The Linton family migrated from MD down the coast, had a plantation (Mt PLeasant) in Abbeville, SC. From there Moses Linton & his wife, Lucy Lanier, moved to primeval forest with nothing but Indians in SW Ga. He had over 100 slaves that he eventually freed. They built the Methodist church near Grooversville , some where in time. After the Civil & Indian wars, they retired to Thomasville. Represented Thomas Co. Ga in secession convention that carried Ga into Southern Confederacy. They are a fairly well documented family. He is buried at Laurel Hill. I had no idea if that is Methodist or not, or how close Thomasville is that close to Grooversville.

I'm not saying that is the case... I'm just speculating that. Or it may be because the older maps did not seem to take extreme accuracy as a watchword. For example, if you believed the maps, Cairo wasn't always in Thomas County till Grady County was created... but so far as I know it was. It was also close to the county line... Here's what the U GA site says about Cairo: Cairo Decatur, Thomas, Grady 1839 - Decatur, 1846 - Decatur, 1855 - Decatur, 1863 - Decatur, 1864 - Decatur, 1865 - Decatur, 1874 - Thomas, 1883 - Thomas, 1885b - Thomas, 1895 - Thomas, 1899 - Thomas, 1904 - Thomas, 1910 - (and thereafter) - Grady, 1915, 1952, 1955, 1970a, 1970b current county seat of Grady County But back to the original post... the only old cemetery that I know of at Boston... isn't that at the PRESBYTRIAN Church? And Boston isn't Grooverville... So... I hate to say this, but it looks to me like several different things have been confounded and the whole subject needs to be researched and thought through again. This is something that I am familiar with... having done this sort of muddling things up myself more than once... And the thing with map inaccuracy is enough to drive a saner person than me completely nuts... Richard White Tallahassee, FL

I would also guess that this road is now SR 93 from Hwy 319 to Cairo. I am a Duncanville registered voter. The Duncanville "courthouse" where we used to vote is on this road on the south side just before you get to the Meridian Road. The "courthouse" is about the size of a large walkin closet and we had one voting machine. I loved to brag to friends in town about where I voted. We now vote in the Duncanville Fire House about a mile closer to Cairo. Beachton is now said to be the sight of Duncanville which no longer appears on the maps. It was on the maps at least until 1900. Merridian Road runs east and west through Beachton. Historical Society's cookbook/history book mentioned: "In 1900, Cairo was in Thomas Co., (in 1906, Grady Co. was formed, this included Cairo and all the towns of the stills to follow in story.) I just helped publish a cookbook for Grady County Historical Society and we included more than recipes - remembrances of early times in the county, photos of homes that would have been constructed in early 1900's and other - outhouse, barns, farm equipment, grist mill and various cooking related items (all sketched for the book). We also included a short story on turpentine stills and a tree with cups attached. "Turpentine was made by collecting gum from pine trees and distilling it. ... "There were, at least five "stills" in the county: Harrell's Still (north of Whigham), Peebles' Still (northwest of Cairo), Prince's Still (Spence Community), the still at Pumphrey (northeast of Reno) and Kemp's Still in Cairo (on 1st Ave. S W near the railroad where Campbell Soup was later located, then moved about 2 miles further west but still adjoining the railroad.)" "... [re Prince's Still in Spence]: there is also the commissary [where] the workers would purchase their goods and groceries which is still standing and this building and the home of the Princes is in the cookbook." If I find the woods rider I mentioned is indeed my great-grandfather, I'll certainly get a copy of the book. Thought I'd plug it for anyone following this thread who also had relatives in the turpentine industry. Thanks for the enlightening replies! Liz
