Elsie Pope was born in Leon, Carter County, Kentucky, the daughter of William Sherman Pope and Ida Mae Kitchen. Her brother was Roy Pope, sister Jessie Pope. After Sherman Pope's death in 1898, Ida married Marion Clevenger, and the family moved to Ashland. Elsie married Wade Gates. who was later a contractor in Ashland. Their children were: Roy born 1917, James born 1922, Robert born about 1925, and a much younger daughter whose name I think was Mary Frances. Mu mother was Elsie's half-sister, Frances Clevenger.
