It helps shed some additional light on this Gates family which has been the subject of a considerable amount of research by several descendants. By integrating this with census data, marriage records and information submitted by family members we come up with the following picture which, although incomplete, is an improvement over what was known before. PARENTS: Father’s given name name unknown, mother’s given name Jemima, born about 1790 in Vermont [1850 census]. Father probably died prior to the 1850 census when Jemima resided with her son-in-law and daughter, Samuel A. & Jemima (Gates) Wolcott, in Aurora, Erie County, NY. Jemima Gates was buried in the Oakwood Cemetery, East Aurora, Erie County, NY. The inscription on her gravestone reads “1788-1879.” GATES CHILDREN: 1. LAURA, born about 1813 in Vermont [1850 census of Walpole, Cheshire Co., NH] married April 25, 1836, Elijah H. PROUTY [Brattleboro, VT record]. In 1850 this family resided in Walpole, Cheshire County, New Hampshire. 2. AURILLA or AURELIA, born 1815 in Putney, Vermont [obituary], died in 1904, buried Oakwood Cemetery, East Aurora, Erie County, NY, married in 1833, as his second wife, Isaac ADDINGTON [“History of the City of Buffalo and Erie County, New York” (1884) Perry Smith, Volume VI]. This family resided in Aurora, Erie County, NY. 3. JEMIMA, born March 26, 1817 in Vermont, died November 30, 1893 in Ludlow, Livingston, County, MO, married, about 1839, Samuel A. WOLCOTT, born September 21, 1809, died April 21, 1879 in Ludlow, Livingston County, MO, son of James and Hannah (Bartlett) Wolcott. Family resided in Aurora, Erie County, NY in 1850; Rock County, WI in 1860; and Livingston County, MO in 1870. [Information received in 1987 from Barbara Burner, St. Louis, MO.] 4. ROXANA E., born about 1823 in Putney, VT [1850 census of Rockingham, Windham County, VT] married, November 11, 1846 in Putney, VT, Abner M. CUSHING [town record]. 5. JOHN, born about 1823 in Vermont [1850 census of Brookfield, Madison County, NY], died between July 15, 1852 and October 4, 1853, in Brookfield, Madison County, NY or Aurora, Erie County, NY [estate documents from SAMPUBCO copied by William R. Ladd]. 6. JAMES O. He was almost certainly the James O. Gates of Brattleboro, VT who married August 31, 1845 in Rockingham, Windham County, VT, Elizabeth S. BRYANT [Rockingham, VT record].
