HALL in the 1900 census living in Thomas Co., Cairo District. He's listed as a "woods rider," and after some Net research I'm wondering if that could be for the turpentine industry in South GA. Does anyone know if there were turpentine camps in this area in 1900? What were the names of the businesses & where would records be? Additionally, does anyone have ideas for what a "woods rider" might be otherwise? The only alternative I can think of is a "circuit rider," i.e. traveling preacher on horseback, or perhaps forest service work, although I don't know if there was a govt. forest service back then. Any ideas? Thank you, Liz Hall

This particular program is recognized by Virus Scans as HideWinow.exe. It is a program that is added to your PC so that the hacker can gain access to it. This is what My Virus program has about it.... "This detection covers many different versions of a "potentially unwanted application" referred to as "HideWindow". "HideWindow" is a utility that will run a program while hiding its user's interface. Although there are many valid uses for such a program, many trojan packages make use of this tool to run standard programs, such as FTP servers, mIRC, etc, while hiding them from the display. The detection of this type of files is not automatically activated. Users who would like to check for the presence of this kind of files on their system should run the command line scanner with the /PROGRAM switch. Please note that VirusScan 7 has also an option, which enables users to detect this kind of program automatically (see below). This type of detection also exists within e250/e500 Webshield filtering devices." ==============================================

Jennifer, My virus program immediately flagged this as a "potentially unwanted program" and would not open it afterwards. I did a full scan on my PC and came back with two quarantined files. I have already cleaned them off my machine but remember them pretty well.............one was attached to a shortcut that I use often and connected to the program FondleWindows.exe and both were found in the virus definitions using the words HideWindow virus found. It is so important to make darn sure your Virus portection is current at all times, but equally important to be sure that Windows and your Firewalls are also up to date at all times. These people are getting smarter everyday, and there is precious little anyone can do. This was a really sick thing to do to people who can little afford to replace equipment. I just tried to alert others to the problem here. Re: GREAT NEW SITE TO FIND YOUR ANCESTORS Hello Everyone, After just posting a response that I now realize may have been mis-directed, let me please remind all of us on the list: RootsWeb.com has a business arrangement with Ancestry.com and, as a result, many RootsWeb mailing lists receive "gatewayed" copies of posts to Ancestry.com bulletin boards. This is the "default" behavior, and about a year ago the subscribers to this list unofficialyl voted to maintain this default behavior rather than have me reject the messages by default. At the time that I last asked, the general thinking was that "more was better" and that we as a body of subscribers would be responsible to ourselves to wade through and individually judge the veracity of the messages posted to/from the gatewayed web sites. It is all-too-easy to become confused about the source/topic of information posted to the list ... as I suspect I was just a few minutes ago. :-) Despite my personal confusion, I stand by my previous post: As a computing professional and long-time amateur genealogist, I DO despise both spam and spyware. However, as your list administrator, I also stand by the decision of the body of GATHOMAS list subscribers to allow the gatewayed posts to be forwarded to our mailing list in the event that it might help even one of us to make a new connection or learn something new about the home-places of our ancestors. Still, I must gently remind the body of subscribers that accepting the gatewayed posts offers us the potential for irritation and misinformation as well as the potential for genealogical progress. So whenever a mailing list message says that it is being gatewayed to our mailing list (or is posted in response to such a message), please keep in mind that the original message content comes from someone who is not a fellow list subscriber ... and, well, "caveat emptor." Let me also remind All that we have an *exceptional* group of subscribers here on GATHOMAS -- I wish I could make you understand how good I believe this list is!!! -- and that we all should be careful to look for and consider messages from our subscriber list before those gatewayed from elsewhere. As with any information coming from the online community, please remember to "consider the source." Personally, I highly consider and value information posted here by our fellow listmembers, and often raise an eyebrow at the messages that we read here via gateways ... of course, "Your Mileage May Vary." We, as a body of GATHOMAS Listmembers, previously decided that We are both clever enough and generous enough to filter the messages that appear on our mailing list from external sources. If our previous decision should ever require review, I am sure that YouListFolk will *privately* request that I ask for another public opinion poll, and I hope you trust in me that, given enough requests, I will ask again for your collective opinion. Until then, I'll leave things as they are while reminding myself and everyone else to carefully check the source of messages to the list before even beginning to decide the level of consideration/trust they deserve. Best, Jennifer Jacksonville, FL, USA List Admin: GATHOMAS-L, FLJEFFER-L, FLMADISO-L, ABBOTT-L, STANALAND-L, SPICKARD-L p.s. I am STILL seeking a replacement List Administrator ... if you're interested, please write to me privately ... jennifer@fdn.com ... just think! You could personally reduce the size of random ListAdmin messages by about 300%!!! ;-) If no one volunteers soon, I'll have to put up the list for open adoption. I'd *really* rather that it be taken over by one of our own ... At 10:30 PM 1/9/2004 -0500, you wrote: >I think this is a really SICK thing to do on a list like this? Grey Fox (& All), I didn't realize that! It really upsets me to think that messages "gatewayed" from Ancestry.com (where I'm a paid member) are in any way associated with either "spyware" or "spam"!!! Besides automatic virus protection software, I use both spam filter and spyware detector software that automatically protects me from stuff like that. I consider them as valuable to me as blood-pressure medication!!! If ANY site that's affiliated with a RootsWeb mailing list is causing any sort of problems to subscribers, *PLEASE* write to me and tell me about it so I can do what I can to solve the problem. I'm a computer scientist and network administrator by trade, and I *despise* unsolicited data collection on the web ... so I am both knowledgeable and *more* than willing to help stop anything that hinders our genealogical pursuits and generous exchange of information. I'll help technically via RootsWeb and/or privately via e-mail -- just ask. I truly despise both spam and spyware ... just ask me ... if you have the time to hear about it. :-) Warmest wishes, Jennifer Jacksonville, FL, USA List Admin: GATHOMAS-L, FLJEFFER-L, FLMADISO-L, ABBOTT-L, STANALAND-L, SPICKARD-L At 09:30 PM 1/13/2004 -0500, you wrote: >Problem is that if you opened that site, you now have spy ware on your >computer. Problem is that if you opened that site, you now have spy ware on your computer. Scan your files for anything containing HideWindow in it. Still grinning ... *thanks!* I realize that the messages were "gatewayed" from the web to the list (as per list policy), but must admit that it gauled me to see "advertisement" rather than "volunteerism" appear on our mailing list.
