Hi really hate to post to the list but have a friend who wants to join the list and Hilda's mail keeps bouncing. Is anyone else having this problem or is something wrong with Hilda's email? Sorry to post this to the list but Hilda my messages to you bounce back. Please email me when you get a chance. Joan Thanks Gang, I appreciate your patience.
Just a couple questions I hope you all can help me with. I've been away from Troup County for a long time and I'm pretty rusty on the resources there. I have a copy (from my grandmother) of Clifford Smith's History of Troup County (1933). Lynda mentioned just receiving Vol I & II of History of Troup County. Then I see at the Troup County Archives web site that F.C. Johnson has published Histories of Troup County Vol I & III (by the way, what happended to Vol II?). This is getting confusing! Could someome please explain all this to me? And Carole, when you sent out your info from Troup County history, which book did it come from? Also, I see at the Archives' web site that there is a Troup County Cemetries book available. Is this just a book version of the cemetary records on-line at the archives' site? Maybe a bibliography of Troup County printed resources would be a good idea to send out (much like the County information Hilda sent out earlier). I have Research in Georgia compiled by Robert Scott Davis, Jr published in 1981 which I'm sure is really out of date (although it was invaluable to me when it first came out). I know we are all searching and it would help to have a better understanding of the available resources. I haven't had time to search to see if there is a library in LaGrange that has an on-line catalog. I know the public libraries in Maryland are on-line which has helped me a lot in my research on my Maryland family lines. Thanks for all your help! Cindy P.S. I have a copy of the Early Marriages in Troup County book. Does anyone have PEOPLE OF ANTEBELLUM TROUP COUNTY, GA. by F.C. Johnson, III or ESTATE RECORDS OF TROUP COUNTY, GEORGIA, 1827-1850, compiled by Randall Allen and Danny Knight? (I used to subscribe to the Troup County genealogy magazine/newsletter that Danny Knight published a long time ago!!)? These books look interesing to me and I was wondering if they are useful.
Our experience with requesting anything from the State of Georgia is that you have to send a $25.00 fee up front which is not returnable if they do not find anything, and quite often, that is the case. So if you know anyone who can help you in the area, by all means, use that route. MinaMB@juno.com MinaMB@aol.com for attachments
Does anyone have a listing of Cemeteries in Troup Co. Looking for graves of my grandparents. Russell William Holder & Margaret Eugenia Smith Holder , both died in 1907. Their obit reads that their body was taken to West Point for interment.
Hilda and everyone: I am also researching the Lipham families that JoAnn is referencing below. I would appreciate if any of you have any information to send to JoAnn, you would also include me as we are "cousins" and are helping each other out in any way we can. I was going to post this request on the list, however, have been so busy that JoAnn "beat" me to it. Hi, All, Looking for info re JAMES S. PORTER b.? d. 1843 in Troup. Gwinnett 1830 Census shows he had living with him 1 son bet. 1+5 years (JOHN POWELL PORTER, b. 1828) 1 son bet. 10+15 years 1 daughter bet. 1+5 years 1 daughter bet 10+15 years 1 male bet 20+30 --assume was JAMES S. PORTER 1 female bet 20+30--assume was his wife 1 male bet 60+70--assume father of James or his wife Then JAMES must have moved to Troup before his death in 1843. His wife, name unknown, must have pre-deceased him, for Wills of Troup show a CORNELIUS P. MARCHMAN, Adminstrator of his estate , filing returns concerning JAMES S. PORTER's orphan daughter CHARITY ANN PORTER from April 01, 1843 until the final return for 1848, filed on January 27, 1849. This final return still lists: Orphan: CHARITY ANN PORTER and now adds: Legatee: JOHN P. PORTER. I know JOHN P. (POWELL) PORTER was born Jan 16, 1828, so he would have just turned 21 in January, 1849--when last return was filed. So, I suppose he was now able to take over the care of CHARITY ANN PORTER, his younger sister. My questions are: -- Does anyone know cemetery CHARITY PORTER is buried in? Troup Cemetery Records show she died in 1842, buried in a Church or Family Cem. Assume this was wife of JAMES S. PORTER, since this CHARITY PORTER died a year before he did, so is obviously not Charity Ann Porter. My guess is she died giving birth to daughter CHARITY ANN. --How would I go about finding who cared for CHARITY ANN PORTER and JOHN POWELL PORTER before he reached his majority in 1849? --Does anyone have any info on CORNELIUS P. MARCHMAN? --Any ideas how I'd find out what happened to the other children in the family who were shown on the 1830 Gwinnett Census? Sorry to be so long-winded. Hilda, don't know who's