James Gates, one of the early residents of Livingston County, died suddenly of heart failure while escorting his young grandchildren to the train at Cornell, Saturday. While passing the residence of Mrs. Murphy, west of the railroad tracks, he was suddenly stricken and before help could reach him he had passed away. He had been making preparations for some time to have a small cancer removed from his lower lip and it is thought by some that it is that which caused his death. By the coroner's inquest yesterday it is held that he died of heart failure. During the morning he had been driving with his relatives and appeared to be in the best of health. Mr. Gates was probably one of the earliest settlers of Livingstone County, he being 80 years of age, coming here in its infancy and watching its growth with much interest. He had been a resident of Cornell for the past 16 years and was highly respected by all who knew him. His funeral will be held at his residence in Cornell tomorrow afternoon. Rev. Alex Smith, of this city, will preach the funeral sermon. The following notice re: the funeral of James Gates was in another edition of the same newspaper: James Gates was buried from his residence at 2 p.m., Tuesday. Rev. Smith, of Pontiac, preached the funeral sermon. All his children were here except Mrs. Fred Shackelton, who was not able to attend.
