanks Mary AEJA41A@prodigy.net

I am a question, I don't think my posts are getting through. This time would some one please acknowledge that that got this post. Restricting the list does not affect the way you subscribe or unsubscribe. Anyone that subscribes to the list a message is sent to me telling me that email address has subscribed or unsubscribed to the list. That's how I know that you are there. By closing that switch, I can respond to this persons notice ask them why they are joining or who they are searching. When they reply I can then pass their name on to you let you know they have joined then you can welcome them to the list. Which would be very nice if each of us would do. It helps that person who is reluctant to post, feel welcome and some will jump in a little quicker. I am assuming that no one is getting my post since when I do post something no one acknowledges it. Anyone who has been on this list will always be welcome, if you leave for any reason I will let resubscribe you immediately upon your request. I started a roster for quick reference, and ask all of you in what format you would like to see it. I guess no one wants it as there has been no mention of it. So I have dropped this project. I want each and everyone of you to feel this is your list. I am just volunteering to maintain it for you. Without your help, there is not much more I can do. I don't want to even say this, but I am ready to be the silent list manager read your posts and never respond. Without your input I don't know what else to do. Hilda

That's the way it works. One thing I learned last night that has always puzzled me and another one on this list, is that sometimes you will find yourself unscribed from a list and not even know it. The reason this is that rootsweb is managed by smart list. Smart list will bounce messages that have incorrect mailboxes addresses, as I am sure many of you have had them returned to you and not know why. Each list owner sets amount of bounces it will accept before smart list rejects that address. If you go away an your mailbox fills up (most will hold 200 around messages) smartlist will bounce you from the list. When an address is bounced I get a copy of the bounced message. Six people gone away mailboxed filled 36 messages to me that they are bouncing, Plus the posts to the board can very quickly fill up mine). We have had two to request to join that have been bounced by smart list. I cannot reach them by email because of an error in typing their address. (If someone evers tell you that they tried to get on but didn't make it please ask them to check the way they typed their return address). If you come home one day and you have been bounced, just drop me a line and let me know. Smartlist does not tell you that you have been bounded, only when you unsubscribe will you be notified that you have left the list. If you are going to be gone a few days and are a member of a several lists then change to the digest mode, it helps to keep from being bumped. Or post a note to the board, that you are working on a project and will be away from the computer a few days. That alerts me that you still want to be here and if your are bounced I will put you right back on. Hope this explains bouncing a little better. Hilda

Hi Hilda, This is my first for being placed on a mailing list. I am just beginning to learn how it works. I guess I did something right when I sent in my query for the LIPHAMS in Troup Co. My question is: How do I get access to queries already sent and how do new subscribers read mine ? My closing the subscription list means when that message comes to me I have to go in the owners file and add them to the list. One board I am on does this, and then he/sends a message to the board announcing this person has joined, and everyone on the board welcomes them. But before he does that he sends this person a special message asking them How they are connected, and to give him the basics. Boy did I mess up I gave him my great great great as my great. Hilda, I assume you are attempting to protect the list from "spamming" by outside individuals. Other lists have been able to do this without restricting membership, but I do not know how. Since I subscribe to quite a few lists, and I travel a great deal, I subscribe and unsubscribe to lists fairly often to keep my e-mail under control. I guess it would be more difficult to do that in a restricted list. Just tossing this out for your consideration. It seems to me that the more open the participation, the more we will learn. Barbara
Hello everyone, I've been reading the posts about the changes in how to subscribe to the Troup Co. list. I don't believe (correct me if I'm wrong) that membership is meant to be "by invitation only." Anyone can subscribe in the normal fashion, they just need to submit their information to Hilda. The purpose is not to "screen" or exclude anyone, it's only so that no one remains anonymous. That seems to make all the members less vulnerable to personal attacks & generally nasty posting from anyone. I belong to quite a few lists. Because of the volume of posts that I receive, all of them, including Troup Co. are in digest mode except for one. That means that I do a great deal of "lurking" just to see if I can find a connection. It is a good idea to submit names of people for whom you're searching when you first join. You never know, there might be an immediate response from someone. If, after that first post to introduce yourself, you're bounced from the list due to inactivity, aka lurking, just resubscribe. At least, that's my understanding of how it all works. Hilda, you'll have to correct me if I'm mistaken in anything. I really enjoy all the member's posts here. This is a really great list, & you're doing a great job, Hilda. Barbara, searching for BROWN, SMITH, HARRIS, KILGORE, TRAYLOR, BARNETT, SCOTT
Would anyone know anything of the ancestry of Leonidas Cohron and John Cohron listed in the 1840 census? Both families moved to Alabama, where they are listed in the 1850 census of Chambers Co. Leonidas was apparently dead by then, his wife Eliza Jane and their children (Nicholas, John, Amanda, Leonidas, and Nancy) appearing in census without Leonidas, Sr. The surname is listed as Cochran at that time and there a number of other families of same name in Chambers Co in 1850. I'm wondering if Leonidas Sr. was related to one of those families. Eliza Jane would remarry a Thomas Sellers and be in Henry County, AL by 1860. Thanks, Ron Hall

Do as you think best, Hilda. I do not want to receive a lot of spam mail, and I am very grateful that Rootsweb has been able to screen most of this kind of messages. It is unfortunate that one slips by occasionally. Mina Clark Bickerstaff in Fort Worth, Texas MinaMB@juno.com MinaMB@aol.com for attachments