attacking you, but keep the faith. You're doing a great job! Welcome all you new members, I'm JudyB from Washington State. When you live this far away, you learn to really depend on you southerners. I was born in Randolph Co., Al, but have been away for 35 years. I have been looking for info on my ggrandfather Oliver Jasper Norred for a long time. I know obvious things about him, b., d. were he's buried, but I can't seem to find much history on him. I know that he lived in Troup Co., LaGrange, for several years before he died in 1957. He lived with a son, named (Jesse, I think) Hershel Norred. I remember going to Uncle Hershel's place of business when I was a very small child. I believe it might have been a tavern or something like that. Is Troup Co a 'wet county? I might be mistaken about his business, I just can't remember. I'd love to make contact with some of Uncle Hershel's family, as I am pretty sure that they still live in LaGrange. I wrote for my GG's obit. and sent $2.00 to cover expense, someone told me that would be enough. A few days later I got the copy of the obit and my $2.00 back, with a very nice note from the lady at the newspaper office, she was very happy to help me. They are really nice folks down there. The obit didn't have much info for me, no siblings, wives, or parents. I'm hoping that his death certificate might have more info for me. I recently got a death certificate for someone that passed away about ten years ago at Health dept. in LaGrange, but I've been told that I have to get my gg's from the state of GA. Is that because it's been so long since his death? Does anyone know. I have several to order, and would like to know how the certificates are filed. Thanks everyone for you help. JudyB
Hilda, Have received my copy of "Histories of LaGrange and Troup County, GA" Volume I & II and am delighted. I have found information on the VEALE/TATUM family that my fellow researchers across the US and I had not known, as well as information on the elusive surnames in my family tree such as SCOTT, BROWN, VANCE and LESTER. On page 520 of that book is the following: REUBEN R. VEALE b. 1773 d. 10-14-1839 Troup Co. buried behind the old Nathan Graves Swanson place on Vernon Road, way up in the woods, left a will in Troup Co. He named his brother JOHN M. VEALE and John's son REUBEN HENRY VEALE; a sister ELIZABETH VEALE HARRISON; and a sister NANCY VEALE FRAZIER. Please let me know how to get a copy of Reuben R. Veale's will and if anyone knows who the father of Reuben was. NATHAN VEAL, SR. removed from VA. to Deepstep, Washington Co, GA. He is the first to drop the "e" from the end of his surname. I would like to find out if he is related to Reuben Veale. Nathan Veal, Sr. is my husband's ancestor. Thanks for all you have done. You are doing a great job. Lynda (Tatum) Veal
Guys I am personally being attacked for wanting to help people learn about their history. I sorry those of you who really want to learn about your ancestors have to see this. But I think you all know what group its coming from. Maybe someday they will give up and go away. I don't know who all of them are, but from now on I will not give them the satifaction of acknowledging they are even there. Any thing I say will be used against me or twisted to make it look bad. But guess what I won't quit. So please please continue to show us who you are, and that you are not here to help but to cause trouble, it is kind of funny. Thank you
Hi everyone great posts! Thanks to all of you and lets keep them rolling. I didn't have time to do any research this weekend so don't have anything to post new tonight. Rootsweb is still acting up. I guess we are lucky that ours are getting through. I have a couple of more deadlines to meet at work, and hopefully then will able to get back to finding some interesting aritcle for us soon. Hilda
Carole, Thanks for the Info. Yes, Frank Winn was my great uncle and WD Page was my great-great grandfather. Not sure about E.T. Winn connection. Aprecciate the help. Cindy
Do any of you have access to obits for the LaGrange, Troup Co., GA area? If so, are you available for lookups? Rootsweb continued to have problems over the weekend so there is a backlog of mail but it is starting to come through. Glad to see all these posts comming in. Welcome again to our new members. As you can see we are all still new, so I welcome any comments or suggestions you have to better the list. However, it seems that old issues keep popping up. So I am going to add one more guideline to help us avoid conflicts of this nature. People who only seem to post about negative issues, or keep making unwarranted comments about a list member will simply be removed from the list. This is one reason lists fail before they have a chance to begin and has no merit on genealogy. Our list is about Troup County, so if you are unhappy about another group or organization, take it to that group leader or the organization. Thanks Hilda
