    1. Augustus Gates
    2. I can give you a little on the English Gates family which began with a Puritan migration to Massachusetts Bay Colony aboard the ship MASTER. After spending about 175 years in New England, mostly Massachusetts, Timothy Gates and John Gates helped Rufus Putnam and others to set up Ohio for the white man after the Revolution was won. They were in Marietta, the oldest town in Ohio, on the Ohio River and were very influential people there. They even had a court case go all the way to The Supreme Court. These are in my own line. Since your Augustus was born in Ohio, he may be part of my family, too. John's son, Moses, went down the Ohio a little farther south, where he had a family who were postmasters, educators, journalists, and one of them was James Madison Gates, who, in 1861, went up the Kanawha River as a reporter for the Cincinnati Enquirer, married my great-great grandmother and founded the Gates Paint Company in what is now Charleston, Kanawha County, WV, but was then Kanawha Court House, VA. The Gates genealogy is on file with Columbia University in Morningside Height in Manhattan, New York, New York. It is a very well-documented family because of their early immigration, right after the Mayflower, and the good record-keeping of the Church of England and the New England colonies, in general. Each of their spouses have pretty easy genealogies to follow, as well. I'd be happy to help any who are looking for the New England lines of the family. Sharon Lee Gates Apopka, FL
