    2. My Florida ancestors also had an affiliation with Thomasville- They came to FL in the 1850's however two of the brothers ended up in Thomasville for a while after the Civil War and one married a girl from Thomasville - the couple returned up there for the birth of their first child. They did settle in FL though. Denise

I did have family members who left South Georgia for Florida. This particular couple I think stayed in Georgia as my father was born in Irwin County, Georgia in 1932. And my grandmother died in Augusta in 1936. Stories were that they worked in turpentine fields in the Osierfield area. My grandmother's family remained and are buried in the Boston area. I will keep plugging away as I have been doing for several years, but I will absolutely check Florida records more thoroughly. Thanks again, Joany

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0d.2ADE/1439.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Some more thoughts... Many, many, MANY South Georgians sought economic opportunity in South Florida in that era... and as they did, there were so many of them there they tended to continue to socialize with family and friends from South Georgia. The era from 1926 till 1942 or so wasn't as favorable because first the Florida Boom burst, then came the Great Depression on its heels... but there still may have been better opportunities in South Florida than in South Georgia. If nothing else... bootlegging during Prohibition was pervasive enough in South Florida to help stimulate the whole economy there to some degree... <G> Also, roads and railroads had been and were being opened up into South Florida, and transit back and forth to South Georgia became almost casual by comparison with earlier eras when it was often necessary or at least pretty much preferable to take ship. By pure accident I found land ownership records of great uncles that I thought never left South Georgia, in Broward County, Florida. Who knows why their time there was never mentioned to me...? No, I'm not implying that they were involved in bootlegging, because if they had been that would probably have been mentioned. I know of several distant relatives who were reputed to have been involved in one way or another, including one who apparently actually crewed smuggling vessels. But not these guys...

Boston is about as close to Quitman, Madison & Monticello as to Thomasville, so you could look at marriage records for Brooks Co., GA and Jefferson & Madison Cos. in FL. But that's just guessing. Can you ask someone who might know...? If I didn't know my parents were married in Levy Co., FL, I would probably never have found out. They were both directly or indirectly from Grady County, GA, and both lived in Lee Co., FL... but they got married in Bronson one weekend while dad was on a weekend pass from Camp Blanding, Clay Co., FL. They met in Gainesville, Alachula, Co., and took a taxi to Levy Co., which is quite a considerable distance... and in no way connected to anywhere that either of them ever lived. In other words... you might have to keep looking in an ever-widening circle, and you still might not find out if the courthouse wherever they were married has since burned... or if the record was somehow lost, etc.

    1. William Ward
    2. Molly, the nearest I can come to your William Ward is this: My 3ggrandfather, William Ward was b. ca. 1753, N. C. His will was written in Sampson County, N.C. He d. 1835/1836 but I'm not sure where. His daughter, Pricilla m. my 2ggrandfather Matthew White and they moved to Thomas County, Ga. It's possible that William followed them to Thomas County, but I have no proof. I have this William Ward's will which proves that he had a son named William but I have no further info on the son. It is very possible that the son is the William that you're searching for. Lois Cone Favor
